From the Editor Certainly we can add nothing to the millions of words already said and written about the tragedy of September 11. We can, however, do a small part by staying steady with the things we do, thereby refusing to allow Evil the upper hand. And we can celebrate our unity regardless of our genealogical backgrounds, or skin color, or religious CHOICE (a concept incomprehensible to ignorant fanatics), or any of a thousand other aspects of life that make our country great. We have the freedom to reflect civilized behavior in associating ourselves voluntarily in such organizations as this one. With that freedom always in mind, enjoy the work of JCGS members Dennis Estes, Lynda Ensley Webster, and Gary Phillips. Dennis begins a narrative of his genealogical search in North Carolina; Lynda shares a cautionary story guaranteed to touch the sensibilities of any genealogist; and Gary gives us pure "tree - climbing" genealogy on the Daniel Phillips family. Enjoy also some more fine old pictures from Jackson County's past, some Ahnentafel lists of members, and the Lonnie Daves descendancy through the McCalls. So far we are having a beautiful fall in the mountains. May all of our members find beauty, whatever you perceive it to be, and may you find profound satisfaction in being a patriotic American. y V i s i t u s a t o u r W e b s i t e : h t t p : / / w w w . m a i n . n c . u s / j c g s/ y Journeys Through Jackson September *- October 2001 T a b l e o f C o n t e n t s Expression of Sympathy, Clarification, Query 127 JCGS Photo Album 128 - 1 3 0 The Journey of Dennis Estes.............—...— 131 - 1 3 6 Buried in the Hills 137 - 1 4 0 1950 Jackson County Death Certificates 141 - 1 4 3 Some Coward Family Records 144 Items for Sale by JCGS 144 The Daniel and Isabella Phillips Family., » 145 - 1 4 8 The Descendants of Samuel McCall 149 - 1 5 4 Ahnentafel Records of JCGS Members ............ ........ ...155 - 1 5 8 Index 159-160 We in the Jackson County Genealogical Society offer our sincere sympathy to JCGS member George Harry Ensley, Jr., on the loss of his mother, Mrs. Helen Ware Ensley. The following account by JCGS member Dennis Estes will be self-explanatory.] In November of 2000, •while I was on a research trip to Jackson County, North Carolina, Larry Crawford asked me to write a narrative of my search and research of my family. Prior to 1996, not much was known about my family roots in Western North Carolina. This article is not an in-depth report of my research, but is rather an overview of what I have found, and more importantly, the areas that I still need to spend time researching. Therefore, I have not included much of the supporting documentation that would be required of a good genealogist This narrative is meant to tell my story of beginning with almost nothing in terms of information on my family, and now, some five years latter, having quite a wealth of information. In the process I .have found untold numbers of cousins and developed some very special friendships. What's more, I have established a link with my heritage and assisted others to know more of who their family is and was. As a result of this search and the information gathered, I am in the process of writing a book on the history and genealogy of my'family. In 1973, while stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, I began to research my ESTES family roots. At that time, I did not know much about our family. What I did know was that we were- from Western North Carolina, and that we descended from John Franklin Estes, but that was about all I knew. From that first tentative search came a 27-year quest to find my roots. For most of that time, the quest has been fruitless. I have not been alone. My grandmother, Wanda V. Bennett Estes, and "my father, Arthur J. Estes, have been searching much longer than I. Until 1996, not much had come to light about our family. We had some dusty' stories, as told by Dona Gunter Estes, second wife of Asbury Estes, to their son James Estes. As often happens in the telling and retelling, some of these stories began to take lives of their own. My grandfather, James Adam Homer Estes, was bom 29 Aug 1908, on Barkers Creek, Jackson County, North Carolina. In 1911, as a three-year-old, he moved to Idaho, never again to see the mountains of his birth. Our family grew up ignorant of the family in North Carolina. Having been isolated from the North Carolina Estes families and related cousins, we were left to imagine what our family was like. I became seriously ill in 1993 and spent the next three and a half years recuperating. Toward the latter stages of my recovery, I began to have a burning desire to find my ancestry. My grandfather, James Adam Homer Estes; had been hospitalized with Alzheimer's disease during this time. It had always been his dream to go back to North Carolina to find his roots. Sadly, when he was finally retired and in a position to go to North-Carolina, circumstances in his life were such that he was unable to go. I took it upon myself to do what he could not, to fulfill his dream of going to North Carolina and finding our roots'. In early January of 1996, I subscribed to a genealogy mailing list on the Internet. I posted a request for information o'the ESTES family of Jackson County, North Carolina. A kind soul in Sylva, North Carolina (I later found that it was none other than Rick Frizzell) copied my request and took it to Larry Crawford. Late one night in February 1996 I received a phone call that proved to be an answer to a prayer. Larry gave me a brief sketch of our family and then mailed some additional information'to me. We knew from Dona Gunter Estes, mother of James A.H. Estes, that his father was Asbury Estes and that Asbury's father was John Franklin Estes. 131 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 For many years this was all of the information that we had with respect to our family Over the years, my father, Arthur J. Estes, had found the death certificate of John Franklin Estes. On the K^y" death certificate was listed the father of John as Ervin Estes. Dad's research had found Dolphus Ervin Estes, and Larry seemed to confirm what Dad had found. Lany also told me where my great-grandfather, Asbury Estes, and his father, John Franklin Estes, were buried. Dad had talked of going to North Carolina for years, so in October of 1996, we traveled to Jackson County, North Carolina, and reestablished contact with our past The research of our - family has been very interesting. I have made five research trips to visit Western North Carolina. This narrative chronicles my trips and the discoveries I have made. Many people have contributed to this work, and many more are in the process of contributing. One of the biggest challenges has been in placing John Franklin Estes in a family. In other words, who were bis parents? Years of research have gone into answering this question. Working this out became somewhat like preparing for a court case when I was a detective with the police department Knowing or believing something did not make it true; there had to be some kind of evidence to tie it all together. This caused great consternation for my father. It all appeared very real to him, and with all the effort he had exerted, he was ready to accept what he had and move on. I, on the other hand, needed to put some more pieces together. In the end, my conclusion was the same as his. Perhaps I should have just accepted the apparent match and worked in other areas. One of the benefits of the continued research has been additional facts supporting the supposition; thus additional information about this family. In February of 1996, when I received the phone call from Larry, our family was still pretty much an enigma. We had information that John Franklin Estes' father was Ervin, and we knew that a Dolphus Ervin Estes lived in the area at the right time to be John Franklin's father. Ky We could not, however, document this father - son relationship. In fact, there were two obstacles to overcome in placing John Franklin Estes as the son of Dolphus Ervin Estes: 1. The biggest problem in placing John Franklin with the Dolphus and Jane Stiles Estes family is that a "T," in the very suspect 1860 census, occupies his place. 2. Another Estes researcher has Dolphus Ervin Estes moving to Iredell County in 1858 and marrying a Sara Brazil. This researcher has Dolphus having several children with Sara Brazil and then dying about 1898 with burial in Iredell County. These two obstacles would need to be proved or disproved before I could document and confirm Dolphus Ervin Estes as the father of John Franklin Estes. In October of 19961 made my first trip to Jackson County. Accompanied by my father, we began our investigation in Robbinsville, Graham County. We knew from John Franklin Estes' death certificate that he died in Stecoah and was taken by his son John Wesley into Robbinsville. Dad picked up the phone book, which listed a few Estes families. He placed a call to Lenore C. Estes. In visiting with her, we found that she was a grand daughter-in-law to John Franklin Estes. We had found the first of our Estes kin in western North Carolina. Lenore did not know much about the family past John Franklin, but she was able to share some information about the families she did know. We found that Lenore was married to James Estes, son of John Wesley Estes, who was the son of John Franklin Estes. We spent the rest of this first day in the Graham County Courthouse and library. We began to document bits and pieces of our family. The following day introduced us to the tourist season patterns of Western North Carolina. It was Saturday, and we had to run up to Knoxville. We discussed getting reservations for a hotel 132 y Ky Ky Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 room before we left Jackson County. I looked at all the .motels in the Sylva/Cherokee area and said, "Look at all these rooms available. It is the middle of October. School is in session, tourist season is over, there will be all kinds of rooms available." We went on up to Knoxville, returning about 10:30 pjn., when we began to look for a motel room. Everything was full. At the Comfort Inn in Sylva the clerk was so bold as to laugh at me when I asked for "a room. Frustrated and tired by this time, I asked what was so funny. It was then that I found out about the leaves. Not a motel room was available between Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Asheville. We spent the night trying to sleep in our rental car. The rest of our trip found us. walking through cemeteries and courthouses, building a data base of information to document our family history. We visited cemeteries -in Cable Cove, Lauada, Bryson City, Deep Creek, Whittier, and Sylva. We visited Old Savannah, Gunter, and many other cemeteries. We were in Graham, Swain, Macon, Jackson, and Haywood County Courthouses, gathering documents. We met with Buel Anthony, Troy Proctor, Joyce Welch, and Larry Crawford. Buel Anthony and Troy Proctor were able to give us additional information on the John Franklin Estes family, particularly the children of this family. Joyce Welch also added to the information, particularly of my great great grandfather Asbury Estes. It seems that Asbury had lived with Joyce's grandmother shortly before he died. Joyce also showed us a picture of John Franklin Estes and all of his children with the exception of Callie. We also had a visit with Larry Crawford. He had information and family listed back two more generations. After meeting with him, I had a better idea of where I needed to spend my time to document this family. I picked up copies of the Jackson, Swain, Macon, and Graham Heritage books and went home armed with pages of information to begin confirmation and documentation of this family. Let's pause for a moment in this narrative and look at some of these families. I will begin with the earliest known Estes in the Haywood/Jackson area and work down. The earliest known ESTES ancestor found in Western North Carolina is Thomas Estes. He is the patriarch of the Estes family in this area. Based on available information, it appears that all the Estes families in Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Graham counties are descendants of this man. The exception is John H. Estes enumerated in the 1850 census. We hope that further research will show a connection between John H. Estes and Thomas Estes. The following obituary is copied verbatim from the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church book: Memory of Thomas Estes Son of Jessee Mullen and Nancy Estis was bom in Ashe County now Wilkes April 11 1806 at the age 20 he moved to Buncombe County and married margarett Crawford and they lived together untill they were boath getting old and his wife died he again married to Sarah Wilks he made a profession of Religion and Joined the mount Pleasant baptist Church October 14* 1871 and was baptized by Elder Wm. R. Crawford he was never very attentive to church meeting neither before he attached himself to the church nor afterwards He was afflicted for sometime before his death on being asked about his future prospects of heaven he remarked that at times he felt all right - other times he felt Doubtful He told his daughters Nancy and Dorcas that he thought he would go to rest and wanted to die and be out of his misery 133 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 He died January 3rd 1889 being 82 years 8 months 23 days old Written by A.J. Hall and J.L. Snider Larry Crawford, who copied the obituary, writes: "Note the absence of punctuation. Also, the geography is suspect Ashe County was formed from Wilkes, not the other way around. I would doubt that Thomas lived in Buncombe County. Haywood is far more likely, and the church committee seemed to be unaware that Haywood County was formed from Buncombe. They did know that the area was once Buncombe, but they had forgotten the date of Haywood's formation. What is reliable here? The names of parents and daughters, and the general area of the birthplace, as well as all dates." The following is what I have been able to put together for Thomas Estes. He was bom 11 April 1806 probably in Ashe but possibly in Wilkes Comity, North Carolina. When he was twenty, he moved to Haywood County and married Margaret Crawford 25 May 1823. Margaret Crawford was one of the daughters of Samuel Crawford and Mary Briscoe. I would suspect that Thomas was either younger than 20 when he moved to Haywood County, or he was bom earlier than 1806. If he were bom in 1806 and married Margaret in 1823, he would have been 17 years old when he married. Land deeds show that he purchased land from the State of North Carolina in 1841. The land was $5 per 100 acres, and he bought 50 acres in what appears to be the Scotts Creek area. His land was bordered on one side by the land of William Stiles and on the other side by Samuel Crawford, bis father-in-law. More research is needed to identify the specific location of his land. Not much is known about his early years. His children are being bom by 1826, and the last one is bom in 1846. We do not know when Margaret died, but Thomas remarried 12 April 1880 to Sarah Wilkes. Our next reference is a letter written by Thomas Estes to bis son William. The letter was written in 1883, some six years before Thomas' death. There appears to have been a falling out or disagreement between Thomas and William. I was sent a copy of the letter from Jim Estes, a descendant of William. The letter is difficult to read, and when I am able to complete the rewriting of the letter, I will include it here. It appears from bis obituary that Thomas was ill for a while before he died. The last account we have of him is his obituary, which lists the death as January 3,1889. • According to his obituary, Thomas Estes came to Buncombe/Haywood County when he was 20 years old. This same obituary states that he was bom April 11, 1806 to Jesse Mullen and Nancy Estes. He married Margaret Crawford and the following were issue to this union: Dolphus Ervin Estes William M. Estes Frances Elmina Estes Nancy C. Estes Son Dorcas Estes Jesse E. Estes Sarah J. Estes ca. 1826 15 Mar 1829 ca. 1831 18 Jun 1835 ca. 1838 7 Jun 1842 ca. 1846 Jane Stiles Jane Hoyle EU Arrington Moses Duncan Samuel M. Gunter Margaret Cope KJ Ky y 134 Ky <y Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 In. 1880, Thomas married again, this time to Sarah Wilkes. The last mention of Margaret places her age at about 65. This was in the 1870 census. She died sometime between 1870 and 1880. She had been bom about 1804. We do not know where Thomas and Margaret are buried. Note: The same family researcher who shows Dolphus Ervin Estes marrying Sarah Brazil in 1858 places a John H. Estes as the first-bom son for Thomas and Margaret Estes. This child was supposedly bom in 1825. The problem with this comes in the 1850 census .where John H. Estes shows as having been bom in Tennessee, and it shows a 13-year old brother William B. Estes, also bom in Tennessee, living with-him. It is very unlikely that Thomas and Margaret moved back and forth to Tennessee, and also very doubtful that they named two sons William. William M. Estes was bom in 1829, and William B. Estes was bom in 1837. This John Estes later moved to Texas. In the 1850 census he shows as a doctor. Additional research shows this John H. Estes to be the son of John Bacon Estes. On my second trip to Western North Carolina, I spent another 10 days researching my family I brought my uncle Ron Estes with me this time. We began our trip in North Georgia. My great-grandfather Asbury Estes married at least three times. He was married first to Theodocia Rickman in 1899, second to Dona Gunter in 1906 (my great-grandmother), and third to Harriet Anthony in 1916. He actually married Harriet Anthony twice. I discovered that three of the children of this last marriage were still living in the Canton, Georgia area, so I began my second trip by visiting with Jake, Charlie,- and Willa Rae. Jake was the eldest of the children of Asbury's third marriage. It was from this meeting that I was able to answer two questions that had been begging to be answered. The first had to do with the name James in our line of the family. I am the fourth generation first-born male child with the name James as a part of my name. My son was the fifth generation. We had been told by Dona Gunter Estes, my great-grandmother, that Asbury was named James, but I could never prove it. When I asked Willa Rae about her Daddy's name, she told me that he was named James Jacob Asbury Astin (Aston) Estes. My grandfather, Asbury's first bom with Dona Gunter, got the James and Asbury's first bom with Harriet Anthony got the Jacob. The second question that begged to be answered was what had happened that caused Asbury to be sent to the Georgia State Penitentiary. Again, Willa Rae, with the help of her brothers, filled me in on what happened. I was able to get stories from Jake, Charlie, and Willa Rae that changed my great great grandfather from being just a name in my mind to being a real live person. From North Georgia I traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia. I had discovered a cousin to my grandfather, namely Olene Estes Landis. Olene is the daughter of Fred Estes, youngest son of John Franklin Estes. She has a good grasp of first-hand knowledge of the John Franklin Estes family, her grandparents and paternal aunts and uncles. Olene provided many stories and bits of information on this part of the family. From Virginia Beach I traveled to Gaston County, North Carolina. After the Fontana Dam was built, both Fred and Wes (John Wesley) Estes moved to Gaston County. I visited with Hazel and Helen, daughters of Wes. They were able to add to the information I had on the John Franklin Estes family. As children, they grew up living next to their grandparents in Cable Cove. Helen gave me information on Cole (Coleman Estes), and filled in information on finding Laura Ashe Estes in the fireplace. From Gaston County I traveled to Swain County, where I stayed in Cherokee in cabins owned by Joyce Welch and her husband. Joyce is a cousin through Minnie Estes Greene, wife of Chris Greene. Minnie was a sister to Asbury Estes. Asbury lived with Joyce's grandmother, Minnie's daughter, shortly before he died. She was able to add information to his life story. 135 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 Joyce also had a picture of John Franklin and Laura H. Ashe Estes and their children, with the exception of Callie. (Callie had married Alphus John Cloer and moved to the state of \J Washington.) Joyce had the shoes my great great grandmother Laura Ashe Estes was wearing the day she died, and shared what she had heard about the death of Laura Estes. One of the greatest discoveries I made on this trip came as a result of Joyce lending me stacks of local genealogical publications from sun'ounding counties. At 2:30 in the morning, while scanning through an old Bone Rattler from Swain County, I read a copy of a journal recounting a visit from Idaho to Jackson County, written by Lebo Parris. Lebo Parris and Alonzo Gunter, brother of my great grandmother Dona Gunter Estes, had been living in Idaho for nearly 20 years when they came back for a visit The journal was a narrative of their visit. The exciting part for me was finding mention of Dona leaving North Carolina with her two sons and traveling to Idaho. We had known, of course, of this happening, but we did not know any of the circumstances surrounding the journey. We had been led to believe that they began the journey in Bryson City, when in fact, they got on the train at the mouth of Barkers Creek. My grandfather had been bom on Barkers Creek three years earlier. The next generation of my family, after Thomas and Margaret Crawford Estes, is Dolphus Ervin and Jane Stiles Estes. I will now continue with Dolphus and Jane. They were married 12 Jan 1848 in Haywood County, and in the 1850 census, they are shown with one child, a son William. In 1860 this family is shown living with Elijah Stiles, Jane's brother. The census shows the following children: L son age 10 T son age 8 Ky M daughter age 7 - S daughter age 5 W son age 4 R daughter age 3 J son age 1 These children are most likely the following: William Lafayette F. b. ca. 1849 m. (1) Mary Katherine Martin (2) Mary Pannell (3) Malinda Inman John Franklin b. 31 Aug 1852 m. Laura Haseltine Ashe Margaret b. ca. 1854 Sarah A. b.ca. 1857 m. George W. Green W. (son) b. ca. 1858 Rebecca • b. ca. 1859 m. John Lewis Jesse E. b. ca. 1860 m. Mary H. Wilson There is perhaps another daughter, Mary J. Estes, b. about 1862, who married James Lemmon. I have not been able to place her yet. Everything matches except that the child in the John Franklin position shows on the 1860 census with the initial "T." Assuming that the census taker did not make a mistake, there may be another explanation for this initial. [Ed. This narrative will be continued in our next issue.] Ks 136 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 C B u r i e d i n t h e H i l l s : G o n e B u t N o t F o r g o t t e n By Lynda Ensley Webster For any of you with ancestors iburied back in the "hills," (I guess that's many of us, if your ancestors came from western North Carolina), take heed. My father is Frank Ensley, last surviving child of Tolvin Ensley and Josephine P. Middleton. His great-grandmother was Mary- "Polly" Picklesimer Middleton. Polly was the widow of Nathan Middleton, who was killed at the battle of Chickamauga in 1863. After his death, the area where they lived, located in the gap between Horneyhead Mountain and Doubletop Mountain, became known as "Polly Middleton Gap." Nathan was the son of John Middleton, and grandson of Thomas Middleton, one of the earliest settlers of the area. Some time after 1800, Thomas Middleton and his small family, along with Chastains, Dentons, Picklesimers, Hoopers, and other families, migrated from Pendleton County, South Carolina to what was then Buncombe County, North Carolina, and called it home. Thomas purchased land in 1807 on Caney Fork, adjacent to Elijah Chastain's property. Sons of these families fought together in the War of 1812. During the year of 1815, Thomas' son John and daughter Charity married children of Samuel and Elizabeth Chastain Denton. By 1820, Thomas Middleton had taken his family to Georgia, leaving behind his son John Middleton, daughter-in-law Jemima Denton Middleton, and granddaughter Ann Middleton. These Middleton descendants became one of the many families that would endure the hardships of mountain life to become part of the heritage of Jackson County. Last year, my father, who is 84 years old, wanted to go to the Middleton Cemetery, located at Polly Middleton Gap, to put.flowers on his mo.ther's and sibling's graves, and to see about having headstones laid. The cemetery is about 150 years old, and like many of the first cemeteries, unmarked in comparison to those commercially run today. The best access is via SR 1752 (off Canada Road/NC 281) through what is now called Cedar Valley. Sounds easy enough so far. We had driven two and a half hours to get to Jackson County, only to get within a mile of the cemetery and find that the new owners of what was once his grandparents' home (now known as "Cedar Valley community") had dug two 4x4x4 foot pits across the state road and put up a locked gate. Needless to say, we were disappointed and frustrated. It was too far for him to walk. The sad and silent drive back to Tennessee seemed endless. How can anyone do that to a state road, you ask? Well, it seems that as long as the old roads are left accessible, the state will maintain them. If you do something to make them inaccessible, they won't, and they don't make a fuss about haying less work. Simple as that. What about right of way? Here's where we get bogged down in the red tape with the old deed granting right of way and the new deed. The new owners don't have to give you permission, and while the local courts can override, they won't necessarily. The North Carolina cemetery protection laws are weak, ,but nonetheless offer some recourse. Their primary interest is in Indian burials, or historical preservation of notorious individuals (see references that follow). Here is what the Cemetery Protection Act states: 137 lyy Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 http://www.arch.dcr.state.nc.us/cemeterv.htm#gravelaw "G.S. 65 - 74 and G.S. 65 - 75 discuss who may enter private \y" property in order to investigate, visit, or maintain a private grave or an abandoned public cemetery. A descendant of the interred or any other person with a special interest in the site may do so. He or she must notify the landowner in writing of his or her intent and then may visit periodically during daylight hours only, with the landowner's approval. If such approval cannot be obtained, the descendant may petition the clerk of superior court for an order allowing him or her access. After a special proceeding providing for notice and a hearing, the clerk may issue such an order, if deemed appropriate." My third cousin filed a petition to the court as a descendant, and also in behalf of my father. The new owners said they were unaware of there being a cemetery there (by the way, for those of you with Shook and Watson ancestors, your access is off this same road as well), didn't offer to make the road accessible, and the judge apparently did not seem to think it was important enough to grant access. Why was accessibility not volunteered by the owners or granted by the judge after the petition was presented? Could it be that the judge was not aware of the cemetery protection laws, or perhaps more petitioners were needed to deem it important? My personal feelings are probably close to yours and are as such: had someone of great notoriety, political connection, or clout been buried at Polly Middleton Gap, accessibility would be no problem. The gate would come down and the road repaired. My intent here is not to launch a personal battle, but merely to forewarn those of you with kin buried in the hills not to take cemetery accessibility for granted. The word "kin" is an old Scottish word meaning "to know" someone well. But it also meant "to love" someone. If you knew them well, then you also understood, appreciated, and accepted them; with understanding came love. Kin folk are loved ones. For those of us with kinfolk buried in the hills, they may.be gone, but not forgotten. ******************************************** Here is a list, made possible by Mrs. Lucy Middleton (now deceased), of the known individuals buried at Polly Middleton Gap Cemetery (from The Cemeteries of Jackson County): Coy Wood b. 16 Jul 1911, d. 5 Nov 1936, s/o John and Emma Jane M. It also says, "Not forgotten." Not included in this list, but buried just to the right of Coy's marker and behind Josie's are two children of Tolvin and Josie Ensley: John B. Ensley, b. 1907, and Christine Ensley (died young). Also, the dates Lucy has given for James Devaughn Middleton are incorrect. But according to my data, they would be correct for John Luther Middleton, s/o James Devaughn and Genetta Jane Ashe Middleton. Dates for James Devaughn Middleton are as follows: b. 27 Aug 1856, d. 13 Jun 1945. Dates for Genetta Jane Ashe Middleton are as follows: b. 3 Sep 1865, d. 21 May 1945. Dates for Sadie Sylvintha Middleton are 2 Jul 1894,23 Oct 1897. There are approximately 12 other graves of unknown identity. My dad believes most of them "to be children of John Luther Middleton and his wife, Eva Watson, daughter of Barnaby Watson and Septra Middleton, and that John L. is buried there also. Many of the descendants of these Middletons buried at Polly Middleton Gap Cemetery are buried at the newer Middleton Cemetery, behind the old store on the property where Ransom Middleton's widow still lives (NC 281, on the right, before coming to Bear Lake). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (HPO), a state government agency, ^ , is responsible for assisting in the protection of historic properties and sites in North Carolina. It should be of interest to many related Jackson County families. Dan and Ibby KJ were my great grandparents. Their son John was my grandfather. Following is a summary o f what I currently "think I know" or "believe I suspect" regarding the people in this photograph. Dan Phillips Daniel Harrison "Dan" Phillips was born October 27, 1848 in Haywood (now Jackson) County. He died January 21,1914 at his home on Cane Creek, near Cullowhee. Dan's parents were William "BUI" Phillips (1813-1863) and Nancy Parker Phillips (1820- 1901). His paternal grandparents were Daniel Phillips (1788-1850) and Ruth Farris Phillips (1791-C.1872). His maternal grandparents were William Solomon Parker (C.1770-C.1845) and Martha Pleasant Anderson Parker (c.l 174-1840). Dan had nine brothers and sisters. The ten children, in order of birth and then-spouses, were: 1. Sarah Ann "Sallie Ann" Phillips (1840-1930) married Barlett Newton Watson. 2. Rebecca Laura Phillips (1841-1873) married A.W. Johnston. 3. John W. Phillips (c.l843-1864), died during the Civil War and does not appear to have married. 4. Daniel Harrison Phillips (1848-1914) married Isabella Elizabeth Crawford. 5. Merritt Rickman "Rick" Phillips (1849-1938) married Mary Matilda Blanton. 6. Robert O. "Bob" PhiUips (1852-1872) married first, Mila R. "Millie" Brendle and after her death married second, DeUa Brinkley. KJ 7. Margaret Melvina "Vinie" PhiUips (1852-1931) married Rev. Thomas Franklin "Frank" Arrington. 8. Artie C. PhiUips (1853-1939) married Columbus D. Bryson. 9. William Gilead "GUI" Phillips (1856-1931) married Laura Alice Tritt. 10. Solomon Newton "Newt" PhUlips (1858-1924) married Etta Maria Foster. Isabella Crawford IsabeUa Elizabeth "Ibby" Crawford was born April 12,1853 in Jackson County. She died December 9, 1915 in Jackson County. The 1916 date on her marker is probably incorrect. Her death certificate gives a 1915 date o f death and her death is recorded in the 1915 book. Ibby"s parents were John N. Crawford (1821-1904) and Elvira "Varrie" Henson (1818-1902). Her paternal grandparents are unknown to me. Her maternal grandparents were Rev. WUUam Thomas Henson (1792-1868) and Jane "Jincie" Cole (1798-1888). I've not yet looked closely into the Crawford line; however, Ibby Crawford appears to have had six brothers and sisters. I beUeve the seven chUdren, in order of birth and their spouses, to have been 1. Charlotte Crawford (c. 1846-?) 2. Phillip Crawford (c. 1848-?) 3. Jane Crawford (c.l850-?) 4. Susan Crawford (1852-1931) married BUI Painter. ^ 146 Ky Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 5. Isabella Elizabeth "Ibby" Crawford (1853-1915) married Daniel Harrison PhiUips 6. WUliam EUis "BUly" Crawford (1860-1944) married Emma Painter. 7. Wilson Bartlett Crawford (1862-1942) married first, Sarah M. Dills and second, Elizabeth L. "BeUe" Leopard. Their Family Dan PhiUips and Ibby Crawford were married in Jackson County on February 27, 1871 in a ceremony performed by A.W. Vaughn. They settled at the mouth of Cane Creek near Cullowhee, where Dan had a blacksmith shop and farmed the land on both sides of what is now the old CuUowhee-Sylva highway. Dan was an active member of the CuUowhee Baptist Church for many years and was involved in many o f the church improvements made between 1870-1900. I am not absolutely sure how many children Dan and Ibby had. In addition to the seven shown in the photo, an eighth has been confirmed through family oral history and various written record's. These eight chUdren, seven of whom were living and are shown in the photograph, were: 1. Rebecca EmeUne "Tid" PhUUps (1872-1918) married John Lee Crawford. John was the son of Joseph Crawford and Mary Ensley. Tid and John had four children, Gertrude, WiUa Mae, Effie Belle and Frank. 2. Betty Jane PhUUps (1873-1951) married Henry Bascomb Hughes, son o f John Hughes and Sarah MerrUl. Betty Jane and Henry had three children, Texie, Glenn and Henry, Jr. 3. John GiUiad PhUUps (1877-1966) married Clara Bertha "Bertie" Smith, daughter of Lewis J. Smith and Clarissa "Clara" Coward. John and Bertie had seven chUdren, Carl, Blanche, Robert, Jake, John Jr., Thelma and Helen. (Jake PhiUips was my father.) 4. James "Jirmnie" PhUUps (c.1884-1891) 5. Nannie Phillips (1889-1970) married George B. Coward, son of WUliam Coward and Elizabeth Queen. Nannie and George had seven chUdren, Virginia, Isabelle, Kate, Verda, BUI, Fred and George Jr. 6. Rufus Daniel "Rufe" PhiUips (1893-1948) married Buriie Long, daughter of James Long and Hester Wood. Rufe and Buriie had six chUdren, Ruby, Peg, Roy, Dan, Laura BeUe and Jim. 7. Eva "Evie" PhiUips (1895-1996) married first, Tolvin Stiles and second, Oscar Samuel Ensley. Evie and Oscar had a son, Gene, who died in infancy, a daughter Ruth, and a foster daughter Doris. 8. EsteUa "SteU" PhiUips (1897-1984) married Charles Harrison "CharUe" Stephens, son of John Stephens and Serbia Coward. SteU and Charlie had ten children, Kenneth, Durward, Harry, BUI, Dan, Dave, Ed, Mary NeU, Fannie and Shirley. Son Jirmnie died in 1891 at age 7, after being kicked in the head by a mule he was holding while it grazed. This was forever a source of great sorrow to my grandfather 147 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2001 who often related the story to me when I was a boy over half a century later, usually whenever he thought I wasn't being careful enough around his mules. y Possibly, Dan and Ibby had four other chUdren who either died at birth or died during infancy or childhood. Dan and Ibby are buried at Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery and buried alongside them are: Fanny PhiUips (no dates) Infant Boy PhUUps (no dates) James PhUUps (no dates) Robert PhUUps (no dates) WUUam PhiUips (no dates) Daniel PhUUps (27 Oct 1848 21 Jan 1914) IsabeUa PhiUips (12 Apr 1853 9 Dec 1916 w/o Daniel PhiUips) - Note: date o f death should be 9 Dec 1915) Certainly, there are sufficient gaps between the births of Dan and Ibby's known children to support the birth of four other children. However, some might be the graves of grandchUdren. I am sure someone knows - 1 just haven't run across the information yet. It will be interesting to continue researching this and I welcome any information anyone else might have.
