Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. F r om the Editor The membership deserves the mother of aU mea culpa expressions from the editor. This, folks, is the latest one yet, but in keeping with our past decisions, no excuses will be forthcoming. If anyone is interested, however, the garden grows very, very weU this year, for which we are grateful, and it has taken precedence over everything else, we fear. Enjoy in this issue the remarkable work of Louise Hodge as she brings forward a timeline showcasing an ancestor of hundreds of Jackson County people. Read also the fine work of Lonnie Daves, BUI and Mack, and the customary potpourri of fine contributions from your Society members. We especially like the photo section this time, because it aUows us the opportunity to highlight members whose names don't appear in this publication very often: Thanks, Carl Sutton and Helen Gunter Toler. You are reminded in several places in this issue to submit your Holden Award form. For new members, we explain that this is a Distinguished Service Award endowed by JCGS members Mary Katherine Sherrill Lowder and Nancy Sherrill Wilson in honor of their maternal grandparents. The award is presented at our August picnic, along with the Daniel Washington Deitz Memorial Award honoring a person who has given distinguished service to our own Society. Betty passed away May 13 and was interred in Mount Zion Cemetery in Estacada, Oregon. A number of our members knew Betty, and we express our sympathy to the Keever family of Dillsboro, as well as the Luedtke family in Oregon. We are also grateful to JCGS member Cleatha Moody Thomas, who sent us the obituary from The Oregonian. As with all of these sad happenings, we know that Betty is now having her genealogy questions answered in full, and for that we are in gratitude. Announcement Make sure that you have your calendar marked for August 9 for the Society's annual picnic at the WCU picnic area. Bring a covered dish (or several), and meet for a good meal about 6:30, then stay for the presentation of our awards. Your Holden Award nomination is enclosed in this issue, and we request that it be submitted by August 1. In 2000, our two meetings with meals were huge successes, and we trust that we can continue the good work. Hodge [Ed. The following research is contributed by JCGS member Louise F. Hodge of Midlothian, Virginia. Since a number of our members are descended from this family, we find it a very valuable example of historical and genealogical research. The chronological format is one we have used infrequently before, and we are appreciative of the hours of organizational work that it entails.] Evidence is in favor of Charles Frady being Carl Simon Wrede born about 1755 in Braunschweig, Germany. Records show that Carl Simon Wrede came to Canada in 1776 with the Brunswick troops commanded by Baron Friedrich von Riedesel. The origin of the Frady name has long been a mystery. The conclusion has been drawn that the pronunciation is a case of keeping the sound of the surname "Wrede" but changing the spelling to "Frady" or its variations. Compelling evidence is the name Charles Frady in a 1790 deed in Culpeper County, Virginia, which places him in the right place at the right time to be Carl Simon Wrede. Nearly 30,000 German soldiers from six principalities in Germany came to America to fight with the British in the Revolutionary War. These included Braunschweig, Hesse-Cassel, Waldeck, Hesse-Hanau, Anspach-Bayreuth, and Anhalt-Zerbst. About 12,000 of their soldiers did not return to Germany. They were either killed, died of disease or injury, deserted, or left service in one way or the other. About 5,000 of the 30,000 soldiers were sent from the Dutchy of Braunschweig. All of these Germans are sometimes generically called "Hessians"; however, these troops from Braunschweig were called "Braunschweigers" or "Brunswickers" in old American records. They were sometimes called "mercenaries" who according to definition are soldiers who fight for personal gain at any place for any cause. They were not mercenaries. They were allies of the British Crown. They were paid a small salary, but it was the Duke of Braunschweig who profited from their services. More than 3,000 of these Brunswickers did not return to Germany, and Carl Simon Wrede was one of these. The information for the following Timeline is taken from court, church, land, and history records. An effort has been made to keep the variant spellings of the Frady name as they appear in the records, but it is not unusual for names to be spelled different ways in the same document. Surnames are capitalized for clarity. 1755-Catl Simon Wrede born in Braunschweig, Germany. 1775-At age 20-beginning of the American Revolutionary War. King George III of Great Britian contracted with six German principalities, including Braunschweig, for armies to send to America. 1776-At age 21-Marched from Braunschweig to Stade, on the Elbe near Hamburg, Germany. At Stade the regiments were reviewed and then swore an oath of allegiance to Great Britian before boarding the eight ships that were to transport the troops to America. There were six regiments and one battalion sent to America from the Dutchy of Braunschweig in 1776. The first division had departed two months earlier. The second division was made up of Regiment Specht, Regiment von Rhetz, and Battalion von Bamer, each consisting of five companies. The Leib company to which Carl Simon Wrede belonged, along with two other companies of Regiment von Rhetz, had three officers, ten uncommissioned officers, three drummers, a surgeon and 106 privates, six wives, and five servants. This information was taken from Specht's Journal by Helga Doblin. 1776-At age 21-On the morning of 30 May, set sail on the Dutch ship Frow Johanna for America. The troops lined the rails to watch the German countryside as the ships sailed down the Elbe to the North Sea. After a stop at Portsmouth, England, the ships headed for Canada. 75 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2001 1776-At age 21~On 17 and 18 September, after more than three months of a long and difficult voyage in which the troops were forced to share extremely cramped quarters below deck, arrived KJ in Quebec. Records show that in all the regiments nineteen died on the trip and 131 had to be hospitalized with scurvy upon arrival. 1777-At age 22-After wintering in Canada the Brunswickers and the Hesse-Hanau Regiment under British General Burgoyne headed south toward Albany. The army was beset with heat, insects, and thunderstorms and with bad or no roads. After victories at Fort Ticonderoga and Hubbardton, the army ran into stiffening American resistance as they approached Albany. A German detachment was defeated and captured at Bennington, Vermont. With no help coming from the south and west as expected, the British and Germans found themselves isolated with supplies dwindling. 1777- At age 22-On 17 October, after two battles at Saratoga, General Burgoyne was forced to surrender to American General Horatio Gates. Records show that 1,122 were killed, wounded, or missing and the number surrendering at 2,431, most of whom were Brunswickers. There were only 319 of the original 530 privates of Regiment von Rhetz of which Carl Simon Wrede belonged. 1777-At age 22~From 27 October to 07 November, the troops marched to Winter Hill (near Boston), Massachusetts, with the promise of being returned to Germany. After both sides failed to ratify the agreement made at Saratoga, these troops became prisoners of war and became known as the Convention Army. This Army consisted of the Brunswickers, the Hesse Hanauer, and the British under General Burgoyne. Many of the troops left rank on this march. Some sought refuge in German communities, and others joined the colonists. 1778-At age 23-About 09 November, Convention Army left Winter Hill and began the march in several divisions about 700 miles to Albemarle County (near Charlottesville), Virginia. The troops were very disheartened on this march, and the George Washington Papers record that one out of six of the Germans slipped out of rank and disappeared into the countrysides. 1779-At age 24-On 15 January, the troops arrived at the barracks just outside Charlottesville. On the arrival the barracks were unfinished and without roofs. They made a life for themselves completing the barracks, planting gardens, etc. The site is located on present-day Barracks Road. 1780-At age 25-ln December, the Duke of Braunschweig issued a decree to General von Riedesel offering his troops an opportunity to remain in America after the war was over. There were no jobs or pensions for them in Germany. 1781-At age 26-On 03 or 06 February, Carl Simon WREDE became a free man-reported as "deserted" from Winchester, Virginia. The Brunswick Convention troops began a march from Charlottesville to Winchester beginning 20 February arriving there 05 March. Apparently, he had already left before this march. Perhaps he was reported missing after they arrived. "Riedesel's Order Book" now held by the New York Historical Society, lists "Simon WREEDE, deserted 06 February, Regiment von Rhetz, Leib Company, 5'4" (Prussian measurement, probably 57" by our standards), bom Braunschweig, Germany, Evangelical (Lutheran), single, 5 years service, 17 years" (must be an error). The Leib Company may best be described as the company kept around the regimental headquarters. Clifford Neal Smith's Monograph #1 lists Carl Simon Wrede as age 24 and his desertion as 03 February. Ages were reported as of 1779 according to John Merz, host of the AMREV-HESSIANS Rootsweb List, making him 21 in 1776. Ky Ky 76 c Ky Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2001 1781-1793- At age 26 to 38~The name "Carl VREDE" appears on the Church Order of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church Community in Culpepper Co. in Virginia (later called Hebron). He is one of 179 males who agreed to support the church and adhere to a certain lifestyle. This document was translated from the original German in 1997. The names are undated, but it is likely that his name was placed on the list sometime between 1781 and 1793. This church still exists, and it is the oldest Lutheran church in America with a continuous service. Only German was spoken in the services until about 1800. These records are kept in a vault in the Madison County Courthouse, but there are microfilms at the Virginia State Library. 1782- At age 27-During the Convention Army's march back north with the anticipation of being sent back to Germany, Congress offered the Convention Army paroles by paying $80. Some endentured themselves to the colonists for three years to pay this debt. Carl Simon Wrede was already establishing himself in Culpeper County (later Madison). 1782~At age 27-On November 17 (25th Sunday after Trinity). "Carl [VORETE] and wife Barbara" took communion according to a listing in the Hebron Lutheran Church Register 1750-1825. Also in an undated listing in the Register, "Carl WREDE and wife Sara" baptized a child, sponsors omitted. 1783-At age 28-On 08 February, a~decree by the Duke of Braunschweig authorized the discharge of all soldiers and officers wishing to stay in America. He feared the returning soldiers would bankrupt his treasury. From 08 August to 23 September, four separate transports arrived in Stade from where the troops marched to Braunschweig where they were given heroes' welcome. 1783-At age 28-Charles VERAITY paid personal taxes in Culpeper County. 1787-At age 32-Charies FRAWDY paid Culpeper County personal tax. 1789~1796-At age 34 to 41-George Washington served as the 1st president. 1790-At age 35-1 st official census (he is not listed). 1790-At age 35-On 18 December, Charles FRADY lived on a 32-acre tract that he was renting near Kirtley's Road, now Hwy 29 near Brightwood, about four miles from the Hebron Church and the town of Madison. (Culpeper County Deeds 1789-1790, pp 569-572). This part of Culpeper later became Madison County. It was through researching the land owned by his German neighbors that the exact location of the land on which Charles Frady lived was found. It is assumed that he settled here because of the common bond of language and culture. 1793-At age 38-On 17 October, Charles FRADA purchased 150 acres for 90 pounds in Surry County (later Yadkin), North Carolina, from Jacob Rudolph on Deep and Turner Creeks near the place the Great Wagon Road crosses the Shallowford on the Yadkin River (Surry DB F:106). North Carolina Grant #2819. Entered 20 November 1830. Ky SO Ky Ky Ky Journeys Through Jackson May-June 2001 1830-Buncombe County census: Widow Elizabeth Frady, presumed to be Charles Frady's wife, listed as follows: 1 female 50 to 60,1 male 20 to 30 (presumed to be James of Cane Creek), 1 male 15 to 20 (presumed to be Amos). She is living next door to Lewis FRADY. She does not appear in the 1840 census, and it assumed that she had died. According to Defrees family records in FamilyTreeMaker, James Defrees of Surry County had a daughter Elizabeth who married Charles Frady. Birth dates for Elizabeth are given as both 1772 and 1781. James Defrees was a large land owner in Surry County. It is reasonable to assume that Charles Frady had three wives: Barbara and Sara of the Hebron Church records and Elizabeth. No record of his marriages have been found. Charles Frady's burial place is unknown The deed recordation in December 1827 is the last mention of his name in the records. As far as it is known, there was not one clue passed down to this generation that Charles Frady was a Brunswicker. It would appear that at least initially he was committed to go back to Germany. It is likely he saw an opportunity for a better life here. Records indicate that he could read and write, and perhaps he wrote home to his family. Most likely he never returned to Germany. It is unclear which William, the son or grandson, is the one in the land records in 1828 and 1829. In the early 1830s two of-his sons, William and Charles, migrated to Indiana. Son William reported in the 1870 Davis County, Iowa, census that he was born in Virginia and that his father was "foreign bom". Sons Ephraim and Amos reported in the 1850 North Carolina census that they were born in Virginia. It seems unlikely that Amos was bom in Virginia, but it appears that he knew the family came from Virginia. Son John reported in the 1870 North Carolina census that he was born in Virginia. Son Henry does not appear in the 1830 or later censuses, and it is assumed that he had died. No record of a will or estate settlement has been found in the Buncombe County Courthouse for either Charles or Elizabeth Frady. There were several courthouse fires during the 1800s. His children appear to have been: Polly, Henry, John, Ephraim, William, Charles, Sarah, George W., Lewis, Unknown daughter, James (who lived on Cane Creek), and Amos. There is a family tradition in the Frady family that the immigrant Frady came to America with brothers. Records show that there were four other WREDE Brunswick soldiers who did not return to Germany: Georg, Johann, Heinrich, and another Heinrich. There is no further information about Georg at this time. Johann is found in the 1783 immigration records in Quebec. Heinrich is reported killed 06 July 1777 in New York. The other Heinrich is believed to be Heinrich FRAADE/variant spellings found in Nova Scotia records. One of his descendants lives in Toronto today and goes by the last name of FREDA. No evidence has been found at this time that any of these men were related to Carl Simon Wrede. Frady researcher, Marjorie Stansel of Georgia, in 2000 spent a day in the State Archives at Wolfenbuettel, Germany, researching church records but did not find Carl Simon but did find others with the Wrede name. The Wrede name is a very old one in Germany with records dating back to 1200. It is hoped that the leap back to Germany will ultimately be successful. Throughout American history there has been somewhat of a stigma attached to the Germans who came to fight with the British. It appears that Charles Frady shed any such stigma with a productive life here. There seems to be little difference in these soldiers' services to their country and our own soldiers who go abroad to fight with our allies. A tradition in the "Western" Fradys credits him with being a "godly" man. Records show that these soldiers carried their Bibles in their pockets. History provides us with a great deal of insight into this man's life as a Brunswicker. 81 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2001 KJ The following poem, "The Hessians", is by Pearl S. Sensenig. It appeared in the Journal of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association, vol. 1, no. 3 (1979), p. 21. By order of a despot king. They came across the sea To help England fight the colonies, Who wanted to be free. But in some there was a spark of life, Which grew into a flame; And as they saw man's freedom grow, Wished for themselves the same. And tho they paid a bitter price, Left family, home and land, They never would regret it, As they came to understand Man was not bom to blindly do, The will of a despot's whim; But he must follow the golden rule, And do what is right to him. And so the cause of freedom, Is what they came to know, And they settled in an alien land, To help a new nation grow. Pearl S. Sensenig Frady researchers, Betty Riddle of Jasper, Georgia, and John Frady of Madison, Alabama, are acknowledged for their assistance with the census records. Spouse, James D. Hodge, helped with the Revolutionary War records. \ J K J 82 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2001 ^ 1949 D e a t h C e r t i f i c a t e s o f J a c k s o n C o u n t y P e r s o n s B o r n P r i o r t o 1 9 0 0 [Key: Name of deceased; date of birth; place of birth; 1949 date of death; township; father's name; mother's name; informant; informant's address; cemetery.
