From the Editor Far too often we begin this editorial column by admitting to some egregious mistake or some , inexcusable tardiness, but this one may top them aU. A typo last time resulted in aU of the pagination being 10 pages off the numbers that they should have been. We saw it - two months later - as we started to insert page numbers in this issue. Mea culpa, mea culpa. Regardless of the page numbers, we have an outstanding, if brief, lineup of reading for our members this time. The Absalom Davis papers shared by Ocie Stinnett and Sue Frady are extraordinary, and we hope to be able to revisit this source in the future. Enjoy the next segment of the detective work of Dennis Estes as he lays claim to Jackson County roots, and see some of the Middleton heritage of Lynda Ensley Webster in her John Middleton descendancy. As always, we share great old pictures of Jackson Countians as well. In keeping with our custom, we publish our membership list for 2001 in this issue. In this most important of holiday seasons, give thanks for the Gift of two miUenia ago, offer a prayer for our nation and its leaders, and spend aU of the time possible with those you love. To quote St. Francis, it is in giving that we receive. May aU of our JCGS members receive every blessing. Does anyone know her name? This lady would have been the grandmother of John Nelson Hunter. It is thought that Martha's mother was the oldest daughter of Jonathan Coward, Sr. and Martha Hutson. In the 1800 census of Pendleton District, SC, they had two females under 5. One was their daughter Nancy, who was bom in 1800 and was the mother of Jason Coward Chastain. We have never been able to find out the given name of the oldest girl. If you can help, send a response to Trudy at the address above, or e-mail trudvhadams(Staol.com with your answer. In Sympathy Several members of the Society have recendy been affected by the loss of loved ones. We offer our sincere sympathy to Helen Wood, Michael and Angela Wood, Betty Foxx, and Denise Haney. Words do not easily convey these kinds of thoughts, but we wish you the very best as you consider the many memories that you hold near to your hearts. Correction JCGS member Gary PhiUips sends along an addition to his PhiUips fanuly pubUshed in the last issue. He had inadvertently omitted Beulah Ethel Crawford from the family of Rebecca Emiline PhiUips and John Lee Crawford. This article is a perfect example of one thing in genealogy leading to another, and another, and so on until it reaches its logical conclusion in these pages. JCGS member Ocie Stinnett called one evening, saying that Mack Sutton had "scooped" her on a picture that he had shared in JTJ, and would we be interested in publishing photographs of other members of the particular family? After agreeing that it was an excellent idea, Ocie then mentioned that she would be visiting a cousin in Jackson County, whereupon we agreed to pick up the pictures there and take a look at the other materials in the cousin's possession. The cousin turned out to be Mrs. Sue Frady of the Little Savannah Community, who graciously shared this collection of loose papers that belonged to her mother and back through the generations to Absalom J. Davis. This kind of material is a windfall for an editor, who is chomping at the bit to see even more of the papers and photographs. Second, she was the wife of Peter Dills, and we published a descendancy of this couple in one of our 2000 issues. Third, she was one of the daughters of David and Mary Morrow Parris. Fourth, she is the ancestress of several JCGS members, including Ocie Stinnett, Brian McMahan, and Cance Carnes. Fifth, she is an aunt (with several "greats" added) to numerous JCGS members. We continue in this issue with the narrative of JCGS member Dennis Estes.] Let's look at the clues for the placement of John Franklin Estes in the Dolphus and Jane Estes family. 1. John Franklin Estes' death certificate Usts Ervin as his father. Dolphus Ervin Estes is the only Ervin in the area, including surrounding counties. 2. Olene Estes Lantis, a granddaughter of John Franklin Estes, remembers asking her grandfather who his father was, and he replied "Ervin, and his Daddy "was Tom." Dolphus Ervin is the son of Thomas Estes. Another clue that fits. 3. John Franklin Estes names his first-bom son WUUam Dolphus Estes. 4. S. Estes (Sallie) Sarah A. Estes marries a George W. Green. Olene knew that SalUe Green was her grandfather's sister. George and SaUie Green and John and Laura Estes lived close together in the Greens Creek area of Jackson County and later in Swain County. Land records show that they bought and sold property from and to each other. George and Sallie Estes Green's eldest son. WUUam Thomas Green, marries John and Laura Estes' daughter Mary Magdalene (Maggie) Estes. There is no doubt that Sallie and John were brother and sister. Several members of John Franklin Estes' fanuly that are still Uving aU said the same thing when describing this family. SaUie names one of her children Dolphus, and one of them Ervin. 5. The Estes family from Deep Creek, Swain County, are descendants of WiUiam M. Estes. This WUUam is a brother to Dolphus. Olene remembers her father, Fred Estes, taking her and two of her sisters to stay there when they had to have their tonsils out. Buel Anthony, a great grandson of John Franklin Estes by way of Minnie Estes Green, remembers being told that the Estes family of Deep Creek were their cousins. 6. Jesse E. Estes, the younger brother to Dolphus, has a daughter named Samantha. Samantha Estes marries Christopher C. Brooks. The first-bom of that union is Lula Brooks. Lula marries John Franklin Estes' son John Wesley. Children from this marriage remember their grandmother and aunts on their mother's side tell of John Franklin coming to Uve with them when he was just a boy. They said something bad had happened in his family. 7. The TVA removal records for Hyde Cemetery in Swain County show Ervin Estes and John Franklin Estes to be buried in the same area. Approval for moving Ervin comes from Fred Estes, Usted as grandson. Fred is John Franklin Estes' youngest son. Fred also gives approval for the moving of his father and mother. Olene Lantis Estes remembers walking through the Hyde Cemetery with her grandfather and his pointing out graves of family members. She remembers his pointing out his father's grave and the grave of a sister. Now, how to explain the mysterious "T" in the 1860 census. A look at the naming patterns in this family gives a logical explanation. The most numerous name passed down in this family is William. I am not able to prove it yet, but I believe that Thomas was probably WUUam Thomas Estes. WiUiam shows I the next generation as WUliam M. Estes, younger brother of Dolphus Ervin Estes. In the next generation, Dolphus names his eldest son WUUam L.F. Estes. Nancy names her first son WUUam. Dorcas names eldest son WUUam T. (for Thomas) and her next son 179 Journeys Through Jackson November — December 2001 Dolphus Ervin, aqnd Jesse E. names his eldest son WiUiam Wesley. All of Thomas' children name a child WiUiam. I noticed as I researched the material from this area that many times v__y the middle name was used as a given name. In the next generation, the name continues, with SaUie Estes Green naming her eldest son WUUam Thomas Green, and John Franklin Estes naming his son WiUiam Dolphus. This name continues in the other families as well. Another unusual thing occurs in this family. We first notice it with Dolphus' eldest son, named WiUiam L.F. Note the three names before the last name. In the 1860 census he shows just as "L." John Franklin Estes names at least his first three chUdren with multiple names. WUliam Dolphus is WUUam Dolphus Alkeney Mermun Estes, Callie was LUlie Caledonia Sarah Jane Estes, and Asbury was James Jacob Asbury Astin Estes. With multiple names being somewhat common in this family, and with Thomas being the name used by the living patriarch of this family, it would not be out of line to expect that John Franklin Estes would have an additional name as well. I believe that he was Thomas John Franklin Estes, or some arrangement thereof. Hence the initial "T" in the 1860 census. Everything else fits for John Franklin to be the second child bom to Dolphus and Jane Estes. John Franklin even names his eldest daughter Jane. It is a mystery what happens to the Dolphus and Jane Estes family in the 1860's. It appears that Jane is Ul, because the family is living with her brother in the summer of 1860. In 1866, Dolphus appears to marry again, this time to Amanda PanneU. In the 1870 census, only two of the children are apparent at first glance. Jesse was Uving with Elijah Stiles, and Margaret was living with John CogdUl. WUliam L.F. marries for the first time in 1869, so he would be listed as head of household. That leaves John Franklin, Sarah W., and Rebecca. KJ We know from family history passed down orally that John Franklin Estes Uved with his uncle Jesse in the late 1860's. A closer look at Jesse's family in 1870 might show John as an 18-year old. It is possible that he is on his own by 1870. He marries 3 years later. I believe that a closer look at related families may show the whereabouts of Sarah, Rebecca, and W. as well. It boUs down to that this is the only family that fits what information we have on John Franklin Estes, meaning that his parents would have to be Dolphus Ervin and Jane Stiles Estes. (I was stiU looking to prove it.) My third trip to Western North Carolina was taken in the summer of 1998. During this trip I expanded my search area. I used this trip to estabUsh more relationships with folks I was meeting in the Western North Carolina area. I also expanded my search into Buncombe and Haywood Counties. I was able to confirm some information and found one new item of information to work on. While searching through some 1870 census records, I found what appear to be the "lost" children of Dolphus and Jane. I am stUl working to confirm this information. If these are indeed Dolphus' chUdren, then this finding would seem to strengthen the idea that something happened first to Jane, since Dolphus had remarried in April of 1866, and then to Dolphus himself. Family oral history indicates that "something bad" happened to the parents of this family. Perhaps continued research wUl lead us to discover what happened. During this trip I spent some time in the Buncombe County Court House and at the Old Buncombe Genealogical Society Library. While searching through the old records, I discovered an entry in the 1820 Haywood County census for a Micajah Estridge. Estridge, Ky Estes, Eastes, and Estis are aU speUing that have been used to describe our family. In one 180 u Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2001 legal document from Swain County, WiUiam Estes has his name spelled Estridge and Estes on the same document. It was exciting to be able to place another potential Estes in the local vicinity. As I continued to research I made an even greater discovery. Micajah Estridge sold property in 1820, land that appears to be on upper Scotts Creek. Thomas Eastes/Estes moves to that same area in 1820. Coincidence? Maybe, but I don't think so. I also found a Usting in the legal proceedings for the 1790's in Wilkes County for a Micajah Estridge son of one Nancy Estridge. (Remember my Thomas' mother was Nancy Estis.) Micajah is listed as an orphan and is bound to Col. Joseph Hemdon 6 Nov 1794. Again, coincidence'maybe, but I don't think so. There are also the names Nathari, Richard and John Estridge* mentioned. (Interestingly, John appears with the last name speUed Eastes and Estes.). Also noteworthy is that John is deemed exempt from paying the PoU Tax on account of age and irifirmities 29 July 1794. I have not conclusively identified these three (John, Nathan, and Richard), but I have good leads. If my leads pan out, Nancy wiU probably show to be a sister or possibly an aunt. One more puzzle to solve. I am not able to prove this yet, but I am developing strong leads that Micajah and Thomas are brothers. There are too many factors seeming to fit together not to continue at leat looking at that possibility. Time wiU tell if this is a dead end. Finding Micajah Estridge in this area, I went back to the John H. Estes enumerated in the 1850 census. He is the son of John Bacon Estes, who is the son of Bartlett and Susannah Estes. Bartlett and Susannah are first cousins.' Bartlett descends from the Estes immigrant to i ^ America, Abraham, through the latter's son Robert Estes Sr. So John H. Estes is accounted ^ ^ for and is not a part of the Thomas Estes line. There is a very good chance -that Nancy, Thomas and Micajah are descended from another of Abraham's sons, Richard or John. Either way, Thomas and John H. would be cousins. The Richard Estes mentioned in the Wilkes County information above is not the Richard, son of Abraham. Wilkes County Richard moves to Tennessee in the early 1800's as does Micajah. Another clue for the relationship between Thomas, Micajah and John H. is that Micajah is enumerated in the 1820 census next to the Patton family. John H. Estes later marries a Patton-from Haywood County. As one can see, this trip caused more questions than it answered. But it was very exciting to find that there were at least possibUities to work with. After so many years of dead ends, it is nice to have some information to prove or disprove. I need to schedule a nip to the Ashe/Wilkes area to try to sort some of this out The highlight of this, trip was meeting and visiting with Jim Estes of Whittier. Jim is descended from WUUam Estes, second son of Thomas: Jim had recently taken possession of the old Estes/Clark cabin on Deep Creek. This cabin had been buUt by WUUam Estes and has been in Jim's fanuly for most of the time since. Behind this cabin and up on the hill is the Estes Cemetery where WUUam and much of his fanuly are Buried. WhUe preparing to remodel this cabin, Jim found some old papers in the attic space. Most people would have thrown these old papers away, but Jim recognized their value and donated them to Western Carolina University. I had the opportunity to spend two hours at the Ubrary at WCU and go through these i . papers. I found many interesting documents, but I had to get to Atlanta that afternoon for my flight home, so I was not able to spend the time necessary to go through the papers in detail. I wiU need to make another trip and spend the day at the Ubrary. There were three gems that 181 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2001 jumped out at me: a letter to WiUiam from a Crawford cousin (later published in JTJ) , a letter from Thomas to his son WiUiam, and WiUiam's commission in the North Carolina ^y militia. The second item, dated December 23, 1883, shows that Thomas and his son have had some kind of disagreement. Here is the text of that letter: December the 23 - 1883 Mr. WUliam Estes, Sir I will say to you that I am in common health I hope this will find you all well I will inform you that I am going to move away as I cant have any satisfaction with my children when I come to see you You mostly treat me with contempt in your conversation So that I cannot have any pleasure with you I hope that god wUl pardon you for it as to the rest of your famUy they treated me weU I do not expect to ever see you anymore til we meet in another world So farewell Thomas Estes The third gem was WUUam Estes' commission as a 1st Lieutenant in the North Carolina militia, dated April 20,1862. There is mention in the Special Collections Accession Form of a will, but I was not able to find or read it in the short time I had at the Library. This research trip was very exciting. Several doors were opened and a lot of information was obtained that must be verified and put into its proper place. Several more trips need to be planned to develop these leads. In November of 1999 I again returned to Western North Carolina. It was during this trip that I had perhaps my most profound experience on this Odyssey. My oldest son, Darwin, had married a girl from Flat Rock and had moved to AsheviUe. My first grandchild was bom .y in AshevUle, and I traveled there to see her and participate in her blessing the first Sunday in November. Because of family activities, my research time was very short. I went to the OBCGS Library, thinking I could verify some of the information I had found on the last trip. I spent a few hours in the library and decided it was time to leave. As I walked past a shelf, I got a feeling to stop and look on the top shelf. On the far left side of the shelf was a very thin folder. I was prompted to pull this file down and look at it. The title on the folder was Loose Estate Papers at the State Archives. I opened the file and right in front of me was listed the Estate of D.E. Estes o f Macon County. Could it be that after aU this searching, including a trip to the state archives on my second visit to North Carolina, that here was the answer to the question whether John Franklin Estes were the son of Dolphus Ervin Estes. I sat holding tiie file in a state of shock for several minutes. I was excited to find the file and knew the importance of what it contained. FinaUy I would have an answer. I met with Larry Crawford the next night and reviewed with him what I had found. He indicated that Rick Frizzell was going to the State Archives the following week, and that he would ask Rick to copy me estate papers. Rick agreed and in late November I was holding the papers in my hand. Once again Rick had played a major role in helping me discover my people from North Carolina, and I wUl be forever indebted to the man who graciously has helped me when he did not even know me. Because he was willing to go the extra mile, on more than one occasion I have been able to estabUsh links to my fanuly. From the Estate Papers the foUowing information was established: Dolphus died in December 1866 V^ 182 Ky KJ Journeys Through Jackson November -^December 2001 In a petition filed in the July term 1867 Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, the foUowing chUdren are Usted: WiUiam L., Margaret A., John F., Sarah A., Jesse, Mary Jane and Julia. Dolphus' land was located at the mouth of the Tuckasigee River bounded by the land of WUUam Crawford, his cousin. He had about 100 acres of land. There is a legal dispute over the land, and in 1867 Amanda, the widow, is given one third, or 33 acres of this land. A jury had been convened in the summer of 1867 for the purpose of deciding this dispute. The final resolution of this action appears to be over in the Fall Term of 1868. These papers are very hard for me to read, so I may yet find additional detail. Interestingly, Amanda seUs these 33 acres in December of 1867. So what did I find as a result of these papers? 1. Dolphus' death date (December 1866) and apparent location where he was living at the time of his death. This confirms that he did not go to IredeU County, and he did not marry Sarah Brazil, as has been suggested by another researcher. 2. He married Amanda Pannell in April of 1866, he died in December of 1866. Amanda is carrying his youngest child. 3. Confirmed his chUdren WiUiam, Margaret, John, Sarah, Jesse, Mary Jane, and Julia. Until now I was unaware of the chUd JuUa. Missing are Rebecca and "W." UntU now it was beUeVed that Mary Jane was a daughter of Dolphus and Jane, and now we have proof. 4. The location of where Dolphus was living. I don't know when BushneU came into being, but Dolphus' property would have had to be just across the river from where BushneU was or would be. Hence it was also near the old Hyde Cemetery, confuming the TVA removal records that "Ervin" was buried in the old Hyde Cemetery and later removed to Lauada. 5. Most exciting of all to me is that I how have proof that John Franklin Estes is in fact the son of Dolphus Estes and Jane Stiles. I looked from 1973 until November of 1999 to find this information. As an old detective who has to do more than just believe that something is right, I have to prove it is right. I got great personal satisfaction in finding all of this information and having it fit. Now what questions were raised as a result of these papers? 1. What became of Amanda and Julia? 2. Where are Rebecca and W.? When these estate papers were written, W would have been 9, Rebecca 8. Were they placed wUh other family members when their mother Jane Stiles Estes died? There is also the possibUity tiiat they have passed on, and that may be true for W, but Rebecca later marries John Lewis. 3. When did Dolphus purchase the land disputed in the Estate Papers? 4. What became of WUUam L.? There was mention in the Jim Estes papers of a WUUam being murdered - was this our WUUam? What became of Jesse and Mary Jane? They aU marry over the next 10 years or so, but where are tiieir families? 5. What became of Jane Stiles, first wife of Dolphus? Where is she buried? 6. Are there guardian records in Macon County for any of Dolphus' chUdren? 183 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2001 Once again, questions answered and questions raised. Kj When I got home from this trip, I updated my files on the Dolphus family. Before I lay that out, I took another look at the decade of the 1860's for this family. 1860 begins with Dolphus and Jane Uving with her brother Elijah Stiles, as evidenced by the 1860 census. Children are enumerated as foUows: L son age 10 T son age 8 M daughter age 7 S daughter age 5 W son age 4 R daughter age 3 J son age 1 We now know from the Estate Papers that the chUdren are as follows, with the exception of Rebecca and W: WUUam Lafayette F. b. abt 1849 M. (1) Mary Katherine Martin (2) Mary Pannell John Franklin Margaret Sarah A (Sallie) W. (son) Rebecca Jesse E. (3) Malinda Inman b. 31 Aug 1852 M. Laura Haseltine Ash b. abt1854 b. abt1857 b.abt1858 b.abt1859 b. abt1860 M. George W. Green M. John Lewis M. Mary H. WUson Ky Mary Jane is bom in 1862 and she later marries James Lemmon - proof of her place in the family confirmed by die estate papers. The next recorded information I can find is when D.E. Estes marries Amanda Pannell. It is apparent that some time between the birth of Mary Jane in 1862 and April of 1866, when Dolphus dies, something had also happened to Jane. In the next census, 1870, this family does not exist. Members show up in various families. I am working to verify and confirm where each of these chUdren Uved in 1870, together with where Amanda and daughter Julia are. [Ed.
