The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor Mea culpa, mea culpa. This is one of the latest ones yet, and we apologize, but in keeping with our tradition, no excuses will be forthcoming. We say a temporary farewell to a fine man and member of JCGS, and an enthusiastic hello to our youngest genealogist, the new baby of Lonnie and Jennifer Daves. We encourage members as well to read the letter from Deanne Roles, our Society Computer Coordinator. Our lead article in this issue may seem a bit unusual to some, but we consider the Broughton Hospital records to be an important and overlooked source and one we should share. Share also with other JCGS genealogists Tim Barker, Bill Crawford, Ruth Shuler, Mack Sutton, Peggy Mason, Dan Johnson, and Lonnie Daves as they lend their work and talents to our publication. Have an excellent journey through its pages. y V i s i t u s a t o u r W e b s i t e : h t t p : / / w w w . m a i n . n c . u s / j c g s/ Journeys Through Jackson M a r c h - A p r i l 2002 T a b l e o f C o n t e n t s Tribute 35 JCGS Photo Album 36 - 38 Cemetery Records from Broughton Hospital 39 - 42 Jackson County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 43-46 Descendants of Abraham Enloe 47 - 50 1952 Jackson County Death Certificates 51 - 54 My Norman Brick Wall 55 - 57 JCGS Financial Statement for,2001 58 Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery....................................— 59 - 60 Cook Family Bible 61 JCGS Library Acquisitions.......................... 62 JCGS Items for Sale. .» 62 Picklesimer Descendancy of Lonnie Daves........................ 63 - 66 Index 67-68 ^ A Tribute to JCGS Member Charles Mason V Charles Mason was one of the quiet ones - those who don't talk until they have something to say that is worth saying; those who truly believe that actions speak louder than words. His broad smile and reserved, yet friendly demeanor were hallmarks of this person who had been a friend since high school days. His strength of character was evident not only in his frank, open expression, but also in bis willingness to lend a hand to those in need. During our school days Charles epitomized the term "scholar - athlete." He was active in sports and other school functions, but his grades came first, evidenced by the scholarship he won to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following college and marriage to his high school sweetheart, Peggy Queen, Charles served his country as an officer in the United States Navy and then worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority, rising to be superintendent of one of the largest nuclear power plants in that agency. He later worked for the Department of Energy, and even in retirement was called back to consult on various matters requiring expertise at the highest level. But in ordinary conversation one would never realize the many accomplishments of this important man: Charles was not one to boast - he just did what needed to be done. After some 34'year's of living in other states, Charles and Peggy returned to Dillsboro when he retired. After renovating her grandfather's home, they recently had built and moved into a new home just up the mountain. With Charles Mason's untimely passing on March 25, we all lost a friend, a special person to so many. To Peggy and their children and grandchildren, as well as to his brothers and sisters, we offer our deepest sympathy and prayers. Ruth Shuler 35 Journeys Through Jackson M a r c h - A p r i l 2002 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m Ky v_y Nope, we don't exactly ride the range or gather 'round a chuck wagon in Jackson County, and never did, but that's not to say that we haven't sent a few to other parts to do those thing.; Above, a photo of Walter Bryson in his days as a real cowboy. Bryson was a close relative of JCGS members Nelma Bryson, Gene McClure, and Bill Crawford, the latter of whom submits this photo from the collection of his grandmother Julia Bryson Crawford. We think you'll agree that this one is a classic. Ky 36 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2002 ^ J C G S P h o t o A l b u m ^ We find much of interest in the above photograph. First, notice that the background is natural, rather than an artificial dark cloth hanging or the like. Next, these persons did not pose in the typical style of the era, looking so grim that they could eat wire nails, or at least the planks on the house in the background. These happier folks are Micajah Merriman and Dulcena Upton Barker, and were great - grandparents of JCGS member Roy Shuler. Photo submitted by another relative, JCGS member Tim Barker. These Barkers were Alarka residents. ^ 37 Journeys Through Jackson M a r c h - A p r i l 2002 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m y The fabulous photograph above is turn-of-the-century vintage, and is also from the Julia Bryson Crawford pictures. It shows her brother Goldman Bryson and his family in a photograph obviously sent home from the West, where so many Jackson Countians moved. Goldman and JuUa Bryson were two of the children of Thad and Hannah Ensley Bryson. Picture submitted by JCGS member Bill Crawford. 38 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2002 ^ C A r e a P e r s o n s I n t e r r e d a t B r o u g h t o n H o s p i t a l C e m e t e r y [Ed. One genealogical resource that we suspect is sometimes overlooked is the cemetery at Broughton Hospital in Morganton. A state hospital for the mentally ill, its records were kept strictly, and they provide death dates prior to the time that North Carolina started requiring counties to keep records of vital statistics. Why are persons buried there rather than in home cemeteries? Several reasons come to mind. Some families simply did not have the resources to have the deceased transported back to the home counties. Some of the deceased undoubtedly had no families to whom the hospital could turn. We would hope that there were not many folks who died there abandoned by a family embarrassed by a stigma of mental illness, but to say that didn't happen would be naive. And we would hope that some families chose to bury their relatives at the hospital because it was a place of better health and happiness for their loved ones. Regardless of the reasons for the cemetery's existence, we are glad to add this material for persons to search. We have visited this cemetery before, and we are happy that all of the graves are now identified by marker. We secured this data from the Internet, and we acknowledge permission granted from Jack F. Hall, who had placed these public records there.] J a c k s o n C o u n ty Barnes, Martha; Row 17, Grave 13, born 1850, died 16 Apr 1915, admitted 20,Feb 1893 Buchanan, Dewey; Row 23, Grave 6, born 1900, died 1 Jan 1921, admitted 12 Jul 1916 Buchanan, Octavia; That, however, has not been the case with my Norman family. I have followed lead after lead, made visit upon visit, read official records one after another until my eyesight was only a blurry memory, and copied enough pages to send me to the poor house, all to conclude that I know exactly what I knew in 1977. Not much. If this were one of those cases where the searcher was going for a needle in a haystack, say looking for a man named Sam Johnson and his wife Mary Jones, then I might not feel as ignorant nor as frustrated. Likewise, if the object of my search were an obscure fourteenth-century Armenian, then I would feel much better about my faUures. But again, neither of those scenarios has been the case with this problem. What I need is a set of third great-grandparents, folks who might weU have-Uved in Yadkin or Surry County, North Carolina. Indeed, maybe someone from one of those counties wUl read this and know the answer to my problem. My mother's maiden name was Hazel Norman, born 12 July 1915 in Jackson County to James Edward Norman and his wife Hester Blanton. Blanton Branch folks, as most of the older people in the Scotts Creek township of Jackson County would know. "J<Edd" Norman, as he signed his name, was the third son of Preacher Abraham Norman and his wife Sarah Wilson. "Abe" Norman, as he was known throughout the county, was the youngest son of George and Louisa Hinshaw Norman. Ironically, the female sides of these families are relatively easy to research. The Blantons, the WUsons, and especially the Hinshaws have never presented the level of difficulty that the name Norman has. As always, you go with what you know. My mother knew that George and Louisa Norman moved here from Yadkin County, so it was a smaU matter to go to Hunter Library and search census records. The first Federal Census for Yadkin was in 1860, and sure enough, George .and Louisa are enumerated in its pages in the Forbush Township. Back it up ten years, and the same famUy is in Surry County in the 1850 records, since Yadkin was not yet formed. As I indicated earUer, Louisa's famUy is no problem. She descended from the Hinshaws, Carters, Clantons, Brays, names which have the luxury of many interested descendants. But to place George in a family has so far eluded me. The descendants of George Norman are the only Caucasian Norman family in Jackson Comity. One other famUy Uved in the Allen's Creek section of Haywood County, but I have never made any reasonable connection to those folks either. The surname, however, is very numerous in the Surry, and Yadkin area. That is part of the problem-. Another factor in the problem is the years of their Uves. According to a Bible record shared with me by the James Norman family (James was Abraham's brother), George was born 6 Jan 1820. Since census records did not give aU names until 1850, one needs to check the 1820 Surry-census for heads of household with a male under 5 years of age. No fewer than six famines qualify as potentiaUy correct, namely those of Isaac, Matthew, Nathaniel, and three WUUams. I have a reason to eliminate Isaac, Matthew, and one WUUam from this list I have a barely legible copy of George Norman's miUtary discharge 21 June 1862 "near Richmond." On this document, in the "born" blank, it reads Yadkin County. Nathaniel and Hie other two 55 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2002 WUUams lived south of the river in 1820, the other heads of household in what would stay Surry County. How strong is mis evidence? Again, not much, because the simple fact here is (and this .j is a huge factor in the problem) that George Norman was a poor, ihiterate fanner, who might well have answered Yadkin when he enlisted simply because that was where he Uved in 1861 when the war broke out. But this is nonetheless a fact worth filing away. FamUy tradition time. The family stories always had it that George Norman came home from the war with smallpox. My question at this point is if he came home to Yadkin County sick, and the famUy then moved to Jackson County. Or did Louisa and the chUdren move to Jackson County before then, and if so, why? The Bible I quoted earUer gives a death date for George of March 1863, but it would be 1866 before Louisa was in county court for her widow's dower. Another of the family stories says that the Norman family was quarantined, and that some of the neighbors kept them aUve by leaving food at a remote location, while other neighbors plotted how they could be removed from the premises permanently. At any rate, George died and became the first person buried in the Norman Cemetery at Ochre HiU. My mother made sure that George and Louisa received grave stones. Compounding the Problem...Three George Normans I suppose that I should be happy to say that I've found documentary evidence of three George Normans of the appropriate place and time. That number could just as easUy have been sixteen or twenty-seven. In one case, I tried to exhaust available data on a George, thinking I had solved my problem, only to have my hopes sink under the weight of contrary evidence. The first George, and the one I know the least about, is named in the 1828 Wilkes County \y~ will of his father James Norman, who bequeathed his son George one doUar. This George is probably the same one who married (7 Mar 1818) Rachel McBride in Wilkes County (Absher: Some Pioneers of Wilkes County, p.27). Therefore, he was at least one generation older than the George of my search. I will not, however, rule out the possibUity that my George was a nephew of this one. The second George led me on a wild goose chase. In the Surry County marriages, a Thomas Norman married a Pherebe PUcher 14 Jun 1809. Their son George was bom evidently about 1815, and Thomas died before March of 1819. In the Surry County court minutes for the May term of 1836, a Zachariah WiUiams petitioned for John, Daniel, and George Norman and Susanna Norman, "an infant under the age of twenty one years who petitions by her next friend George Norman." By doing a Uttle arithmetic, one can deduce that this George was already twenty-one years of age or more in 1836 and would have been born prior to March of 1815. This George appears to be the one who married Mary Cook and whose son Thomas (9 Oct 1836-15 Jan 1917, death certificate on file) is buried at Baltimore Church in the Forbush section of Yadkin County. According to one source in the Pilcher records, this George moved to South Carolina and died during the 1840's. For some time, I beUeved that this George was my ancestor, and I therefore possess many copies of wiUs, court transactions, and the like. Oops. Then I did the arithmetic. Not the right George. Trips to the Sources One of the real pleasures of working on genealogy is to be able to combine research with vacations, trips with family and friends, and the genealogist's natural curiosity to find something new. I made my first serious genealogy trip to Yadkin County in April of 1983. I had nosed around some in 1981, but did not have the time to work very seriously. Mom went along to offer 56 Ky Ky Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2002 moral support and to see where her folks came from. We did some courthouse work, some library work, and a Utile cemetery work, but the weather was cold. The highlight of our trip was in visiting in the home of an elderly couple named Norman in the East Bend area. They shared a Bible record of the EUis Norman (son of David C. Norman and his wife MiUicent PhUUps) family, but they too were unable to point me in the correct direction to find George. Through the years the-Hinshaw family came more into focus through talking with other genealogists, notably Joyce BrasweU and Thomas Hamm. I was eager to return to both YadkinvUle and Dobson to work more in official records. In April of 1989, both Mom and Dad went along with me, and we spent two days and a night looking for Normans and Hinshaws. I was able to take some pictures at the cemetery of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, where Louisa Hinshaw Norman's parents are buried in marked graves. We also visited the cemetery at Deep Creek Friends Meeting, where Isaac Carter (Louisa's maternal grandfather) is buried, as well as the cemetery art Courtney Baptist Church. The latter is important because Abraham Norman's sister Sarah, who did not move to Jackson County, is buried there with her husband WUUam Peoples. But nothing resulted in any more concrete knowledge of George Norman. On various occasions I have spent time in the North Carolina State Archives looking for information on this famUy, but so far nothing new has surfaced. I also use the various resources avaUable on the Internet, so far to no avaU. If Given Names Were Reliable If given names were a reUable indicator of a person's family identity, I could narrow this search a little more. George and Louisa named their oldest son WUUam with a middle initial of "P." The chances are good that his middle name was Pettis after her brother WUUam Pettis Hinshaw, but possibly the WiUiam means something more. The oldest daughter they named Sarah, a generic choice for sure, but possibly an indicator of his mother as weU. Other chUdren were named James Isaac, David S., Benjamin T., Ruth Almeda, Mary Ann, Rebecca E., and Myles Abraham. Two of them (Benjamin and Ruth Almeda) are obvious namesakes in Louisa's family. But there are Isaac Normans aU the way back to the late 1600's in Virginia, and the entire pursuit of this line of reasoning is not worth much without proper documentation. Where To From Here? To preserve sanity if nothing else, genealogists need to back away from brick waUs on occasion, looking for new perspectives, but I doubt that they completely surrender to the obstacle. There are stiU many, many sources to exhaust in Yadkin County. I've done no serious work with court records to speak of, and whUe I doubt that land records hold much promise (census records indicate that George owned no real estate), they are always possibUities too. Mount Pleasant Methodist Church might be a productive source, as well as the records of the other area churches. I also need to do some more work with Bastardy Bonds, since George could possibly be the iUegitimate son of a Norman mother. WUl this fanuly ever connect to the James of Wilkes County? If so, they wiU also connect to the Norman fanuly of Culpeper County, Virginia, a reasonably well-documented bunch. I won't give up. The genes forbid it. 57 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2002 F i n a n c i a l S t a t e m e n t f o r J a c k s o n C o u n t y G e n e a l o g i c a l S o c i e t y f o r 2 0 0 1 Receipts Contributions Member Dues Interest Gross Sales of books/publications Less cost of book items Net Sales Copier Income Total Receipts Expenses Rent/UtUities Printing, Publications, Postage Sales Tax, Insurance, Miscellaneous Expense Total Expenses Net Receipts (Loss) $288.90 $4,310.00 $300.94 $35,118.92 -$48,651.72* $13,532.80 $342.40 $8,290.56 $3,477.31 $5,477.24 $5,950.29 $14,874.84 $23,165.40 Ky Ky *Cost of Heritage Books Vol. I and II paid this year, while income received and accounted for last year Change in cash 1 J a n 2001 $40,259.52 Less Deficit $23,165.40 31 Dec 2001 $17,094.12 Submitted by David C.
