We bring the last year of the millenium (or the first year, depending on one's point of view in that absurd argument) to a close with much satisfaction as we look back over the year 2000. We easily set a membership record again this year, with 260 souls now counted on our rolls. Thanks to the hard work of many, but especially that of Ruth Shuler and Dorris Beck, we expect a Volume H any day now. We are on a sound financial footing, and our members contribute excellent genealogical materials to this publication, for which we are both thankful and proud. Other highlights of the year include the donation of the Barker Collection, which more than doubled our library holdings; the endowment of the Daniel Deitz Award, which honored the memory of one of our most faithful members; the August visit of the North Carolina Genealogical Society officers and Directors, which gave us an opportunity to host that fine group; the excellent programs presented to us by persons with an incredible breadth of talents, including the absolute hilarity of our own Lesa Wilcox Postell; and the visits to the Society office by so many of our members from so far away. But regardless of where you live, may you be excited enough about JCGS to be back next year, bringing a friend or a cousin into JCGS. We wish you the happiest of holidays, and for the believers, may we continue to follow and reflect the Light from that incomparable Gift to us from 2000 years ago. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! At the Society's October meeting, Ansley Wegner from the State Archives speaker gave a very unusual - and fascinating - program on the North Carolina Civil War amputee program, which provided prostheses and such. Her only example from Jackson County was A.M. Dills. Here he is, folks, Alfred Marion Dills with his granddaughter Ethel May Dills, fall 1920. Many thanks to JCGS member Denise Jenkins Haney and her cousin Carol Taylor for this photo. AM. was Denise's great - great grandfather. The following reflects Rick Frizzell's ongoing interest'in relatives who "went west," not always by choice. Read his introduction to this article, which will explain his interest, give certain appropriate credits, and bring us to a fascinating historical account] In the early 1990's", my search for James Harrison Frizzell led me to Huerfano County, Colorado. An article in the May-June 1994 issue of Journeys Through Jackson details this search and my conclusions at that date. I have continued to search for information on James and his family. In the summer of 1997, during a trip to the North Carolina State Archives, I found information which suggested that James had killed his brother-in-law, A.C. Buchanan.. This agreed with our family tradition that he had "shot a Mr. Buchanan." He and his family had fled to Colorado under the assumed name of Gribble. This change of identity was confirmed in March of 1998 by Marian Pickens, widow of James's grandson Thomas Pickens. Mrs. Pickens confirmed that James and A.C. had quarreled over the Buchanan estate following the death of George Buchanan, who was A.C.'s father and James's father-in-law. To this day, James's descendants are aware of both James's alias and the reason for it. This material is covered in an article on the family in The Heritage of Jackson County, Volume II. My correspondence and conversations with Mrs. Pickens confirmed what had happened, why and how, but did not explain why James's uncle Ezekiel Gribble was already Uving in Colorado. As the "GenWeb" county sites became available online, I followed the development of the Huerfano County site. Recently an article contributed by Lonnie Dockery<was posted here. Entitled "The History of the Georgia Colony," this article was a reprint of a history by Benton Canon, who died in 1927. The article was transcribed by Nancy Christofferson in 1997, and the Huerfano County website coordinator, Karen Mitchell, has graciously given us permission to use the material in the article here. We quote and excerpt from the original article. Please read the entire article at the Huerfano County Gen Web site. I guarantee it to be a tale of great interest and adventure. The History of the Georgia Colony By Benton Canon The history of the pioneer colony \vhich moved from the state of Georgia to Huerfano County, Colorado, in the early days, is a thrilling story which dates back to the boyhood days of William Green Russell and Joseph Decatur Patterson. These two men were boyhood chums, and set sluice boxes and washed the golden sands of their native state together before the Centennial state of Colorado had been staked out, or its name written on the page of history. Joseph Decatur Patterson, known from boyhood as Kate Patterson, had heard glowing accounts of the Pikes Peak country in the Rocky Mountains from Green Russell, who had trekked over the old Santa Fe trail and across the Rocky'Mountains to the California gold excitement in 1849. 175 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2000 . ..Russell prospected the Pikes Peak country as he went through to California in 1849, and also in 1852 on his way back home. ^J . ..In 1858 and 1859 Kate Patterson accompanied Green Russell on his mining expedition to the Pikes Peak country. In 1858 they brought with them from the state of Georgia a small colony of Cherokee miners, composed of about thirty men who had learned the placer mining business in their native state. .. .In 1859 thrilling reports of the discovery of gold in the Pikes Peak country were circulated far and wide, and mining men from all quarters of the world began to come in to these new gold diggings. In that year Green Russell and Kate Patterson brought another colony of about two hundred experienced mining men from Georgia. .. .In 1860, while the Georgia boys were busy working their claims and sacking their gold dust, they heard rumors of war between the north and south. In 1861, President Lincoln called for an army of seventy five thousand soldiers to fight the southern states.. .Members of the Georgia colony began to lay down their shovels.. .clean up their sluice boxes, and quietly prepare for a journey back to their native state, to help their folks at home fight the battles of their country. .. .They held frequent meetings during the winter of 1861-1862, and one night Green Russell and Kate Patterson, with their group of miners, started back to their Georgia home to enlist in the southern army. Early in the fall of 1862, they trekked over the old emigrant trail to Pueblo, and camped, under the big cottonwoods on the south bank of the Arkansas River. Here they met a number of men to whom they explained, in a quiet way, the object of their expedition, making some valuable additions to their company. The next camping place was at the Hicklin Ranch on Greenhorn Creek, which was in what was then Huerfano County. Zan Hicklin was a noted character in the early days of Colorado. He was a friend of Green Russell and Kate Patterson. He was also a "dyed in the wool" Missoure(sic) Democrat, and his sympathy was with the South. .. .When these pioneer miners saw the corn that was grown on the Hicklin ranch in the fall of 1862, they were amazed and favorably impressed with Huerfano County. Late in the fall of 1862, the objects of this expedition leaked out, and the military forces at Denver were ordered to pursue Patterson (,) Russell and their followers, overhaul them and march back to Fort Union, New Mwxico, to be held there as prisoners of war. In the meantime they had been advised of the Government's action, and at once the company was put under "whip and spur," along down the old Pecos Trail, which was leading this unfortunate caravan... [Ed. An account of the death of Joshua Potts follows here.] .. .During this trouble, a detachment of Government troops arrived on the scene and arrested all members of the company. As soon as the sick were' able to travel, they were all marched back to Fort Union, and held mere as prisoners of war. .. .Early in the spring of 1863, the prisoners were released on parole, and allowed to go their way. Green Russell, his two brothers, and James H. Pierce, his cousin, returned to Denver. .. .While in Fort Union, (Patterson) met many noted men of the Rocky Mountain country. Among them were Ceran St Vrain, Richens L. Wooten, Lucian B. Maxwell, Kit Carson, Governor A.C. Hunt, Governor Gilpin and others who used their influence in having the Georgians released. St. Vrain urged Mr. Patterson to take his little colony and settle in the Huerfano valley. After mature deliberation, he concluded to go back to Huerfano County and settle there. [Ed. Patterson would marry Martha Potts, oldest of the orphaned Potts children.] Ky KJ 176 Journeys Through'Jackson November - December 2000 In 1865, after the Civil War had ended, Kate Patterson began to receive letters of enquiry ^ / from his relatives and friends in Georgia, concerning the western country. In 1869, he arranged with his father, Samuel Patterson Sr. and his cousin James L.Patterson Jr. to guide a trip to southern Colorado and investigate the country, with a view of moving a colony of home seekers from Georgia to Huerfano County. .. .A number of Georgians settled here in 1869; others came in 1870 and 1871. There were about five hundred newcomers from Georgia and the Carolinas, most of the emigrants bringing their families. Nearly all of them located in the Cuchara and Huerfano valleys. .. .This movement from the South to Huerfano County lasted for years after 1871. The Pattersons are gratefully remembered, for they were public benefactors. The arrival of these Southerners added hundreds to the population of our county in the early seventies; they were a good class of people - industrious and thrifty. The Georgia colonists, as they were called, are to be found in many neighborhoods of this county. In this issue, we conclude this work of Traci Henderson Clark.] Conclusion From census records, park commission reports, company reports, church records, and personal interviews, the community of the Oconalufty valley has been more clearly defined. It has met all socio-economic demands to be declared a viable community. The region had been settled since the beginning of the 1800's, and residents were socially bound together by the early establishment of churches and schools. These centers continued to provide opportunities for social interaction until closedby the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As shown by the Agricultural Schedukjpf the 1850 Census, inhabitants of the Oconalufty valley had produced prosperous farms within two, generations of the valley's settlement The 1910 Census, as well as later park documents, church records, and personal interviews, confirmed that the descendants of the early settlers still lived in and gained their livelihood from the valley. Statistics taken from the 1910 Swain County Census also suggest that the residents were a literate people who believed in the importance of education.84 By the time modern technology and economic prosperity, i.e. the entrance of commercial logging/lumber companies, had reached.Lufty, the fate of -the valley was sealed. As early as the 1880's, proposals to create a national park in the Smokies were already being presented. World War I postponed the inevitable; but, in 1926, Coolidge decided the valley's final destiny with one signature. Even as Prosperity knocked at their front doors, the need to preserve a portion of the Appalachian wilderness for future generations pushed the Lufty residents from the valley, Political and legal maneuverings were used to dismantle this viable, even growing, community. During the interview with Bessie,Beck, a former resident of the valley, she spoke of the park pressing the people to leave their homes within the park boundaries in the early 1930's. The park pushed us to leave, and my husband, Til, had just about The only truck around. He ha\iled tilings for his Uncle George to And from the store. And I reckon Til must have moved most of Our families out of the park, and a lot of others, too. I don't know How they would have gotten their things moved out otherwise.. *S S When another former resident was asked if she disliked the park because-she and her family were forced to move, Helen Gass Thompson replied that she missed Ravensford: I wish I could go back and live-there again, but it wouldn't be the same. I reckon the people who visit the park enjoy the mountains. ( But it's almost like we were never there. There isn't anything left v - / of Ravensford and there is a campground at Smokemont.86 187 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2000 Most of the remnants of the community that once existed within the park boundaries have slowly faded away. There are a few scattered foundations of houses and there are many old roads used by the park rangers, but these are not seen by the casual visitor who only drives through the park. Ravensford exists only in the memories of past residents such as Helen Gass Thompson and Marilyn MacDonald Hipps. There are pictures that can remind us of how different areas looked and how the buildings and people looked. But, with each day, we are closer to losing our remaining primary sources of information. If the history of the Oconalufty valley is to be preserved, it must be done before the memories of the people who once inhabited the area fade into the mist that gave the Smoky Mountains their name.
