From the Editor Fall...and the most beautiful time in the mountains, which as we all know is the most beautiful place on earth. But our anticipation for fall this year is tempered with our concern for our neighbors in _J eastern North Carolina. We are hopeful that as the hurricane season passes, all of them will once again be able to be at home. For some thousands, the simple truth of it is that they have no homes now. We encourage everyone to be cognizant of the problem, and generous with your efforts. In this issue of JTJ, we bring you a little of everything. Relish the original Civil War records with which we begin the issue, giggle at some of the shenanigans that took place on Caney Fork about 1900 - 1915, and be sure to notice the work of David Nolan Bishop, who gave us permission to include that family in this issue. Nothing is more exciting for genealogists than a surprise windfall, and we include one of those this time with the Mount Pleasant Church records. Our membership now consists of 207 souls, for which we have the hard work of all Society members to thank. We broke our own record again! Share all of this good genealogy with your Jackson County neighbors, no matter where you are. (And work on those Heritage Book submissions.) Bryson of Asheville. They show his grandparents, John Sullivan Bryson and Olive Mariah Crawford Bryson. John S. Bryson was one of the sons of Robert Bryson and Mary Jane Cunningham Bryson. Olive Mariah was one of the daughters of William R. Crawford and Olive V. Hemphill'Crawford. These photographs were probably made in the 1890's. Both of these persons were dead before 1910. u Above, a picture of octogenarian members present at the Society picnic in August. From the left, first row, are Rachel Brown PhiUips, Willa Mae Dills Scroggs, and Regenia Pannell Fisher. Standing in the second row are Helen Davis Cooper and Elise Monteith Terrell. In July of 1999, we were the recipients of a most unusual genealogical and historical coincidence. JCGS member Vee Jones had invited the editor to his home to view a Civil War company clerk's book. The book turned out to be from Company G of the North Carolina 16th Regiment. Less than a week later, JCGS member Debra Dotson sent an e-mail transcript of the Company Clerk's book from Company L of the same regiment. We will not make any attempt here to be comprehensive with these records, since they are of more importance to Haywood County, but they are worthwhile for our publication nonetheless. SC, and died March 26,1865 in Richmond, VA in CSA brigade hospital. He married MARIAH (MAREIGH) LOUISA BERRY Augusf31,1843 in Spartanburg Co., SC, daughter of WILLIAM COFFEE BERRY (October 19, 1796 - October 10, 1880) and LETTICIA WOODY (May 22,1798-April 14, 1855). She was born April 10, 1826 in Buncombe Co., NC. and died February 27,1915 in Jackson Co., NC, in the home of her son Daniel Franklin. Notes for JOHN BELTON BISHOP: John apparently was deceased when his father wrote his will December 23, 1882. 'Lois A. Sullins Heun advised that he died in a Richmond brigade hospital in 1865. Much of the information on this line was furnished in 1997 by Lois Heun; 3931 Blanton Rd.; Mill Spring, NC 28756. Lois advised that more info might be available from B. L. Later correspondence with Lois, however, indicated that the information about someone giving her the land was apparently wrong since records show she bought it from Lucenda Russell. For example, it wiU work for a person bom in July but died in May, but one must use straight subtraction if the deceased were born in June and died in December. We are not sure of the origin of the "constant number." Obviously, if a person were bom and died in the same month, Uving after one's birthday would be easy to calculate. Should the deceased have a death date of December 6, and the age was 71,11,14, then the numbers would look this way: 19511206 - 711114 18800092 8870 18791222 (Birthdate was December 22,1879) 157 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 1999 G e m s , J e w e l s , a n d F o o l ' s G o l d | , ( Recognitions, good times, and nonsense surrounding JCGS members) Gems and Jewels: Helen Wood, who has accomplished something new with genealogy every time she walks in the door of the Society office. Helen started her genealogy as a gift to her husband, who is an invalid. Her words: "I think God makes it possible for me to find new material." (Helen, not only do we admire your faith, we also recognize your abilities to cut through barriers to find what you need.) Helen Davis Cooper, who was honored a few weeks ago with an 80th birthday party, where we saw many Society members. Helen's words: "You helped to make it special." (Helen, we were honored to be invited to a special occasion for someone who is herself so special.) Daniel Deitz, who we miss seeing at meetings because of his illness and surgery. For those of you who don't know him, this man has the best memory for genealogy we have ever encountered. (Daniel, we send along a big 'Hello there' to you, we wish you the very best, and we need you back with us.) Walter "Bud" Bryson, who has visited our Society office twice. He is a grandson of OUve Mariah Crawford Bryson, younger sister of the editor's great-great grandfather, and the first descendant of this family we have ever met. We were privUeged to take him to the resting places of his great-grandfather Robert Bryson at Old Field and his great-great grandfather John Bryson at CuUowhee Baptist, the latter an ancestor for a dozen or more of our Society members. Fool's Gold: Overheard by JCGS Vice-President Sharon Barger Carnes in a Kentucky library: " I just need one more name and I'U have the Campbells back to Adam and Eve." (Sharon did not die laughing. She is around to tell others of us such nonsense.) Overheard by the editor in an Ohio Ubrary: " I have this family traced back to Alfred the Great" (Hmmm...Ethelbert begat Egbert, who begat Ethelred, who begat Alfred, who begat William Smith. Is that how it was? Sounds like a terminal case of ermine fever from here.) Spoken to Society President Rick FrizzeU when, on a history trip to Chattanooga, he made a wrong turn on 1-75 and stopped at a service station for directions: "You know that class you take in school where you study maps and stuff? I failed it." (And rather badly, we would imagine.) 158 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 1999 L < T h e N i c h o l s o n J u s t i c e o f t h e P e a c e B o o k (Ed. Through the years, the editor has been privileged to be granted access to the records of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Having grown up in that church, we have been most grateful for the kindness of the clerks and Boards of Deacons in allowing access to these records. They are of incredible value, because the clerks were conscientious about writing obituaries for deceased members. In the obituaries from Book 1, almost all of them date from a time when North Carolina did not require death certificates. Furthermore, a number of the people listed here have no gravestones, so this source is one of the few, if not the only, means available to determine parentage and vital dates. Now in the possession of Church Clerk Denny Mathis, these records were abstracted Septentber 20,1999 by Larry Crawford and Roth Shuler. Ruth Shuler also transcribed the original minutes and constitution of the church. One will notice that at the time of the founding of the church in 1852, Jackson County was not yet operating as a county. Also, while the founding of the church was seven years after the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845, the body referred to themselves as "United Baptists," and welcomed as its first new member a black woman. One wonders if the Civil War affected the allegiance and associational membership of the church.] Constitution of Mount Pleasant Church Haywood County NC On the 16th day of June A.D. 1852 The following Brethren desmissed from Scotts Creek Church, viz: James Crawford, Wm. Carson, John Brown, Wm. R. Crawford, Thos. Henson, Anna Crawford, Margaret U. Brown, Oliff Crawford, Mary E. Henson, Syntha Carsori/Syntha Hooper, Mary C. Carson, Esther T. Mingus, before which Presbytery the above named members presented themselves, day above written, and after a thorough examination was found to embrace the following .Articles: 1": We believe in one only living and true God, and that there are three persons in the Godhead, the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost, and that these three are one in substance, and equal in power and glory. 2nd: We believe the scriptures of the old and new testaments are the word of God, and the only rule of faith and practice. 3rd: We believe in the doctrine-of original sin. 4*: We believe in mans impotency to recover himself from the fallen state he, is in, by his own free will and ability. 5th: We believe that sinners are justified in the sight of God, only by the imputed righteous of Jesus Christ. 6* : We believe the saints shall persevere in Grace, and they never shall fell finally away. 7*: We believe that Baptistm and the Lords Supper are ordinances instituted by Christ, and that true believers are the only proper subjects thereof. 8*: We believe that the true mode of baptism is immersion. 9d>: We believe that no person has a right to administer the ordinances but such as are regularly called and qualified thereunto. 10th: We believe that no man should be ordained to the ministry, without the unanimous voice of the Church to which he belongs. 11*: We believe in the resurection of the dead, and a general Judgement; that the punishment of the wicked shall be everlasting, and the Joys of the righteous eternal. 163 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 1999 12th : We the members of Mount Pleasant Church, agreeing to the above articles of faith, do, for, and in behalf of each other, covenant, and agree and give ourselves up to each other, in church and Christian fellowship, in order to keep up the unity of the spirit in the bonds of peace, and to assist each other in all matters of distress, and pray for each others prosperity.
