From the Editor We finish another year in the Society with the usual mixture of emotions... anticipation for the coming year, satisfaction over many accomplishments, and sadness for those who passed away from us in the year. With all of the hype, one would think that the advent of the year 2000 would be the greatest event - or the most apocalyptic - ever recorded. We shall just have to wait and see. We take enormous pride in the success of Rick Frizzell and his Docket Book, and offer him another congratulations on a job not just done well, but done in exemplary fashion. And we remember with warmth the accomplishments of several Society members who are no longer with us, while at the same time giving thanks for having known them and believing that they are now in a Place where there are no questions about genealogy, just joyous answers. The progress on the Heritage Book has not met expectations, so we encourage everyone to work on stories for submission. This is a major undertaking, and everyone must work hard to ensure its success. In this issue, read and enjoy Helen Wood and Ruth Shuler's account of the Mills family, take yourself back in time to a CivU War camp and experience with the Sutton boys what went on there, and see the usual abstracts of county records. As is customary, we pass along a complete membership list in this issue, along with the names that the members research. Use this to write, or call, or e-mail, that cousin you didn't know and share this wonderful pastime together. Again this year, the Society broke all membership records. A big thanks to everyone, and a reminder to pay dues for 2000 and bring along a friend too. Happy New Year! Following are the remarks made by Beverly Tetterton, NCGS 1st Vice President. "The Award for Excellence in Publishing [for a single abstract of original North Carolina records] goes to Rick Frizzell and the Jackson County Genealogical Society for their publication, Docket Book, Jackson County Superior Court, 1866-1896'. From cases regarding' 'Disturbing Religious Congregations' to 'Carrying Concealed Weapons' this abstract presents an , heretofore, infrequently used source for understanding family history and presents,an interesting view of local history in the latter part of the last century. It will surely be used by scholars interested in the social and criminal history of the period. The volume covers the dockets for the first thirty years of the Superior Court of Jackson County. The material includes the date, the defendant, the crime, and, in some instances, the outcome of the trial. An important component of this book is the listing of bastardy cases which were not filed as a separate unit in Jackson County. The appendices provide definitions that clarify the offenses cited and the legal terms in use more than a century ago and the every-name index makes the volume easy to use." H a p p y N e w Y e a r t o A l l J C G S M e m b e r s ! 175 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 A T r i b u t e t o D a n i e l D e i t z When Daniel Deitz was called home to God on November 27, the Jackson County Genealogical Society lost the man who was possibly its most unique member. I need not speak of his loyalty and devotion to this Society; all of you know it well. I need not speak of his open friendliness nor his eager willingness to share his genealogical knowledge; again, you well know those things. I do want to speak about Daniel Deitz, the man, and of some gifts he possessed in abundance and graciously shared with his fellow man. " Daniel did not rely as much upon the written word as most of us when he compiled genealogical data. His strength in genealogy came from the most remarkable memory I have ever encountered. His ability to recall events and facts came complete with date, day of the week, and even the hour at which he heard about or witnessed whatever subject was under discussion. If one needed a fact from Daniel about genealogy, he could, in his slow and thoughtful manner, simply recite the entire lineage of one. of his family lines. Daniel discovered that my husband shared his Deitz line, and since we were woefully ignorant of that family and short of time to listen, Daniel wrote a report of his knowledge for us. We have over one hundred pages of Deitz family information - thanks to the generosity of a man who wished to be of help. He had an encyclopedic amount of information in his memory and was delighted if he were able to help in someone else's search for family connections. Daniel Deitz was not only a unique genealogist; he was also an individual with great kindness and tolerance for his fellow man. He possessed infinite patience, never more evident than when he was in the company of children or the elderly. He loved children and his gentle care of them and willingness to amuse them with games and play was one of his most endearing traits. Daniel had great respect for the elderly and liked to visit and listen well to their stories. He used his great physical strength before his illness to assist others less able, even when the work was tiring, dirty, and mostly disagreeable. Daniel was slow to anger, loved to attend family reunions, and had a grand appreciation for good food in plentiful quantities. This society, and this community, will miss Daniel Deitz. Daniel may have been most lovable because he had an innocence and lack of guile that served to separate him from so much that is malicious and ugly in our world. The plain and simple goodness which characterized his life are too seldom seen today. For those of us who believe that as the recipients of God's grace, we are then to channel it outward to our fellow creatures, it would be difficult to find a better role model than Daniel Deitz. For Daniel, who loved to sing the hymns that expressed his faith, I wish you Godspeed and may you harmonize with the angels. The following is submitted by JCGS members Helen Wood and Ruth Shuler. As both would work on this family, lines would intersect, new information would come to light, miracles would happen., .in short, the work of genealogists. We mist mat you will find it fascinating reading.] Several members of the Jackson County Genealogical Society work on their individual lines of descent from the Mills family, but no one has, as far as we know, tried to compile the information into one document In this article, therefore, we will try to reconcile known, verified data, several "preponderance of evidence" theories, arid some oral family history to present a unified account of a family important in ttie Scotts Creek area of Jackson County. A complicating factor in working on these families is their habit of naming daughters Mary and Ruth and sons David and Thomas, so we have searched diligently and compared much data in trying to determine which child"bel6nged to which family. We hope our conclusions are correct, and we invite conversation with other researchers to clarify any discrepancies. To construct the framework within which this article, evolved, the various threads of the research in progress have been studied. Kirk Stephens and John Siekierski work on the Lucius Wilburn Mills line. Brian McMahan works on the Gunter line that came out of the Mills family, as does Bruce Jones with the Henry family. Roy Shuler has^ong sought information on the Smith Mills family, and Lloyd Mills researches the William-Pinkerton Mills line. The catalyst for this unified document was provided when Helen Wood and grandson Brian began searching for. Oscar Wood's grandmother, and Ruth Shuler became, interested in sorting out the entire Mills family. Various pieces of information from all trlese JCGS members have been combined to fojm an overall picture of this large, complicated Mills family. The starting point for this article was the 1850 Haywood County census which lists a number of families with the Mills name in the Jackson County community known as Willets. The patriarch was Thomas, 75 years old, and his wife Mary, 64 years old. Living with them were their daughter Tempy and her son Davie Tom. In adjacent households were the A.W. Gunter family, a younger Thomas Mills family, the Smith Mills family, the Richard Mills family, and by the 1860 Jackson County census, the David Mills and Reuben Mills families. Based on census data, the family appears to have been composed* of Thomas (b. 1775) and Mary (1786), and their children William David (1812), Reuben S[amuel?J (1814), Smith (1817), Temperance (1820), Mary (1823), Thomas (1828), and Richard (1830). While there is no document stating that Thomas and Mary were the parents of these children, the "preponderance of evidence" theory would seem to apply. Thomas Mills and family are listed in the 1840 Haywood census, but their whereabouts prior to that time were not known until two pieces of information, an obituary and an enlistment record, came to light, showing Montgomery County NC. Exactly when they left Montgomery County and whether they lived in other locations before settling in Haywood County have not yet been determined. Based on the marriage records of David and Reuben, they were in Haywood County by 1837. David and Reuben and their .families were not in the 1840 or 1850 Haywood census, but their older children's birthplaces in later censuses are shown as Tennessee. A specific location there awaits further research. 179 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 Examination of Haywood and Jackson County official records brought forth the following statistics: David Mills married Malinda Elliott 29 July 1837. Reuben Mills married her sisfer Amelia Ann Elliott 26 Oct 1839s (The Elliott sisters, bom in Tennessee, were daughters of Jason and Rebecca Harris Elliott, who were married in Blount Co TN 7 Oct 1820.) Mary Mills married Andrew Williamson Gunter 28 Aug 1841. Thomas Mills married Mary Elmina Pannell 24 Jan 1850. Temperance Mills married John Stanford 11 Aug 1852. -No marriage record has been found for Smith Mills, and no information other than that shown in the 1850 census has been located on Richard Mills, except that his marriage to Aquilla Roberts appears in Monroe CO TN on 12 Oct 1848. When the elder Thomas Mills and his wife Mary died and where they are buried are not yet known, but they do not appear in the 1860 Jackson County census. Ky The following paragraphs list the children of Thomas and Mary, and spouses if known. Birth dates, based on census records in most instances, may not be exact. William David and Malinda Elliott Mills had at least thirteen children: Polly (Mary A.), 1840, married Joseph Arrington and James Henry; Rutha, 1845, married Davie Tom Mills; Joseph K„ 1846, married Martha Crawford; James M., 1848, married Rachel Crawford, sister to Martha; Rebecca, 1850, never married; Eliza M., 1852, married Samuel N. Wood; Lucius Wilburn, 1855, married Nancy Brooks and Melanie Henry; Miley (Millie) Melvina, 1856, married Andrew Jackson Wood; Cynthia Candis, 1858, married Granville A. Melton; a son listed as J., 1859, evidently died, since no other record has been found; Sarah Jane, 1861, married W.T. "Bud" Gunter; Samuel Beauregard, 1863, married Julia N. Wood; Isabella (Ibby), 1865, became the third wife of William Towers Fisher. A Jackson County deed (Book 44, p. 286) recorded in 1907 detailed the purchase by Joseph K. Mills of the property owned by his father David, and listed his siblings (except two) and their spouses. Miley Melvina Wood was not shown and had evidently died, since names were Usted for her heirs with her husband as guardian. Neither was Eliza Wood listed, but no reason was given for her exclusion. U Ky 180 M e l i n d a E l l i o t t M i l ls Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 Reuben and Amelia Mills had five known children: Isaac Jefferson, 1841, married Jane Wyatt and Syntha Wood; Rebecca A., 1843, married Thomas Clem Wood; William Pinkerton, 1845, married Martha Clayton and Nicey B. Conner; Nancy Angeline, 1848, married William C. Parris; Thaddius, 1861, married Artie Miller. Smith Mills married Lucinda Sutherland, born in GA, and a woman referred to in the 1860 census only as "R" Smith was the father of five.sons: James, 1845, may have married Jane Morrow in Macon County; Samuel Smith, 1847, married Sarah" Dorsey and Mary Magdaline Henson Crawford; Zachary Taylor, 1848, married Rebecca Norris and Elizabeth Smith; Daniel Allen, 1851, married Martha Rebecca Sparks, born in Nashville, TN; William Thomas, 1855, married Sarah Elizabeth Pruett and Jane Abigail Watkins. Temperance (Tempy) Mills already had a son, Davie Tom, when she married John Stanford. Evidently he was her only child. Davie Tom would later marry his first cousin Rutha, daughter of David and Melinda Mills. Andrew Williamson, and .Mary Mills Gunter had seven known children: W.T. "Bud," 1844, who would marry his first cousin Sarah Jane Mills, daughter of David and Melinda; Nancy J., 1845, the second wife of William Towers Fisher; John A., 1849, no further record found; Harriet E., 1850, married Jesse R McKay; Margaret M., 1852, married John B. Queen; Mary A.> 1854; and Darcus M., 1856, married Samuel Marion Gunter. A Jackson County marriage record shows Mary marrying'J.R McKay on 23 Aug 1870, but census records bear out the family contention that Harriet, not Mary", was Mrs. McKay. Thomas Mills married Mary Elmina Pannell, born in SC, and they had at 'least four children: Reuben, 1857, married Jane Woodruff; David C, 1864; Daniel, 1867; and Sarah E., 1878,- married Cling Browning. With the above information in place, let us look in greater depth at two segments of this Mills family that provide some interesting genealogical finds and take us back to our title: In Search of a Grandparent. Helen Wood's husband, Oscar, is in poor health. He told Helen that his grandmother Wood had died young, and all he knew of her was that she was an Arrington whose mother had later married a Henry. Armed with that scant information, and intended as a gift for Oscar, Helen and grandson Brian Wood began their search. Land records in Jackson County (Book 13, p. 452) show Polly Henry transferring the land owned by her deceased husband, Joseph Arrington, to Michael Wood and William Bell Henry. We presume that this is the same Joseph Arrington listed in the home of Thomas and Sebitha Bell Arrington in the 1850 Haywood County census. Joseph served the Confederacy in Co. H, 62nd NC Troops, and was imprisoned at Camp Douglas, Illinois, where he died in 1864. Although no marriage record has been found, the '1870 Jackson County census listed James Henry and wife Mary A., with children Marg. J., 10, William B., 3, and Isabella, 3 (twins), The 1880 census was more specific: Margaret, William, and Isabella were listed as James Henry's stepchildren. Margaret Arrington married Michael B. Wood on 10 Oct 1885 in Jackson County. While no genealogist wants to find-unpleasant information, histoey-cannot be changed. Family oral history had indicated that William'Bell Henry was illegitimate. There is an 1870 court case in Jackson County (Polly Henry and the State vs*. James Crawford: bastardy) with an acknowledgment of guilt by the defendant. William Bell Henry married Mariah Parris, and they 181 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 and their family lived in the Addie area. He is buried at Old Field Cemetery, and beside him is James Crawford; here is a''preponderance of evidence" theory that appears to be true. Whether \y James Henry formally adopted William Bell is not clear, but William and his descendants bore the name Henry and were well-respected members of their community. We assume that William Bell Henry and his natural father James Crawford had an amicable relationship, since they are buried side by side. After the 1880 census Isabella Arrington or Henry did not appear in any official records and we assumed that she had died. Helen made arrangements to review the record books of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, and there we found several references to Isabell. At the time Isabell joined the church, she was listed as Isabell Arrington. In another place she was called Isabell Henry, and there was an obituary for Isabell Henry, daughter of Mary Henry. Isabell died in November, 1882, at the age of 16. The obituary mentioned Isabell's "twin brother," who would have been William Bell Henry. In another part of the church minutes there was a reference to "Mary Henry formerly Mary Arrington," which authenticated the fact that Mary Mills Arrington was Mary "Polly" Henry. (An interesting note here is that after Polly Henry's death in 1908, James Henry married Mary Mills Pannell, daughter of Davie Tom and Rutha Mills Mills, and therefore Polly's niece.) Family tradition in the Wood family held that Margaret had been taken to the state hospital at Morganton and had died there. Helen and Brian traveled to Morganton and found Margaret's grave, along with documentation of her identity and verification of her death date in 1895. When Polly Henry was confirmed as the daughter of David and Melinda Mills, Helen was able to document not only Oscar's grandmother, Margaret Arrington Wood, but she was able to add three more generations: Mary Mills Arrington Henry, Melinda Elliott Mills, and Mary Mills. Ky Helen believes that she has been blessed and wonderfully fortunate in putting together the story of Oscar's paternal grandmothers and obtaining the documentation to support her premises. In so doing, she has given Oscar a priceless gift.. .knowledge of four grandmothers! In our other segment, Roy Shuler had very little information on his great-greatgrandfather Smith Mills. Smith died in 1862 as a relatively young man, and his family became separated. The two oldest boys, James and Samuel Smith, were of an age to be self-sufficient, but Zachary and William Thomas became wards of the court and were bound out, Zach as a 14- year-old and W.T. only nine. The brother Daniel Allen, born between these two, may also have been bound out, but no such record has been located. W.T., who would later be known as "Steke" Mills, was living with his aunt Tempy Stanford when the 1870 Jackson County census was taken. Additional research has turned up the fact that Smith Mills served in the Mexican War. He enlisted in Co. A of the NC Volunteers on 18 Mar 1847, and the muster roster, on file in the North Carolina state archives, described him: "Smith Mills, age 27, 5'9-l/2", dark complexion, hazl eyes, dark hair, born Mongory Co., enlisted 18 Mar 1847 at Waynsville, North Carolina, by Lt. Col. Fagg." Note that one of his sons carried the name "Zachary Taylor Mills," obviously in honor of General Zachary Taylor. One wonders if Smith's death in 1862 were the result of a war injury; we assume he is buried in the Love Cemetery, although there is no marked grave. A query in the "Genealogical Helper" and a subsequent phone call found descendants of Daniel Allen Mills. He and Martha moved westward in the early 1900's and are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, Brooks, Oregon. When that piece of information came to light, only James of Ky the five brothers is unaccounted for. It is possible that he lived in Cherokee County NC. 182 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 William Thomas "Steke" Mills, son of Smith Mills and Lucinda Sutherland (text continued) Some references there appear to lead back to Jackson County, but he has not yet been located. Samuel Smith and Zachary Taylor Mills are most likely buried in the Love Cemetery, although their graves are not marked. Samuel's death certificate indicates that he was buried at Willets, where the Love Cemetery is located, and Zachary's obituary in the Mount Pleasant church records shows that he lived in the same community. William Thomas Mills is buried in the Phillipsville Cemetery near Canton in Haywood County. The search is ongoing for the identity of Smith Mills' second wife. The 1860 census for Jackson County shows her only as R. Mills, age 25. In court records her name appears as "Ruthy," but her maiden name has not yet surfaced, nor do we know what happened to her after Smith's death. C Based on this research, Roy's knowledge of his Mills family line has been greatly enhanced, and contact has been established with several previously unknown cousins. He has also talked with one cousin whom he has" not seen in more than fifty years. 183 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 The early Mills family lived in the Willets area, and there are numerous tombstones of family members in the Love and Cogdill - Henry cemeteries. We are almost certain that unmarked graves of other family members are also in these cemeteries. An obituary for Reuben Mills in the Mount Pleasant church records lists his birthplace as Montgomery County, reinforcing the knowledge of where the family lived at one time. There are also obituaries for Zachary T. Mills, Thomas Mills and his wife Mary Elmina, and Melinda Elliott Mills in these church records, but only Melinda has a grave marker, that in the Love Cemetery. To recapitulate, while there is no documentation that Thomas and Mary Mills were the progenitors of this large family, the fact that they all lived in adjacent households bears out the "preponderance of evidence" theory. There is no birth certificate stating that James Crawford was the father of William Bell and Isabell Henry, but the same theory would hold that premise to be true. Oscar Wood now knows not only who his grandmother was, but that she was buried in Morganton in a beautiful cemetery that is well-maintained. He also three more generations of grandmothers. Roy Shuler can now claim descendancy from a veteran of the Mexican War and knows names and locations for many more of his Mills cousins. A careful sifting of details contained in death certificates, delayed birth certificates, the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church records, and land and equity records has resulted in the complete names and relationships of many of the Mills families. The oral history of some of the lines as related by surviving members of the various families has been authenticated, and it is with a great deal of pleasure that we present to the Society our findings on a family whose descendants now number in the thousands. We hope that other Mills researchers will profit from this article. (Helen M. Wood and Ruth C. Shuler) S u b m i t y o u r H e r i t a g e B o o k a r t i c l e s t o d a y . June 5,1861 Dear Father an Mother an Brother an Sister I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that we are all well at this time, and hoping when these lines come to hand they will find you all well. Silas is in good heart. We was mustered into service this morning for twelve months. We have had a heap of fun since we left Jackson. We road about two hundred miles on the old iron horse. The ladies cheers us very much on the way. They said hurrah for the Jackson boys as we go to Raleigh. Every day we saw the proper old glory Washington has fought for our freedom, and we will fight for freedom as long as we live, for old North Caroliner. Tell all of my friends howdy for me, especially the ladies. Tell them that I will come back to Jackson if I live, and I don't think the Yankee will ever kill me. The ladies come out every day to see us and serenade around the camp. The people has treated us with great respect. I want you to rit to me as soon as you receive this letter and-tell me all the news about Jackson. S61 must come to a close. Yours trulyson. James Sutton John Sutton [Ed. Added to the above letter] I now drop you a few lines to let you know when we draw our money. We draw 10 dollar on Saturday, and we will send you some if we can. The three, 30 dollar. Camp Lilly Raleigh, N.C. June 12,1861 Dear Father This evening Mr. Boone is making preparation to leave in the morning for Webster, and thinking that you would be glad to hear from us, I haste to write to you. We have all been well since we left and keep in fine spirits. Everyday we receive the news from Virginia. They have had several fights there and we have been successful in every conflict. Tonight we received the news of a fight at Bethel Church, Va. Capt. McDowell Company from Asheville was in the engagement. We were one thousand strong and the Yankees were four thousand. We completely routed them, killing two or three hundred and taking many prisoners, with the loss of only one man and seven wounded. Lee Hardy of Asheville had a son in the fight and has sent his father a gun taken from the enemy, so the Virginia papers state. We belong to the Sixth regiment of the N.C. Volunteers. We have not elected our field officers yet, but expect to do so in a few days. When we have the regiment fully organized, I expect we will go to Virginia. I shall write to you 189 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 every week or two - giving you the news of the various fights as they occur. Raleigh is a very pleasant place and I believe as healthy as any portion of Jackson. The water is not so cold as ours >^y in Jackson, but equally as pure and good. You can give all my friends my best respect, and tell them when peace is made and the Lincolnites are driven from our soil, they may expect to see John Sutton and not before, unless something happens which I can't derive. I am very well pleased with camp life, and think that my health will be improved instead of impaired by the campaign. You can direct your letters to the care of Capt. Coleman - Raleigh, N.C. I would be glad to hear from you often. When you write - give me all the news for nothing affords more pleasure to me than to hear from my relatives and friends at home. Hoping to hear from you soon and that God will protect and give you good health. I subscribe myself your dutiful son. John Sutton Raleigh, N.C. June 22nd, 1861 Dear Father an Mother an Brother an Sister It is with pleasure I drop the few lines to you to let you know that we are all well at this time, and hoping that the few lines may find you enjoying the same life blessing. We leave here next Friday to Yorktown, Virginia, I think. That place will be mad about the fourth of July, but if it tain't, hit will be mad one way. The Southern boys will fight till they die for the state of old Caroliner. We heard the other day they had one battle. The Southern boys runed them like wild turkey. They kill a large number of the black republicans an not one of our boys was hurt. I •*—' think that old master is won over. Said they is about twelve hundred soldiers going to leave with us when we leave, an they are coming in every day by thousand. I would like to hear from you all. I thought some of my friend would rit to me before now. James an Silas has been inquiring very much every mail to hear from you all, but they are very well satisfied. They are in good spirits an wants to go on. I want you to rit to me an give me all the news about Jackson. If you can't rit yourself, git some friend to rit for you. We sent you ten dollar by Mr. H.A. Boone. He promise us to send it to you. I want you to see about hit. I got nine dollar stole from me, but I can git as much money as I want. I have made about ten dollar since I left by cutting hair. Our Captain is a very fine man. He let me have money when I want hit and the boys has money when they want hit. When you rit to me, direct your letter in the care of Captain A. Coleman and hit will be sent to me. Joseph Sutton an James Turpin, Allen Turpin an John Messer are all well at this time. So yours truly sons John Sutton James Sutton Silas Sutton I am in a hurry I had to come to a close I couldn't rit you all the news in a week Ky 190 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 Raleigh June the 27,1861 Dear Father It is with pleasure sat myself to rit you a few lines to let .you know we are all in good spirits at this time, an hoping the few .lines-may find you enjoying the same like health. Wc received your letter the 26 of June, which gives us much satisfaction to hear from you all being well. Coot an James are both well and in good spirits. We are still in Raleigh yet an don't know when we will leave-here. I received a letter from Mr. L.M. Dillard yesterday, an he told me he was a candidate for Supreme Court clerk; an I want you an the boys to do all you can for him. He is a volunteer, an alles stick to a volunteer. And tell all of your friends to spread their wing and crow for L.M. Dillard. I Jiaven't heard anything about the other one. A turnen out volunteer, I think. He is a feared to face the musket. We heard we could vote in the election. I don't think he would lose ten votes in our camps. We are for a man to fight for the soul of old Caroliner. You must not think I am trying to influence you to vote. » ., We are very much confused about the gun.. They all march up to town and they present the old musket to them and they refuse to take, the old musket, an the summon a guard to make the boys take them an they like to bin a war in Raleigh.- The boys all walk off an they howled like Indian. The gun the got is rifle musket. Theywill shoot about three hundred yards. They are very fine gun. You must rit to mean give me all the news about Jackson, and tell all our friend howdy for us. We will leave here purty quick to some point in Virginia.. When you rit, if we are gone, the letter will be sent to us at any poiht.in Virginia. We have all received our gun today. I have nothing of much importance to rit. We see a very happy time in Raleigh. The water is very good here. A heap of the boys say the water hain" like it is in Jackson. It git very hot. They say they wish they were in Jackson to drink one sup of old water, but we can git ice water here. Hit make the water very cold. You must excuse my bad ritting. for I ain" got time to rit as I want to. We are busy a drillen all the time. An also give Marv Engel and his family my best respect for me and all the rest of my friend, and be certain to rit to me how Granny Sutton and Granny Messer are getting along. And tell Granny Messer I would like to went to see her before I left, but I had so many thing to study about I could not go. I hope I will come back to see you all before I die. And James and Coot says give all-the gals the best respect for them. And they say if they live to come back, they will kiss their sweet lips a heap, but they want to git one Yankess before the come back. Your truly son John Sutton Tell Delph howdy for us and we will bring her a present when we come back. Raleigh July the 5i 1861 Brother Sol an Henry A'word to you both. You must dothe best you can and be good boys. Sol, I sent my likeness and James & Silas to you by Mr. Allen Fisher. You must take them home an let them all see them; and all of our friends. An also, I had mine taken in Asheville an sent hit by Bart Raby, and I never hear whether you got thent x>r not. When I get to Virginia, I will rit to you an you must rit to me an let me know whether you got them or not. We will leave here July the 6, and no more at this time. Your truly brother John Sutton 191 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 Richmond, Virginia July the 7*, 1861 ^y Dear Father I now sat myself to rit a few lines to let you know that we are all well at present, and hoping the few lines may find you all well. We have left Raleigh and now at Richmond, Virginia, about two .hundred miles farther. We are traveling on toward the Yankee very far. We don't know when we will leave here, but since I have bin a riting the few lines, the President has order the Colonel to first go to western part of Virginia, about two hundred miles farther in the mountain part of Virginia. We are fixing for fighting as fast as we can. You may expect to hear, the next time you hear from us, we will be in a battle. We will do the best we can for them. I will rit to you when I stop, and let you have all the news. James and Silas are both in good spirits at this time. You may think they have sawed a great deal since they have left home. They have saw the old steamboat at Petersburg, Virginia. John Messer says to tell his folks that he is well and ready for the Yankee. For you all to do the best you can and I will do the same and also Joseph Sutton says tell all his friends he is well and in good spirits and ready to fight in with the Yankee at any time. I will say to you all that I do believe that Richmond, Virginia is the finest place I ever saw except Webster. Hit is the capital of Virginia. You may think that hit made a heap of the mountain boys open their eyes. You may think there are many soldiers here. There are tens of thousands. We have got twenty-five thousand Yankees surrounded at Chester and they is eighteen thousand of us. We are expecting that fight to come off everyday. I am getting tard of riting, they said here yesterday that there was a battle fought at Yorktown. They was five thousand Yankee kill and one thousand of our men kill. I could rit to you one whole day and give you strange news. But you need not rit to me anymore until I rit to you again and let you know where we are. We are a many mile from you now. Ky Your truly son John Sutton A word more to you. They say in Richmond, Virginia that the sixth regiment is the best regiment ever was in Richmond, Virginia. It is very sickley here, bout four or five die here every day but nothing stiring so many people. About fifty women was at our camp last night. Some as purty as . After the war I am coming back here to git me a wife. Most purty women in Virginia I ever saw. '••'•' i • i • in . i Monterey, Highland Co. Va. July 17*, 1861 Dear Father I once more embrace the opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that myself and brothers are well. Hoping this may find you are enjoying the same blessing. We are on the borders now of the Yankee land. We are about 50 miles from the place where they have been fighting, and while I am writing this letter, the General Garnett's calvery has come in, bringing in a Yankee with them. And they inform us that our side did not lose any or killed, but several wounded. Our men killed a great many of the enemy - our general took all advantages & saved his men. It was reported that Gen. Garnett was killed, but it is false. We will no doubt have a very hard battle this week or next. If so, the Jackson boys are are ready and are biting their lips and gritting their teeth like horses waiting for a charge. There is not much sickness in our army. We have got up in the mountains, and it is as cold here as it is in Hamburg or Cashiers \ ^ Valley. We almost freeze at night. Water is good & we feel like we were in old Jackson once 192 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 more, but miss our old friends. There are some four thousand soldiers stationed at this place, and some six or seven thousand to be here this week.' I will-write you next week all the particulars. Your son John Sutton Dear Father A word more to you. I will .state to about how far it is from home. We have come about one thousand miles since we left Jackson. We will be in a battle before a week. The Colonel Lee has been picking out the battle ground. The last battle, we will kill about nine hundred of the Yankee, and they kill about sixty of our Southern. Me, James, and Silas are about well, and in good spirits at this time, an seems to be eager to fight the Yankee. The boys has got to see the Yankee. The have got fourteen or fifteen prisoners here. The haven't decided yet what they will do with them yet. There is one old man about seventy, years old that led the enemy around our men. They are going to hang the old chap and are going to shoot some of them certain. And the rest will be in the penitentiary, supposed. Jim says to tell you he is well and doing very well. I said it was all false about General Garnett being dead, but it is true, for one of the captains come in a few minutes ago an says they are coming on with him. They fought three battles, and the second battle he was killed. We have, got in such a cold place that there has never been a fly or not a snake seen. You may write back if you choose.. Direct your letter to Monterey, Highland Co.,VA. ' , John Sutton * - GampEdray i Pocohantas Co. Va. i July 27*. 1861 My Dear Father This morning I avail myself of the preent opportunity of writing you a few lines, that you may know that we are all well at present Brother Jim, Silas, & myself & company generally have all enjoyed good health and got along finely together. We have no very official news to write except that we are now within forty miles of the enemy, and expect to advance in a few days and station ourselves close to their quarters. God only knows what will be the result, but we expect soon to have a fight with Gen. McClellan's forces on Cheat Mountain & when we do fight, we expect to give them the devil. Our boys are all in good spirits, and are anxious to get into a fight. Our regiment is now stationed ten miles above Huntersville in the mountains and in a pleasant country. The climate is about the same here as it is in our country, except that it is a little cooler. Leut. Lee is waiting here for reinforcements which he expects in a few days - two regiments I suppose will be here today, and others are coming on. So we expect shortly to have ten or fifteen thousand troops to join us which will make our forces strong enough to whip Gen. McClellan's army. I suppose by this time or before this letter reaches you, that you will have heard the news from Manassas Junction relative to the fight between Gen. Beauregard and Gen. Scott. The fight began last Sunday early in the morning & lasted until late in the evening. Gen. Beauregard defeated them. Killed 12,000 Yankees and took fifteen thousand prisoners & sixty pieces of artillery. Our boys was only twenty-five hundred killed & wounded. The last account we had was that General Beauregard intended to advance. I hope the time will come soon when the North will come to their senses and acknowledge our Southern independence & war & bloodshed will be put to an end. Jim & Silas sends their best love to you all & all their relations. 193 Journeys Through Jackson November-December 1999 Give my respects to all inquiring friends & accept to yourself the regard and esteem which every dutiful son owes to his parents - my best love to all the family. ^y John Sutton P.S. Dr. Love sends his best respects to you & family & all the Sutton connection. Camp Lee . Randolph Co. Va. Sept. 3rd, 1861 Dear Brother I seat myself this good morning to inform you that I am well at present - hoping these few lines will find you enjoying the same blessing. Silas is on the mend at this time. Brother James and Silas both taken down with the measles at once. It turned to the fever on them both, and they lay about three weeks and James died on the 27th of August. I had him agoing about and Dillard Love told me to take him to his tent as it was a better place, and some of the boys brought in water and he drank water all night and that thrive hirri back on. Brother James taken bad right at the start, and all the doctors could not save him. He had five doctors with him at once, but they could not save him. I sat up with him day and night for ten, and never slept a bit, only dosed a little sometimes. I done the best I could but we all have to die sometime sooner or later - prepared or unprepared. But I have no doubt but what James was prepared. The last word he said that he was going to heaven. That was one great consolation. The last word he said to me was go, go to bed and sleep. Then in a few minutes he sent for me to come back and the last word he said to me again was John, take good care of Silas. An Capt. Coleman sit by the bedside all night and the last words he said, he said something about Henry, but they could not tell what it \y was and then he said I wish I could see Sol. He never said anything about the rest - 1 would write more, but Capt. Coleman an Dock Love and Dillard Love all written about him. Silas is getting well very fast. We are looking everyday to have a fight. Our men has been in sight of them several times but have never fired on them yet. The picket guard and them had a little brush. They killed three of them and but one our men got hurt. We wounded some of their men, but we don't know how many. I think our force is strong enough for them and there is no danger but what we will whip them. I must bring my remarks to a close as my paper is coarse. Please write to me as soon as you get this letter and let me know how you are a doing. So nothing more but I remain your truly and affectionate brother. John Sutton A few words for Silas to Craton Brooks Dear Friend, I am not well - 1 am very weak though I think I will recover. After my respects to you, I want you to remember me and write to me and I will write as soon as I am able. I would like to see you very much if I could, but I cannot. Give my respects to all the friends and tell them all to write to me and be sure to write yourself some more, for I remain your friend until death. Silas Sutton {Ed.
