From the Editor This issue of JTJ would not have been possible without the expertise of JCGS member and former Computer Coordinator Kirk Stephens. Your editor made some blunders with the word processing, and Kirk, as he has so many times, came to the rescue. A big thanks to him. Kirk's generosity is typical of JCGS members. We hear, but only rarely, from the disgruntled and the unhappy. But far more often, we are blessed with the kinds of materials that make up such issues as this one. Members will find submissions from Vee Jones, Charles Miller, Cance Carnes, Carl Sutton, Tim Barker, and Gene Middleton, and that's just in the photo section. Add to that some diligent work on the part of Rick Frizzell, Ruth Shuler, Dennis Estes, Peggy Mason, Bill Crawford, and Mack Sutton, whose articles give us an enviable variety for your edification and enjoyment. We also include in this issue an informative article from Society President and Librarian Dorris Beck. As we begin the new year in JCGS, our membership statistics look very strong. Encourage a new member to join one of Jackson County's finest organizations. And may each of you discover genealogical gold in 2002. y y V i s i t u s a t o u r W e b s i t e : h t t p : / / w w w . m a i n . n c . u s / j c g s/ y Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2002 T a b l e o f C o n t e n t s Announcements 1 JCGS Photo Album 2 - 4 Granny Beck Aiken, The Witch of Caney Fork 5 - 8 Gribble Marriage Bonds in the NC State Archives 9 - 1 0 The John Gribble Estate Sale. . v 11 - 1 2 Jackson County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 13 - 1 6 The Journey of Dennis Estes 17 - 1 8 The Descendants of Abraham Enloe 19 - 22 1951 Jackson County Death Certificates 23 - 26 The JCGS Library 27 JCGS Library Acquisitions $ 28 Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery 29 - 32 Index » 3 3 - 34 Announcements The January meeting of JCGS was well-attended, and the audience was treated to an excellent program on Delayed Birth Certificates by Merrell Jenkins Riddle. Nothing is known about her childhood or youth. Although the census taker for Jackson County in 1880 declared that Rebecca was bom in NC, (NOTE: according to the 1900 census, she was born in May of 1831, and most probably in Transylvania County, NC) her parents were born in SC.1 Family tradition says that she was born a Hoxit (or Hogshead, both forms being used interchangeably at the beginning of the 19th century). Linda Raxter, historian of Jackson County, theorizes that Rebecca was born to a Cherokee mother and a white (or mixed) father. Jack Hoxit, likely Rebecca's brother, is thought to have been married to a Cherokee himself, with some interesting stories surrounding his involvement and suffering during the Indian removal of 1838.2 Rebecca's first documented appearance is in the 1850 census in Henderson County, NC. She is listed as "Rebecca Galloway" and is enumerated with Thomas Aikin and 2-year-old Lewis P. Aikin.3 Was Lewis the son of Thomas, or was he fathered by a Galloway? From family lore we have concluded at this point that Rebecca/Becky's first spouse was a Galloway, they having been married about 1846 - if they were married at all. Their one and only child was Lewis Perry. What became of Galloway? Did he die? Did he abandon his small family? Or was he possibly an already - married man who, after.a brief relationship with Rebecca, returned to his original family? So far we can do nothing but speculate. The 1860 census finds Rebecca in Henderson County, NC, Cherryfield Township, as the head of household and with the following children: Perry, 13; Sarah, 11; Arch, 9; Benj., 7; John, 5; and Hannah, 3.4 Thomas apparently had left and possibly had already begun another family.5 As we continue to track Rebecca, by 1870 she has established herself at Caney Fork Township in Jackson County, NC, where her legendary fame began to form. Her previous children are all present, with the exception of Hannah who has probably died: P. (Perry), 18; S. (Sarah) E., 16; Arch, 15; B. (Benjamin), 13; and John, 11. Interestingly, there are also two more children carrying the surname Aiken: Mary, 5, and Jackson, 3.6 Were these last two children fathered by Thomas Aiken or by someone else? Had they been formally divorced? Or had they even married? It is possible that Thomas came and went for a few years, and that these children were truly his. By 1880, Rebecca's older children have married arid moved on. John, though he was still single, had set out on his own and was preparing for an early fall wedding, getting his home ready for his bride (Nancy Coward) and her two daughters born out of wedlock. (Each had a different father, but neither was John's child.)7 Rebecca is still head of her household, and her only child at home is Jackson, 14, Mary having died by this time. John Hannah/Hameat, 65, is enumerated with her, and is Usted as a farm hand.8 Eight years go by and with all of her children gone, Rebecca is left alone with John Hannah/Hameat. She is approximately 57 years old, and he 77. During the fall term of court in 1888, the state of North Carolina brought charges against the couple of "fornication and adultery."9 It seems that the new morality of today isn't so new after Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2002 all! These charges were not uncommon, as several unmarried couples were accused of the same thing. It doesn't seem to be as scandalous as it sounds, since the only action taken was that having failed to appear in court, they were obligated to pay court costs.10 ~y Did this embarrassing incident provoke them to marry? In the 1900 census they are living as man and wife, declaring to have been married for some 15 years." However, to date not one marriage license nor divorce record has been located for Rebecca, not for her Galloway spouse, not for Thomas Aiken, nor for John Hannah/Hameat. Common law arrangements were often formed for convenience, and it is the opinion of this author that what started in her youth was continued throughout her lifetime as a habit. Between her poverty, her temperament, her ignorance, illiteracy and probable stubbornness, there were ample reasons to not have to fool with courthouses, judges, ministers, papers and the like. Where do these "witch" stories come in? The author can remember his great-grandmother, Flora Cook, one of Granny Beck's grandchildren, delightfully recalling with a twinkle in her eye, memories of Granny Beck: "She was little - tiny. She used to dance and twirl about and pat her head at the same time. She used to make us laugh." Her poverty forced her to beg food and milk from her neighbors at times, and probably because of her temper, such requests were not always met. Stories are told of her getting mad upon being refused, and calling down curses upon the offenders. Superstition and exaggeration painted her bigger than life, attributing to her the ability to curdle milk when she was within walking distance. One version even states that she could transform herself into a calf at will, jumping fences and quickly transforming back into herself. Another story tells of one poor soul who had cross words with her and found himself changed into a squirrel! The next day he found himself at home, a man once again, but covered with burrs and pine needles. It seems that there was one incident involving a man at Judaculla Rock,12 a strange local rock with some sort of Indian hieroglyphics written all over it. Granny Beck had lured this man to Judaculla Rock, had put some kind of spell on him, and was insisting that he turn his back on Christ and give his heart to Satan, as she went about her incantations. The version I heard is that he somehow broke away and freed himself from this devilish plot. You can imagine how this mysterious stone provided wonderful fodder for ghost stories, but combined with Granny Beck Aiken, many a child must have had their hair raised - and not a few adults as well! Pearl Cook, wife of respected Baptist revivalist preacher Ben Cook, insisted that as many times as they tried to trick Rebecca and "prove" her witchcraft, (by hiding a broom under a porch for example, when they knew she was going to cross it) she would always be privy to such a trick, and never fell for it. This strengthened the community's'convictions and suspicions about her, because how else could she have such foreknowledge and avoid a "sure" proof? l3 Her last census entry appears in 1910, where she is listed as a widow Uving with son John and family, but still retaining the Aiken surname. Were she and John ever married? M Granny Beck doesn't seem to have endeared herself to a lot of her contemporaries, which makes even more intriguing her brief obituary: y ^y Journeys Through Jackson Jan uary - February 2002 Beautiful were the floral tributes and many tokens of love and esteem which marked the peaceful passing away of Mrs. Rebecca Aiken, whose death occurred Wednesday AM 6:30. For many years Mrs. Aiken has been a devoted Christian worker. Her death was not unexpected, she having been a sufferer for many months. All her sons and daughters except one were with her during the last hours. Her loss is mourned by an unusually large number of friends and relatives. Her remains were laid to rest in Balsam Grove Cemetery, services were conducted by Rev. W.F. Cook. Did Granny Beck have a late-in-life conversion? Was she genuinely "mourned by an unusually large number of friends and relatives"? It is interesting the obituary writer's use of the word "unusually" - it causes the reader to surmise that the writer was surprised by such an outpouring. If this were the case, why then are the lingering legends about the fear she instilled in so many of her neighbors so abundant? Was her glowing obituary simply a reflection of the times, with the writer attributing to her almost saint-like qualities? Or was she the victim of a small-scale witch hunt? Was this obituary penned by a somewhat guilty communal conscience, recognizing in her death what they had refused her in Ufe, an appreciation of a sweet and humble soul who simply had some spark to her? It may never be known.. But even today, there are many who recall and tell the old stories of Granny Beck Aiken. One thing is certain: in all of her simplicity, Rebecca Aiken generated a lot of talk, and was one of the most colorful figures of her time in Caney Fork. Many of the old obituaries of the time referred to the "unusual number" of friends who paid their respects to the deceased by attendance at a funeral. We would interpret the expression more as a generic statement than as any attempt to comment on the motives of the congregation. We conclude the narrative of JCGS member Dennis Estes in this issue.] My next trip was in late November of 2000. This trip was especially nice as I got to meet many cousins. As a result of my research and the inadvertent publishing of a paper I wrote, I was able to make connection with three separate famUy groups. One of the highlights of my 2000 trip was spending the day with Larry Crawford traipsing through Jackson, Swain, and Macon counties, walking through cemetery after cemetery. Larry took me up Conley's Creek, through the Big Laurel and out through Leatherman Gap and down Blaze Creek onto Cowee Creek and out to Franklin. My 2nd great grandfather John Franklin Estes had property at the head of Blaze Creek. Many of his chUdren married into families from Greens Creek, Barkers Creek, etc. It was great to go to the top of Gowee and see the relationships to all of these drainages and see how relatively close these famiUes were. I got an awesome history/geography/genealogy lesson that day. On this day trip I was also able to find the grave of my 2nd great grandfather's first wife. Asbury married first Theodocia (Docia) Rickman. Together they had a daughter May. During the birth of a second child, both Docia and the baby died. I have looked for years to find more information on Docia Rickman Estes. While searching the new Swain County Cemetery Book, I found Docia Estes and child buried in DeHart Cemetery. She was buried close to other Rickmans and so now I need to search out these folks and see if I can find her parents. I was able to meet with family descended from John Wesley Estes. "Wes" was a brother of my great great grandfather Asbury Estes. Wanda Hill and her father, Harold Jenkins, met with me in Bryson City and reviewed what they knew of John Franklin and Laura Ashe Estes. John and Laura lived in "the same area as "Wes" and his family. Harold is a grandson to John and Laura and remembers where they lived and many stories of the family. On my next extended visit, I wUl go with Harold to look at the old home place in Cable Cove. I have expanded my search to include the siblings of Dolphus. I had the great opportunity to meet with descendants of Jesse Estes, brother to Dolphus. I spent the afternoon visiting and getting to know some of these folks and have since received additional information on some of these families. I wiU spend more time developing these lines in the coming months. My visit of November 2000 was very special. When my grandfather left Jackson County, left behind was the older half sister May. May stayed behind with her father and was raised by her grandparents John and Laura Estes. She is enumerated in their household in the 1910 census. She married a Riley Smith when she was just 13. Over time not much was heard from her, and I have looked for years in the hopes of finding her. An article written in the Fontana newsletter caught my eye. It was written by Rosa Lee Smith, May's daughter. I was able to spend some time with Rosa and we have exchanged family information. On the last day I spent a few hours in the Macon County Library. There I spent time going through microfiche of the Macon County Tax Records. I found a Usting for both Dolphus and WUliam Estes for 1866 in the Alarka District and again in the-1867 Ust. What I have not been able to do, and something I am greatly interested in finding, is when and from where Dolphus purchased this land in the first place. 17 Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2002 My next trip was in August of 2001. It was an extremely short trip, and I focused on the Ashe County area to continue looking for the parents of Thomas Estes. I was able to spend only iv one day in the Ashe/Wilkes area, but found enough clues that I now need to go back and spend a week or two in those counties. Now that the Dolphus Ervin Estes question has been answered, documented, and put to bed, the next big question (among lots of questions, but this is the next big one) is Who are Thomas Estes' parents? If Thomas' obituary is to be beUeved, and there is no reason to doubt it, his father is Jesse MuUen and his mother is Nancy Estis/Estes. This leads to the fact that his parents were ihegitimate. (ChUdren have no control over what their parents do, therefore the parents are the illegitimate ones.) Just before leaving for North Carolina, I was doing an Internet search and found Jesse MuUen/MulUn in both Ashe and Wilkes records. While in the area, I was able to document some information on this family. This Jesse MuUen is most likely the one I am looking for, but I have not yet confirmed it. If this is my Jesse, there are several records for him, and one is a will naming him the chUd of WiUiam and Sarah Triplett MuUen. His siblings are John and Mark MuUen. This WiUiam is most likely the brother to Flower MuUen and Mary Mullen. Their parents are not yet known, but there is a good chance that the father is a Patrick MuUin. This Patrick had a brother who was a minister and reportedly "just arrived from Ireland." At least if my 5* great grandfather is a Jesse MuUen I have found a likely prospect. Another factor is that a very common name in my family is WUliam. There does not seem to be any WUUam connection until we look at the Mullen family. If this Jesse were Thomas' father, then WiUiam would be a grandfather and perhaps had a hand in raising Thomas. I have even speculated that the name William may be a part of Thomas Estes' name. Finally, members of Jesse Estes' family have stated that Thomas' last name wasn't really Estes, and this seems to confirm the Mullen ^y connection. The other side is also enigmatic. I found a Nancy Estes in the Ashe/Wilkes area. After spending time looking at the records in that area, it appears that there are two Estes/Eastridge families there. Whether they are related remains to be seen. Nathan Eastridge seems to be a part of a family from Granville County, descendants of Ephraim/ Abraham Eastridge. Estes genealogists have already placed these two fellows to the Virginia immigrant named Abraham. If I could place Nancy in this family, I would hit a major Estes line and would be able to go back to 1400's England. Sadly, I don't think it wiU go this way. The other two names, John Estes and Richard Estridge, do not seem to be from the same family. Richard moves on to Tennessee as does Micajah Estes/Eastridge. As mentioned above, Micajah may be Thomas' brother. I think that Nancy and Richard are brother and sister and that John Estes is their father. The other family does not mention John, Richard, or Nancy. AU of these people are entrenched in Wilkes County in the early years, and my focus is on these three until I can prove or disprove the connection. There you have it! An awesome result from a smaU query placed on a mailing list led to a remarkable amount of information on my family. Without the resources of the Jackson County Genealogical Society and its members, I would not be as far along in the research as I am. It is because of the unselfish nature of many of the society members that I was able to follow my leads and develop new ones. As recently as my last trip, BUI Crawford snared a little piece of information of an "Aunt SaUy Eastridge" he has been trying to place. After putting our heads together, we find a missing Sarah Estes from the Thomas Estes famUy that could possibly fit. Now we have to work to prove it. This is just one example of how I have benefited by my membership in the Society. v> 18 Journeys T h r o u g h Jackson January - February 2002 T h e D e s c e n d a n t s o f A b r a h a m E n l o e [ Ed. If not, you may be pleasantly surprised by the materials available to help with your research. At the end of 2001, the book coUection consisted of 836 volumes. A card catalog provides an index to the entire coUection. A smaU number of these books are general histories; a few are books by local authors; but most of the books are valuable for genealogical research. The Barker CoUection includes books with information from several different states, including such things as wUl and deed abstracts, birth, marriage, and death records, and tax and church records. Many of the books in this coUection contain much more than is indicated by the titles, so the best approach is to browse through the shelves examining carefully any books that are of special interest to you. The general coUection (those not in the Barker Collection) includes books that are very similar to those in the Barker Collection. There are fanuly histories, census records, marriage records, and Heritage books from Burke, CaldweU, Haywood, IredeU, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Old Buncombe, Rowan, and Swain counties in North Carolina, as weU as Union, South Carolina and Lumpkin, Gilmer, and Rabun counties in Georgia. In addition to books, you wUl find helpful information in a variety of formats. The Society exchanges publications with nineteen other genealogical organizations and maintains files of these journals and of Journeys Through Jackson. The Society also is a member of the North Carolina Genealogical Society and has a file of its publication. On the shelves with these are copies of the Sylvan, a publication of the now-extinct-in-Sylva Mead Corporation, and copies of the minutes of the Tuckasegee Baptist Association. Some family histories are kept in folders and notebooks while other family information is filed alphabeticaUy in a file cabinet. This cabinet also contains an information file which includes materials dealing mainly with the history of Jackson County and some Jackson County census records which members have transcribed. A coUection of school and coUege yearbooks provides pictures and other information. A coUection of lineage charts has been started, and members are encouraged to submit their charts for inclusion in this notebook. Some coUections of obituaries which are indexed and easy to use can prove helpful in detennining parents, siblings, children, and other relevant facts. Society member Mack Sutton has provided a very helpful coUection of annotations for Old Savannah, Moody (Barkers Creek), Brown (Barkers Creek), and Locust Field Cemeteries. From death certificates Mack has Usted the parents of many of those who are buried in these cemeteries. A Ust of CD-ROM holdings appeared in the May-June 2001 issue of Journeys. It is my hope that this brief introduction to the Ubrary wiU encourage you to spend some time in our office examining and using aU of the materials avaUable to help you with your fanuly research. 27 Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2002 J C G S L i b r a r y A c q u i s i t i o ns Call No. Author Title Donor 929.2 929.3 929.3 929.3 929.3 929.3 929.3 929.3 975.6 975.6 929.3 929.3 929.3 929.2 929.3 929.3 975.6 975.6 929.2 975.6 301.451 976.8 973.04 MuU, B.
