Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that me editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society accepts no advertising for mis publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We suppose that there have been better gatherings than the December meeting of the Society, but if so, we were not invited. No fewer than 50 JCGS members and guests came to the Society office to enjoy a *y covered dish supper and the distribution of Jackson County Heritage, Volume II. Not only can these folks do genealogical research, they can also cook. And see Ruth Shuler's quote on page 13 of this issue for a very concise analysis of our group. We begin the new year as we finished the old: busy, busy, busy. We easily passed the quota for Volume I reprint orders, and we are hopeful that we will see copies of it for sale in the office by late March. Volume II has sold like the proverbial breakfast food, and our other publications sell briskly also. In this issue of JTJ, find no fewer than fifteen contributors, fourteen of them JCGS members. This issue, we believe you will agree, is chock-full of genealogy. In the cold days and nights that we still have ahead, sit back and enjoy the work of our JCGS members. We guarantee it to be of more substance than reality tv. What a distinct pleasure it is to help organize the work of so many dedicated persons! "I am in the final stages of writing a book on the life of Rev. William Floyd Cook (1865-1921) who was married to S. Alice Parker. They raised their family at Caney Fork, and their descendants are numerous. To date, we have identified 446 of those descendants, but there are many more. Common surnames are Cook, Corne, Hooper, McMahan, Moore, Parker, Queen, Sitton, among many others. I am asking your readers two things: (l)printable'cOpies of any pictures mat are* available of Floyd and/or Alice, and (2) any stories; anecdotes, etc.,-in reference to Floyd personally, his family and/or ministry. His Bible has not been located either, and notes from it would be a tremendous source to include. I am working under a. deadline, so would appreciate a response as soon as possible. Any materials can be dropped off at the JCGS office. Please leave them in an envelope marked 'William Floyd Cook', and explain to the person who is on turn, who they are for."- Rev. It is a picture of the daughters of Marion Adams, oldest son of Bannister Adams, a well-known Cullowhee name. The oldest girl in the picture is Polly Ann Adams Taylor, the middle one is Lilly May Adams Price, and the youngest is Dorothy Matilda Adams Williams. Mrs. Price died December 28, 2000, in Mount Vernon, Washington, at the age of 104. Journeys Through Jackson January February 2001 Ky J C G S P h o t o A l b u m Ky The fabulous photograph above is courtesy of JCGS member Gene Middleton. It shows the Rocky Hollow church and school. Rocky Hollow was eventually absorbed into Cedar Baptist Church. The woman on the left is Mary "Polly'' Picklesimer; the man with the prominent beard is D.W. Middleton; to his left is Mariah Chastain. Sterling Melton is just to the left of the upturned hat, and Robert Middleton is second from the right on the porch. The picture was made between 1900 and 1910, and was in the possession of Grover Brown. Journeys Through Jackson January February 2001 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m v ^ Mystery Photo Page These photographs are among those shared with the Society by Francie Monteith Hoell. She does not know the identities of the persons. The picture above scans more clearly than the original, which is very old and faded. We can tell that it is a family with parents and probably four children, possibly a younger sibling of one of the parents in the back. Below-left, unidentified babies. Below right, unidentified girl and car. His heirs included his wife Naomi and children Edmund, Rebecca, Thomas, Edith, Sally, Polly, Milly, and Warren. These heirs were involved in litigation for some years over the details of the administration of Shadrach's estate. In an undated petition in Wake County* court, u.. .Solomon Segroves & Sally his wife, of Thomas Barker, Polly Barker an infant by her next friend Solomon Segroves & Miley Barker an ktfant by her next friend Anthony Pilkinton humbly sheweth, that Shadrach Barker died intestate about 1798 leaving your petitioners Sally, Rebecca, Thomas, Polly, Miley, and Edith (whom your petitioners are informed has removed'to a distant [sic] and there married) his only children leaving at the same time a widow Neomi who is still alive..." In a 25 September 1808 document, land was apportioned to the widow, to Thomas Barker, to Solomon Segroves and wife Salley, to Warren Barker, to Polley Barker, to Mylah Barker, to Edith Barker, to Anthony Pilkinton in right of his wife Rebeckah.".." Then in 1825, Warren, Milly, and Rebecca petitioned the Wake County court mentioning Edy married t o 3 e r r y Herring, Polly married to. John Segroves, Milly married to William Cross. In an 1825 document, Milly is married to William "Crisp." [Ed. An Elizabeth Barker married William "Crye" in Haywood County in 1822 and named her father as "Shedrick." We wonder if "Crye" were a misreading of "Crisp" and if Elizabeth and Milly are not in actuality the same person. Also, we wonder if Rebecca, Shadrach's daughter who married Anthony Pilkington, would later have a presence or descendants in Swain County, where "Pilkington is a well-known name. According to the various researchers, Millie would later live in Graham County and would become the mother of Joel Lee Crisp. Edith Barker and Greenberry Herron also certainly lived in the mountains of western North Carolina. The daughters who married into-the Segroves or Seagraves family and the other brothers, Thomas and Warren, do not appear to have lived closer than Burke County.] Edmund Barker, born in Wake County about 1769, died in Macon County in November of 1849, according to the Mortality Schedule of the 1850 Federal Census for Macon County. He had married Polly Jones 28 November 1799 in Wake County. Their identifiable children were the following: Brantley Barker (b. ca. 1803, Wake) m. Mary Stillwell 12 Apr 1838 in Haywood Calvin Barker (b. ca. 1805, NC) m. Lidia Perry 27 Jan 1835 in Haywood Warren Barker (b. ca. 1812-1815, HaywOod) m. Hannah Cabe 19 Mar 1838 in Macon Jason Barker (b. ca, 1815-1820, Haywood) m. Catherine Cabe 8 Nov 1838 in Macon Eliza Barker (b. ca. 1823, Macon) Mary Barker (b. ca. 1826,"Macon) Journeys Through Jackson January February 2001 hi Macon County records for the 1830's, mention is made in several documents of a "Patsy" Barker, who might well have been another daughter of Edmund. (Her son with John Cockerham - see the September - October 2000 issue of JTJ - appears to have been raised by family members.) Of these families, the descendants of the two middle sons have continued to live in the Jackson and Swain area. The Calvin Barker family eventually moved to Arkansas. The children of Warren Barker and Hannah Cabe: Ky Esther Elizabeth Barker (6 Feb 1839 - 14 Jan 1931) m. John H. Martin Mary Ann Barker (12 Jan 1840 - ?) m. Frady Hannah Barker (ca. 1841 - ?) m. Candas Oma Conner Martha Ehnina Barker (23 Nov 1855 - 12 Jan 1940) m. Jason Frady Eda Lucinda Barker (1858 -?) m. Robert Baird From the Web site where several Barker researchers add and glean information, some of the work postulates that Warren Barker was also the father of two children by Edith Ellige Brooks. These children were Mary Magdalene Brooks Barker (Sep 1861 - Mar 1932), who married David Elias Barker; and William Grant Brooks Barker (9 Jun 1865 - 27 Jul 1938), who married Mary Frances Frady, Martha Ann Barker, Mary Jimmie Lakey, and Elzie Barker. While descendants of several of these children have continued to live in Jackson County, one will notice that a majority of these folks lived in the Alarka section of Swain County. We must remember that Alarka is very close to the Savannah section of Jackson County, by going over the mountain rather than around it, as modern highways do. The Barkers, Fradys, and Cockerhams (Cochrans) were all names found at Savannah, and their trip to Alarka was not a difficult one. Ky The Coleman Bryson Family of Cullowhee and Comanche County, Texas Coleman Bryson was the youngest son of John W. Bryson and his second wife Jane Poston of Cullowhee. Coleman was born 23 Mar 1828, and died at a young age 14 Dec 1866. He married Louise Bumgarner, b. 23 May 1835, d. 20 Mar 1905, daughter of Charles and Rebecca Odom Bumgarner. Coleman and Louise are buried at Cullowhee Baptist Church. Children of Coleman and Louise Bumgarner Bryson: Louise Bryson (b. ca. 1851) Albert Newton Bryson (b. ca. 1852) m. Bryson (b. 1867) m. Elizabeth Dial * Obviously, one of the highlights of this family was that many of its members moved to Texas. Considering'their father's early demise (possibly before William was even bom, and.with only the oldest three beyond childhood), their opportunities may have been limited here, even though they were born into one of Jackson County's most numerous and influential families. No record emerges for the oldest daughter Louise. Albert Newton Bryson, married Meriah Wike 12 Sep 1872 at Andrew Wike's residence. Their children were Benie, who married C. K. Reed; Wesley, who married Edna Duke; Sadie, who married G.B. Await; Charles; and Edward, who married Annie Williamson. [Ed. The notes submitted by Harry Bumgarner do not indicate where this family lived.] John Hix Bryson, the second son, moved to Comanche County, Texas, where he married Eleanor Martin 20 Apr 1881. Their children were William, who married Nellie Cooper; Charles, who married Mattie Burry;' Gerald, who married Mattie Leggms;- Blanch, who married Frank Everett; SaUie, who married Elbert Whitfield; Bryant;. Nell, who married J.B. Stacy; Eva Lee, who married Houston McCulloch; and Myrtle, who married Curtis Stephens. Rebecca Bryson/ the second daughter, married WiUiam Harry KeUer 31 Jan 1884. He died 4 Nov 1897, she lived until 31 Jul 1940, and both are buried at Cullowhee Baptist Church. Their children were Trudie (b. ca. 1885); Daisy (1888), who married Lonnie Bateman; Myrtle Mae (1890); William Harry (1893); Lucretia (1895), who married Norris Welch; Charles (1896), who married Muriel Carrington; and Bethuel, who married Mary Bird. Charles V. Bryson married (27 Nov 1890) Minerva Forehand in Comanche County, Texas. Their children were Ruth, who married Edward Leggins; Kate, who married Cary Stark; and May. Andrew Coleman Bryson married (ca. 1895) Jeannie Girdwood in Texas. Their sons were Charles Andrew and Norman Wesley. James Logan Bryson married (21 Dec 1893) Ada Oberthier iri Comanche County. Their children were Goldie, who married Carl Wilson; Fay, who married Claud Chastain; and Hubbard, who married Romeo Walker. William M. Bryson "also settled in Comanche County, Texas. He married Elizabeth Dial, and their children were Marie, who married Charles Roberts; Leonard, who married Mary McAfee; Joe, who married Mae Bumgarner; Maggie, who married W.H. HiU; and Creo. Orfe Hooper Family o f Jackson County Ky Sam Hooper, known as "Sonny Sam" or " Sam Sonny," was born 2 Jul 1866 and died 1 Mar 1927. He was a son of Samuel Hooper and Nancy Watson of Jackson County, and he had older siblings Baxter Aaron (b. ca. 1856), Eve (b. ca. 1858), Adam (b. ca. 1859), and Henry Floyd (b. ca. 1865). Their father Samuel was in turn a son of James Hooper, born about 1790 according Journeys Through Jackson January February 2001 to the 1850 Macon County census. Some disagreement exists on whether this James was a son of Absalom Hooper and Sarah. Sam "Sonny" Hooper married (28 Jul 1886) Elizabeth Coggins, daughter of Fate and Narcissa Mathis Coggins. (Narcissa was a daughter of Peter Mathis Sr. and SaUie Frady.) Their children were the foUowing: Caldonia Hooper (ca. 1887) m. James Jackson DiUs Daniel Corsie Hooper (8 Jun 1889 - 26 Nov 1965) m. Maggie Frady Bertie Serila Hooper (16 Mar 1894 - 16 May 1976) m. Frank Edgar O'Neal Bishop Richard Edgar Hooper (23 Jul 1896 - 11 Jan 1971) m. Ennis Thompson Mary Hooper (7 Jan 1911 - 12 Dec 1999) m. Rufus Buchanan, Ralph Jones EUzabeth reported 5 of 7 children Uving in the 1900 census, so one would assume that a chUd between Daniel and Bertie died, then another between Richard Edgar and Radford. In 1910, she reported 7 of 9 Uving, and since Mary was not yet born, she had a total of 10 chUdren. Sam "Sonny" and EUzabeth Coggins divorced about 1917, and Sam later married Naomi Mathis (1899 - 1981). They were the parents of Henry Hooper (b. 2 Feb 1919) Howard Wilburn Hooper (b. 23 Mar 1922) Sarah EUen Hooper Daisy Hooper Sam Hooper is buried at CuUowhee Baptist Church. BUI Bishop found a one-year discrepancy in the death date on the stone and the death date recorded in the Jackson County death certificates. EUzabeth Coggins Hooper married Joe Cabe after the divorce, and she is buried at Double Springs Cemetery on top of CuUowhee Mountain. EUzabeth had been born 9 Jun 1867, and died 17 Jan 1961. Sam Hooper's second wife, Naomi Mathis Hooper, born 15 May 1899, died 23 Sep 1981, is also buried at Double Springs. [Ed. As one reads mis outline, one will see that these families have a strong SpeedweU - Fall.Cliff - CuUowhee Mountain presence. The Coggins surname has always been associated with the CuUowhee Mountain section, and the Mathis and Hooper families Usted here were also part of this community, stretching down the mountain to SpeedweU and the TiUey Creek areas. We have always been intrigued about the resting place of the older Mathis families. They were in Macon County by the time of the 1850 census, presumably living in CuUowhee (in the WUson Creek area that we just discussed above), yet there are no cemetery records that show the Older family (Peter Mathis Sr.). We wonder if there is a forgotten or abandoned cemetery somewhere between WUson Creek and the Double Springs church, or if the family members Ue in unmarked graves at Double Springs or Speedwell or possibly even Cullowhee Baptist. This would be a fine challenge for a family member to undertake.] >y Ky ^J Journeys Through Jackson January February 2001 Ky 1 9 4 7 D e a t h C e r t i f i c a t e s o f J a c k s o n C o u n t y P e r s o n s B o r n P r i o r t o 1 9 0 0 c [Key to reading the following: Name of deceased; spouse; date of birth; place of birth; date of death; township; father's name; father's place of birth; mother's name; mother's place of birth; informant's name.ancTaddress; cemetery. His father Bartlett Dills (d. 24 Feb 1873, buried in Dills Cemetery on Fisher Creek) was married (first wife's name?) prior to his marriageto Nellie Parris, and had a family of several children. Nellie had a daughter (Cynthia) with Joseph Messer prior to her marriage. Bartlett Dills would marry Esther Harris 17 Jun 1848 after Nellie's death; and become the father of Allen Bartlett Dills. He would marry a fourth time to Fanny Gibson Parris, widow of Alfred Parris, Ellender's brother. Some researchers mistakenly list this Bartlett as the husband of Elizabeth Jones. Elizabeth's husband named Bartlett Dills was actually a son of Peter Dills and Betsy Parris, and was thus a nephew of the first Bartlett Dills. He was also a nephew of Ellender Parris Dills and Alfred Parris.] 31 Journeys Through Jackson January February 2001 A n 1 8 1 0 L e t t e r t o J o h n B e c k [Ed. JCGS member Dorris Dills Beck submits the following letter. Its genealogical importance is self-explanatory, but we are always glad to see materials that date from this time period.] Mr. John Beck North Carolina Haywood County Post Office at the County Seat State of Indiana, Gibson County Oct 12, 1810 Dear Son, 'Ky Through the mercies of God we are all well at present. Hoping these few lines will find you and your family in good health. We have not heard anything from you since you was in Roan [Ed. Rowan County?] about three years ago. We are all living in the state of Indiana on the White River, at the fork of the Wabash, about seventeen miles from Vencennes. Luis is still single and lived with me. Fredrick and Henry and Richard White has all moved from Elk River and lives close by me. Henry Bordeno has also moved here last winter from Carolina, and I expect Jacob and Mary will move out this fall. We received a letter from Jacob a few days ago. We have a fine country of land and bids fair for ^_J one of the most flourishing states in the union. It settles very fast. We have had a very dry season. But there will be fine crops. There is a prospect of plenty of grain. If you should think of coming to see us, we live in Gibson County, State of Indiana on the south side of White River, White Oak Spring settlement. I want you to write us as soon as you get this letter. , Direct your letters to the State of Indiana, Gibson County, White Oak Springs Post Offfice. So conclude by ascribing ourselves your affectionate father and mother til death. Jacob Beck Mary Beck [Ed. He and siblings Ludwick Beck and Catharine Beck James are shown as children of Jacob Beck (1725-1775) who married (1) 1 Dec 1745 Moselem Lutheran Church, Berks Co.
