Larry Crawford Journeys Through Jackson is the official publication of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the E d i t or Whether one chooses to call it cooperation, generosity, or higher-level interdependence, that practice of sharing genealogy with our fellow researchers must be one of the noblest impulses associated with this pursuit. How sad to think that some people are afflicted with a territorial selfishness where genealogy is concerned. The responses to our December questionnaire should prove to all that a spirit of true cooperation is pervasive among the members of JCGS. The enthusiasm - even exuberance - is evident, the hard work and dedication are very apparent, the serendipitous moments and the humor are manifest, and frankly, the disappointments (particularly as regards the lack of time ) are obvious as we read these accounts of the members' genealogical year. Besides the questionnaire responses, in this issue be entertained and edified by Betty Cope Andrews, Edward Cowas, Clara Sutton Stern, and Mack Sutton as they share their family work with us. For those who requested it, see also a list of e-mail addresses of JCGS members. The next year of Jackson County death certificates is in this issue, and the editor shares one theory hoping to elicit comment. Recently-affiliated member Thomas Gross and reliable member Shawna Hall share photographs with us this time, and while the published copies will not do justice to the originals, they are both very welcome additions to this issue. A number of members of the Society have donated materials, books, photographs, and charts to be used at our new facility, but we would encourage all members to submit an ancestral chart to be filed, plus anything else that you would like to see our members enjoy. One little unpleasantness: those of you who receive a yellow reminder with this issue have not yet renewed for 1998. We feel sure that this is just the oversight of busy persons. We don't want to lose you, and we want your ideas and contributions to our group. Finally, a word of congratulations is due our vice-presidents. So far in 1998 alone, the Society programs have been so outstanding mat our new meeting space is already crowded. Clements, b.1845 GA. She was the daughter of Lucy Clements and a Mr. Rogers from Cullowhee. This Mr. Rogers had a sister named Mary who married Jason Chastain. With this information in mind, I concluded mat Martha's father was either Robert Rogers, b. 1822, or his brother Hugh. Both of these men were sons of David Rogers I and Mary Berry. Both Robert and Hugh Rogers went on to marry, but when Martha was born, both .were single. Can anyone help me determine who Martha's father was? Martha married Elliott W. (Bud) Shelton from Cullowhee." [Ed. Certainly one circumstantial piece of evidence here would be the will of Hugh Rogers. As abstracted in the March-April 1996 issue of Journeys, Hugh in a codicil gives Martha Shelton the land where she is living.] Charles Bruce Williams, 2024 West Roberta Avenue, Fullerton, CA92833 ( e-mail wnrizl S@prodigyjiet') writes, "I'm stumped on my Benjamin Riley Williams, would like to find his parents and siblings. One of the most rewarding aspects of"doing genealogy" is to share with others the results of our research. In this way, persons may coordinate their common interests and are able to make the journey easier for others, not only by revealing some of the brightness at the end of the tunnel, so to speak, but also by placing caution signs at the potholes and crevices. We share here the enormously interesting achievements of those JCGS members who responded to the December questionnaire.] " (We) received a letter with offer of help from S. Massingale.. .working on family papers on Crawfords to send.. .working on grave markers for folks from Jackson County buried in Lewis County." Carol and Dave Broom (Vader, Washington) " In 19971 heard from distant relatives of my Messer and Wikle connection.. .phone call and information from Oklahoma (more pieces to the puzzle), and letters and pictures from Ocie Stinnett.. .one (is) of my mother, in her 80's now, and her family when they were young in NC. Ocie also sent a picture of my grandfather and his family when he was a young boy. The picture also includes his maternal grandmother. These are precious treasures. Thanks again to Ocie. I look forward to more surprises in 1998." Barbara Bishop (Chehalis, Washington) ".. .Though I am a new member, my father was a member in good standing and a native of Jackson County. My father, Howard Monteith Nation(s), passed away this year and I would like to continue membership for his sake. I have been passed down the family archives and though I 'm sure I won't do as good a j ob as he did, I will try to maintain the family records as best I can. My father had gotten a lot of information from Betty Cope Andrews about my grandmother Julia Bell Monteith, but your article on the Monteith family has made me realize mat she has gathered more info on the family.. .My father's earliest confirmed relative was James L. Nations of Jackson County." R. H. Nation (El Paso, Texas) " My wife and I spent a week in Jackson County visiting the justice center, libraries in Jackson and Swain counties, visiting people, attended the Sutton family reunion at Barker's Creek Community Building. Visited several cemeteries, attended church at Locust Field, where my great-grandfather and grandmother are buried." Bill R. Hensley (Dallas, North Carolina) " I work on the Shuler family, but I couldn't get anyone in my mother's Beasley family to start working. (So) I started it last August and I work on it from 4 to 6 hours a day—every day. I have over 10,000 names in t h e Shuler family and over 3,000 in the Beasley-Leatherman-Wykle and Ammons families. It's so exciting—it's hard to lay down. You never come to the end." Charles Robert Shuler (Clyde, NC) " I confess I was rather lazy in 1997 and did not do much research at all. I "filled in" a few stray details, but nothing major. However, I have a new job schedule that gives me mornings off, so I'm "itching" to continue my research. I plan to concentrate on my most perplexing lines— Massingale, Adams, and Queen." Tera L. Rockett (Conover, NC) " I have not been able to extend my lines; however, I have been able to fill in some dates and some children on the lines I have been working on. I have worked in the Family History Center in our area. I feel I have accomplished quite a bit there, for myself and for the patrons who come. My husband and I.. .continue to work on our own genealogy." Helen Toler (Arimo, Idaho) " I may have found whom James Harrison Frizzell killed in 1876." Rick Frizzell (Sylva, NC) 35 KJ " In 1993,1 hit a dead end researching my Robinson ancestry. I knew that William M. Robinson was my 2nd great-grandfather, but I could not find anything about him prior to 1860. KJ Since joining the JCGS in November, I've received many good leads. Both William M. and his wife Elizabeth Fisher were listed on the 1850 Haywood County census. I've learned that my 3rd great-grandfather was Israel Robinson. Israel is on the 1830 Haywood County census. I communicated with a descendant of Israel's son, Washington Alexander. This descendant, Robert Robinson, who lives in Washington, has made a booklet of facts and stories on the Israel Robinson family, and is copying it for me. Robert also told me mat Israel was a member of the NC troops called up for service in the War of 1812. I was e-mailed various census data that has helped my research along. Last, I was e-mailed a Bible record of the Israel Robinson family from 1790-1900 listing all his children with birth dates. All of this occurred in... 2 months! I wouldn't know any of this were it not for the help of JCGS members Larry Crawford, Bill Crawford, Stevie Jones, and Mack Sutton. These folks have been a big help, and I 'm grateful." Dave Robinson (Upperco, Maryland) " I didn't accomplish any more on the Dotson family tree in 1997. I did accomplish a fun summer at Piney River rural Dickson, TN with my granddaughters while my son-in-law worked for 6 months at Nashville North American Galvanizing Company. I did find Dotsonville, Tennessee on a map; it is unincorporated. I would love to know when it was established by the pioneer settlers. I enjoyed the Jessie Miller Cogdill Mathis story." Jean Dotson Green (Carrolton, Illinois) " (We) joined JCGS. Found a cousin, Edward, in Washington. Thanks to Lloyd Cowan and Rick Frizzell, found out the father of Jerry Burdette Cowan, son of Nancy Cowan. It was Ezekiel Gribble. Have been helping a friend trace ancestors; his ggg uncle was President Benjamin Harrison. My biggest challenge is trying to find my great-grandfather for my Dad. He was a German immigrant to Altoona, PA ca. 1840-1860. We have his Americanized name and little else in the way of info. My Dad is 72, and has been trying to find information on his grandfather for 20 years. Both his parents died young. Have discovered the extensive holdings of the local Family History Center of the LDS Church." Mike and Becky Cowan (Greensboro, NC) " One of the daughters of Ida Nancy Phillips Clayton asked me to research her mother's family. This research involved the Brendle, Parker, Farris, Long, Bevins, and related families. (Ida Nancy Phillips was a daughter of Robert Phillips and Miley Brendle.)" Gene McClure (Asheville, NC) " I was able to collect all individual family history information for my mother's family, their children and their grandchildren. I have traced the Sterling line to the early 1800's. I found documented evidence of Melungeon heritage through my paternal grandmother- Croston family." Mike Pendergast (Cullowhee, NC) " I acquired some new info on the Stratton/Struttons, but could not connect them to my Susan Strutton Furr Dills, b. 1813 Burke Co., NC." Milt Dills (Baxley, GA) " While continuing to search for Boiling connections, had several e-mail connections from "new" cousins. My husband, James Marvin Peters, is doing a revision of his 1985 publication Peters Family of Scott County, Virginia. Have been aiding him. Hope to publish by '99." E. Ann Hampton Peters (New Carlisle, Ohio) KJ 36 c " Talked to several family members, but no chance to follow up. Spent summer and fall with my mother, Jane Parton Greene, who died in October." Lavine Greene Callicott (Suitland, Maryland) " Our best genealogical moments of 1997 were related to two of James' families. Through the Neff family home page on the Internet, we learned about his 10th great-grandfather's heroism in a 1531 Swiss Reformation battle that took place in Kappel, Switzerland. Because of his heroism, Adam Neff was given houses and lands; he and his descendants were made honorary citizens of Zurich; and his sword, sheath, and cutlery have now been placed in the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. In July we visited both Zurich and Kappel. One of the homes given to Adam now belongs to the Neff Family Foundation, and James' distant cousin, Peter Neff, who is currently president of the foundation, met us there and showed us through the house. It is a beautiful half-timbered structure located in lovely, rolling countryside. We also went to the museum, and it was very exciting to look at the sword and realize it had belonged to a direct ancestor. The other discovery was much closer to home. We learned where James' 2nd great-grandfather, George Washington Denton, is buried in Winston Co., AL. I sent a query to the Winston Co. web page, asking if any descendants still lived there, and received an answer right away saying mat James probably had more cousins there than he would ever want to know about. (No, never too many.) We are looking forward to going there this spring, meeting them, and seeing, for the first time, pictures of George and his wife Sarah. Our biggest disappointment this year was the fact that I seem to have proven that Samuel Denton, who lived here in Jackson County on Caney Fork Road in 1810, was not James' 5th great-grandfather, as I had been told by other Denton researchers. It was nice to think that his ancestor had lived on the very road where we live now. I do think there is a definite relationship, but not direct descent. The most exciting find in my family was an unlabeled tintype (in possession of a cousin) that I was able to identify as my greatgrandfather, John Simon Wilson. He died between 1870 and 1880, and I had never dared to hope to see a picture of him." Barbara and James Dooley (Cullowhee, NC) " I now have a database of over 10,000 names, most from Jackson andK surrounding counties. And I have to tell you that I have come to the conclusion that EVERYONE with roots in Jackson County is related! When I do a kinship report, I kind of break out in a cold sweat; I 'm related to some people as many as six ways... .My main source for research this year has been die Internet. It is full of genealogical resources.. .1 have been in e-mail contact with several JCGS members, including Marty Grant and Stevie Leigh Jones. I have a web page with genealogy information at http://www.concentric.net/~Shahall. if anyone wants to visit. I have met many cyber-cousins via the Internet, including Linda Hoxit Raster, Lamar Owen, Penny Pickelsimer, Martha Broom Gross, Ron Hooper, and Daneen Swank. We have been able to share information and establish long-distance friendships. A lady who stumbled onto my web page contacted me, and it turned out she is a Mathis cousin through a line that moved to Utah that I had no knowledge of.. .1 hope to get to North Carolina in the spring.. .Perhaps some day I can meet some of my many, many cousins in person. Shawna Hall (Waterford, Michigan) " I wrote an article for the Lincoln County Heritage on James Milton & Sarah Fox Keever, who are buried at Locust Field Cemetery. I still need a lot of help with Keever descendants. In JTJ, Rick Frizzell recommended the World Family Tree Maker, which was sent to me by a niece, Mitzi Keever Riddle, ha their software I found Fox/EIler maternal lines back to the 1500's. What a day that was! David Stiles continues to be my mentor for the Stiles descendants of Revolutionary War John and Sarah, buried at Dills Cemetery. My older Battle family was extended whenl received the book We Begin with Matthew by Jack Battle. Mack Sutton and I exchanged information on Sutton lines. Many thanks to Betty Queen Monteith for her help on 37 Queen, Franklin, & Higdon genealogy. I have enjoyed hearing from all JTJ members who . wrote to me in 1997." Betty Keever Luedtke (Gresham, Oregon) Ky "This was not a 'genealogy year ' for me. Helped my son-in-law get started and introduced him to researching in Sweden (organization of civil govt & the Church of Sweden) plus the patronymic system of names. Exchanged data with some of my former wife's long lost cousins." G. Harry Ensley, Jr. (Lakeland, Florida) " Completed two family history & genealogical documents- 1) Hall Families of Jackson and other Western North Carolina Counties—Ten Generations of Halls 2) Search for the Ancestors of My Great-Grandparents, Henry Brogden and Eliza Watson—A Success Story." Edward Cowan (Mercer Island, Washington) " 1 ) Completed update on John Sutton Sr. (compiled by Mack Sutton and Clara Stern). Update sent to LDS in Utah and on the Inrternet 2) Answered queries from out-of-state persons re Sutton. 3) Researched and collected materials for a book on the James Sutton descendants." Clara Stern (Sylva, NC) " Used my back issues of Journeys to add a lot to my files. Biggest discovery was finding my g-g- g- grandparents were buried 2 miles from my house at the Franklin Cemetery (Long Branch)." Peggy Queen Mason (Dillsboro, NC) Ky " During the past year I continued research on the family of my great-grandfather, Phillip Dills. I had a visit by Ed and Mary Sue Dills von Gerichten from Texas. Mary's parents were Leonidas Ellis Dills and Charlotte Blanch McCall of Macon County, but Mary was born and reared in New York. Mary and I visited several cemeteries where members of the Dills clan are buried. I also had visits by Ruth Crook Smith and Glenn Dills, who are descendants of Andrew Jackson Dills (son of Phillip) and Susannah Clements Dills. Cicero LeGrand (Lee) Dills and Rachel Matilda Gribble Dills were their grandparents. I helped Scott Brank of Weaverville trace his Hall ancestry, and to the surprise of both of us, found that we have a common Dills ancestor. Scott also helped me to locate another distant Dills relative in Buncombe County. In June my immediate family had a family reunion with 35 present. I gave them an updated version of our Dills lineage. We attended a Cochran reunion at Ruth and Roy Shuler's and met several of Sam's Cochran relatives." Dorris Beck (Sylva, NC) " Member & cousin Sharon Carnes and I traveled to the SC State Archives, and though disappointed with copy and viewing machines, we managed to obtain death certificates for a great-great-great uncle, George Phillip Dills, a great-great-great uncle James Mathis and his wife Rebecca, and a step-great-great grandfather Jerome B. Shoemaker. Closer to home, many hours were spent at the Jackson County and Macon County courthouses doing research, as well as at Hunter Library going through census records. Also attended family reunions for Anders, Broom, and Massingale, and unfortunately a few family funerals. All in all, I feel as though I have accomplished a lot but not nearly enough-of course in genealogy is there ever enough?" Sandy Massingale (Tuckasegee, NC) " Followed Morton line back to England through George Morton, who landed in Plymouth Colony in 1623 on the ship Anne. Also traced ancestry back to England through Robert Boiling, whose first wife was Jane Rolfe (Pocahontas' granddaughter) and whose second wife was Anne Stith, my ancestor. Did research in Richmond, Fort Wayne, Mansfield, Ohio, and western Kentucky." Larry Morton (Cullowhee, NC) Ky 38 " Thanks to online queries, I met a fellow researcher and Bryson descendant, Larry Crawford. ^ With his help, I've found out the mystery of my gg grandmother, Ruth Jane Mathis Bryson, but still searching for the fate of my gggrandfather, LaFayette C. Bryson, son of James H. Bryson and Margaret Hyatt. Found documentation of Ruth Jane and LaFayette's marriage, and also found their other two children, James P. and Margaret Catherine (who married Albert Parker.) Also, I've met a lot of distant cousins that I had no idea were out there. Very exciting!" Betty Davis Barnard (Groveland, Florida) " My cousin, Sandy Massingale, and I spent many hours and days researching our shared family history in Jackson, Macon, Swain, & Transylvania counties. We traveled to Columbia, SC, & accomplished some revelatory research at the Archives on our Anders, Mathis, & Dills lines. We also traveled to Lamar Co., GA, & visited our Great Aunt Gaitha Mathis Durham, whom I had never met, to "interrogate" her about family history. Everything's as clear as mud now. We have discovered an unsubstantiated clue that our ggggrandmother Clarinda Mathis, wife of James, was a Barnes. We hit the motherlode on our Anders line when two strangers, though Anders', showed up at our family reunion with the missing link between our gggrandfather David Askul Anders and the other Anders families of Henderson Co., NC. And, despite what we did for the Society, the number of cemeteries we tramped through from Kentucky to South Carolina in the past year must be some kind of record." Sharon Barger Carnes (Cullowhee, NC) " I have responded to the query from Robert and Helen Bumgarner that was in JTJ with a letter and information. I have found one generation back in my Dyer genealogy. My daughter gave me her laptop computer. I have learned a little about how to use it, but I am still an amateur." Neil Irvin Baumgartner (Candler, NC) Saa»s " I have been working for several years on the family of Martha Jane Queen and Isaac Elijah Styles, who were married 31 Mar 1874 in Jackson Co. During the past summer, my husband Michael (who is the Queen/Styles descendant) and I visited newfound relatives Earlene and Howard Fisher in Sylva. Howard and Michael both are great-grandsons of the above couple. Howard descends from a daughter, Rosa M., who married Mack C. Mathis, and through their daughter Josephine who married Sam H. Fisher. Michael descends from a daughter, Phoebe Lorinda, who married William Robert Stanford, and through their son Frank Isaac Stanford. The Fishers shared some of their stories about the Styles family and took us to Love Cemetery to visit the unmarked graves of Martha Jane, Isaac Elijah, and their son John Stiles. Margaret Maybelle Stiles, another daughter of theirs, is also buried there in a marked grave. With tidbits of info we got during our visit, I have been able to find the death certificate of John Stiles at the Archives in Raleigh, which has given much info on him. Also I have been able to begin tracking another daughter, Mary Palestine, who married Columbus Monroe Henry, and left North Carolina with her family for Washington state sometime in the early 1900's. Michael and I would like to thank all of those who have helped us along the way with this family, especially Ed Stinnett & Earl Wood (both JCGS members), Jenny Tenlen and Jan Watson (both of Washington state whom we 'met' via the computer and GenWeb), and the Fishers. May all of us have continued success in our researches during 1998!" Barbara L. Clint Gold (Sand Springs, Oklahoma) 39 " I found Grandpa William Rodrick Moss-wife Sadie Pierson Moss. "Willie" as he was called was killed in a coal mine explosion at Heather Run Coal Mine, Kingwood, W. Va. in Preston County. B. 1878, m. 9/06/1896, d. 1/13/1919. (Documentation: Death certificate from Dept. of Mines Fatal Accidents. 2) I obtained a picture of Willie from Elizabeth Moss Wilson. I had what she needed and she had what I needed-we are double 2nd cousins. 3) Found and documented the Moss family of Virginia. I am documenting my family line in a book. I'm publishing Pine Creek Mosses Jackson, Macon Co., NC. (Other related families: Pierson, Hooper, Norton, White, Burrell). How I wish Mr. Lawrence Wood had lived to see this info. He was a wonderful, sharing, and kind man. What fun! What information.. .never ending! Seeing some of the wildest mountains in my life in our trip to eastern Kentucky and W. Va. Grandpa Wm. R. Moss is found and he was my GOAL. This spring we will journey to Kingwood and mark and plant a tree at his resting place." Louise Moss Ansley (Winchester, Tennessee) " 1 ) 1 found lots of ancestors for my clients. 2) I helped found the CASHIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY and am doing the research (mostly genealogical) for a proposal to qualify the Mordecai Zachary-Tolbert house in Cashiers on the National Register of Historic Properties." Jane Gibson Nardy (Cashiers, NC) " My most interesting genealogical successes in 1997 involved research and the Internet. Historically, the Internet has not been a source for genealogical source material, but rather a way to locate other researchers. Over the past twelve or eighteen months, that has begun to change. Projects such as USGenWeb include almost every county in the United States.. ..Personally, I have had much success with my Arrowood family research using the Internet. An e-mail from Ralph Clark helped me locate the grave of my 3rd great-grandfather Arrowood. Ironically, Ralph is in Los Angeles; the grave in Franklin, NC. Finally, I must add that my most valuable resource is our local Society.. .the members as individuals are a valuable resource for me: Barbara Dooley has given me a dozen generations of Denton and Chastain ancestors. John Siekierski and I have been working on the Mills family. Bill Crawford knows a little something about every family in the county; Mack Sutton knows the rest." Kirk Stephens (Sylva, NC) " Finished collecting over 1,300 photos for my new book, Along the River: People and Places, to be published next spring, and will be nothing but photos dating from the 1880's to the present of people who once lived in the Fontana Lake basin area. Supplied old photos and commentary for UNC-TV documentary 'The Road to Nowhere.' Gave a slide lecture for the Great Smokies Park at Bryson City in their History Symposium series. Allowed the Park to copy several hundred of my old photos for their archives. Met or corresponded with several wagonloads of new cousins and exchanged genealogical information." Duane Oliver (Hazelwood, NC) " Was out of genealogy for about three years, but was able to add about 500 names this year by reviewing copies of Jackson and Macon County Heritage books, old copies of JTJ, and a hand-copied version of a Stewart-Moss book. I have yet to receive a copy of JTJ that doesn't list at least one person I am kin to. Thanks for your valuable help." Mitchell Watson (Stanley, NC) " Got a new computer. Installed Family Tree Maker. Learned to use the Internet. Loaded what we knew of our families on FTM, then started using county queries to fill in many blanks. Have good tree constructed for W.L.D. Broom descendants and John Ammons descendants (both grandparents of Martha Lou Broom Gross.) Made contact with Shawna Hall and her extensive data base on Jackson County. I have 20,078 in my computer now." Henry Buchanan (Gastonia,NC) '•During the past year I have almost completed the research for admission to First Families of Tennessee. I will submit this material shortly, as I have all the evidence needed. Just need to organize it. This will be through the Graham, Atchley, and Ogle lines of my father's family. In September I made a trip to WNC intending to spend two and a half weeks there. Because of a family emergency, it was limited to one week. I spent that one week in Pisgah Forest, but with the help of my husband's cousins, the Grover Meltons, I made trips to several family-related cemeteries—Wood (at Wolf ML), Lower Coward, Sols Creek, and Keener. I was able to visit with Sharon Brown and her father in Pisgah Forest, and he was able to identify a few of my mystery photographs.... When I was in NC, I brought with me the original of the Civil War diary in my possession. • I had planned to investigate the facilities at Cullowhee, and to find out if the diary could be microfilmed, so that the information would be available to any interested parties. ... The book itself would not withstand a great deal of handling. Perhaps the most unusual discovery I have made this year, and which I will not feel free to claim until I prove for myself one vital link, is a direct relationship to Martha Allen Carrier (wife of Thomas Carrier), who was hanged as a witch on August 19,1692, in Andover, MA. This is in my mother's line, going through the Morey family to Jones, Doane, Hazen, then Carrier. I am still working on that one. I have heard of skeletons in the closet, but was not expecting a witch!" Jean Atchley Graham Brown (Englewood, Colorado) " I wrote fifteen stories about my ancestors which were published in county history books for McMinn Co., TN, Monroe Co., TN, and Polk Co. TN." Richard Nelson King (Weaverville, NC) " I continued to research my husband's Brown family and allied families in 1997. I've added many cousins to our computer program and did more searches in Wilkes and Alexander Counties in NC. Betty Cope Andrews' work on the Monteith family, published in Journeys, has helped tremendously with my husband's mother's family. My most memorable, achievement was securing the Family Record pages from my third great-grandparents' Bible. Rev. William R. and Olif Varina Hemphill Crawford's Bible is in the possession of Gary Loren Welch of Denver, Colorado, with whom I visited in the summer of 1997." Jean Crawford Brown (Macon, Georgia) " 1997 proved to be a break-through year in Cockerham research in several different ways. First, ties were cemented with descendants of Jesse Burch Cockerham, who left North Carolina about 1903. Contact had been made in 1996 with Grant Cochran, a grandson of Jesse Burch, and he and his wife Phyllis visited with us for two weeks in the spring of 1997. It was a wonderful treat to be able to make good on our promise to Grant to find him some cousins (I'm not sure he realized until he got here just how many cousins we were talking about!). We visited cemeteries, took pictures, spent hours talking with various cousins, and attended the reunion of the Thomas Worth Cockerham branch of the family in Bryson City. A special day was enjoyed 41 on June 7, when relatives from five different lines of the John Burch-Delphia Hall Cockerham family got together at our home for the first "Cockerham Cousins" reunion, a gathering which we Ky hope to continue in alternate years. While looking at land records in Jackson County, we were able to document that Grant's grandmother, Laura Bell Wilson, was a Mauson-Brunetta Cockerham Wilson descendant. We also took a trip to Ringgold, Georgia, where we visited with descendants of Coleman Wilson, brother to Laura Bell. Not only did we find cousins for Grant, we found cousins for ourselves! Later in the summer Reanous Cochran and his sister, Patty Cochran Kelley, and their spouses Sandra Cochran and Allen Kelley visited with us. Reanous and Patty are also grandchildren of Jesse Burch Cockerham. Reanous and Sandra live in Oregon, while Patty and Allen live in Durham, NC. A very special part of this research has been the knowledge that the three living children of William Curney Cockerham and the only surviving child of Jesse Burch Cockerham now talk and write to each other, even though they have never met The next break-through came in Salt Lake City in July. Daniel Stewart Cockerham, a son of William and Charity Cockerham, had vanished from North Carolina records after 1846, and he and his family were located in Iowa records, where they had moved when that territory became a state. A few lucky telephone calls, and I was able to talk with a great-great granddaughter who lives in Salt Lake City. On the way home from Salt Lake City, some more lucky phone calls turned up descendants of William Wilson, son of Manson and Brunetta Cockerham Wilson. (These descendants) live north of Denver. We were also able to visit in Denver with descendants of Delphia Rotine Cockerham Cabe, sister to Brunetta and Jesse Burch. This branch of the family has lived in Denver since about 1910, but neither they nor the Wilson cousins were aware that the others lived in the same general vicinity. 1997 proved to be a special year in Cockerham research. Now if only I could place William, the progenitor of all these others, in a Virginia family in 1780 " Ruth Crawford Shuler (Cullowhee, NC) " I have never learned any restraint in genealogy, so I never focus on just one family or two. I get just as excited when Charlie Fori finds a new Sicilian as I do with my own Scotch-Irish. But having that shortcoming also leads to the fact that in 19971 was able to enjoy vicariously the outstanding success of my two sisters, Ruth Shuler and Jean Brown, who truly added important data to both our Crawford and Cockerham research.. .1 again was able to derive great satisfaction from editing Journeys and seeing it go to the print shop every two months, but I hasten to add that Kirk Stephens is the brains behind this publication.. .1 extended my Hemphill line to the Rowan County family of that name, but my verifcations are still in the theoretical stages on that one.. .1 attempted to help four new JCGS members find a few ancestors.. .the addition of a new computer in August made it possible for me to enjoy genealogy on the Internet, and I was able to add some names and dates to the page of my great-great grandmother Louisa Hinshaw Norman in the Hinshaw Family Association pages.. .1 was privileged to visit the Maryland State Archives and the Library of Virginia in April, looking with my good friend Mike Shay for his ancestors, but finding some interesting Normans to pursue on my own.. .Both on that trip and again in August with Rick Frizzell and his family, I was able to visit the battlefield at Malvern Hill, where 3rd great-uncle Andrew Jackson Crawford met his demise trying to chase the evil Yankee into the James River...On a couple of occasions, I took off on wild goose chases concerning Cheadles and Woodsons, who are still not caught.. .1 visited the usual courthouses, libraries, and archives for one genealogical reason or another.. .1 failed miserably to keep up with the Society's correspondence.. .Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed a summer of collecting data for the cemetery book, and traveling around with Bill Crawford and Mack Sutton, I learned more than just genealogy, but that's another (hilarious) story." Copied from the Robert Lee Wike Bible. 45 One Theory About the Hoopers , . [Ed. Since the following is the editor's own work, the byline will occur at the bottom of the page.] In collecting materials to be published in Journeys Through Jackson, I ran across an item that might be of value to Hooper researchers. Since I am not a Hooper descendant, I can only guess at its value, but it might possibly shed some light on an area of disagreement. Persons knowledgeable about Jackson County families know that both Absolem Hooper and Clemmons Hooper lived in the Caney Fork area. In at least one public affidavit, Clemmons swore to being the brother of Absolem. In Jackson County Heritage, story # 834, F. Lambert Hooper Jr. draws descendancy from John Hooper of Tuckasegee. John's wife is called Margaret Ledbetter, and John himself is shown as a son of Absolem. Lucille Hooper Cabe Bryson, a descendant of Clemmons Hooper, wrote a paper Hoopers and Stephens - Paternal Families Woods and Wikes - Maternal Families in 1985- 1986. In it she devotes some space to the Absolem Hooper family, and the same author in Jackson County Heritage, story # 829, mentions the same family. In both instances, she does not name a son John, but she does mention a daughter Margaret, who married an unnamed Bell. Again, I am not a Hooper descendant, and I am in no position to call either Lambert Hooper or Lucille Bryson incorrect, but I would ask each of them to consider the following theory of synthesis. In 1853, the Jackson County Equity Court minutes reveal that ten of the children of KJ Absolem Hooper have sued the other two. The first paragraph reads as follows: The Bill of Complaint of Enos Hooper, James Hooper, William Moss and wife Elizabeth, Abram Picklesimer and wife Elinor, Benjamin Chastain and wife Nancy, Absolem Hooper, Mary Brown, John Hooper and wife Margaret, Milton Brown and wife Kisiah, and Jonathan, William, Andrew, Caroline, Sarah, and Mary Hooper children of Andrew Hooper, complainants against William Hooper of the County of Jackson and Isaac Hooper of the State of Georgia defendants. Notice the way this is written. Like all legal documents of its day, the men in a family could act for themselves. Married women, on the other hand, are listed with their husbands. My conclusion is that Absolem Hooper did have a daughter Margaret, who was married to John Hooper. This John may well have been a cousin, one of the northeast Georgia Hoopers. Perhaps Margaret had been married before, to a Ledbetter or a Bell or both, but I believe that she was Margaret Hooper Hooper. I have seen in the past a Hooper book that includes an affidavit of one of the sons of John and Margaret Hooper calling Absolem Hooper his grandfather. I believe he was correct, but that Absolem was his maternal grandfather. Also consider that Margaret was born in SC according to census records, John in Georgia. Would this not be congruent with the other children of Absolem born about the same time? And isn't John Hooper, born 3 March 1783, a little too old to be one of Absolem Hooper's children? I would welcome the comments of Hooper descendants. In our January-February issue, we published the first part of JCGS member Edward Cowan's "Search for the Ancestors of My Great-Grandparents, Henry Brogden and Eliza Watson." We are pleased to offer the conclusion of this account in this issue.] The Henry Brogden Lineage Henry Brogden's father was Thomas Brogden, and Sion Brogden was the father of Thomas. Sion, Thomas, Henry, and Henry's brothers will be tracked at ten-year intervals according to the census records. 1840 In 1840, Sion Brogden was living in Davie County, North Carolina. Davie is contiguous with Rowan, Iredell, Yadkin, and Forsyth Counties. Sion was 45 years old arid had a son between 15-20 years old. Because of expected location, name, time, and age, this son is almost certain to be Thomas, father of Henry. Benjamin Brogden lived close to Sion and was probably Sion's brother. 1850 By 1850, Sion and Benjamin are missing. Sion's son, Thomas, is living in Davie County with his first wife Nancy. Age in 1850 Thomas 29 Nancy 29 John 6 WilHam 3 Thomas 2 1860 Nancy, Thomas' first wife, is now gone and Thomas is married to Elvira. Nancy was the mother of John, William, Thomas, Henry, David, and Sarah. Elvira would become the mother of Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, Florence, and Victoria. Thomas was the father of 11 children, including, of course, our Henry Brogden. The oldest son, John, is missing in 1860. Age in 1860 Thomas 39 Elvira 33 WiUiam 13 Thomas 11 Henry 8 Daniel 6 Sarah 4 Samuel 1 1870 55 Thomas and Elvira have moved from Davie County to Yadkin County. Thomas and William cannot be located. His wife to be, Eliza Watson, was working for and living with the Davies family in Cullowhee. Henry and Eliza met, and were married on 20 May 1875 at the home of David Bigham. They lived in Jackson County until around 1879 when they moved to Whitewater township in Oconee County, South Carolina, about 50 miles south on present-day NC 107. Numerous other Brogden families lived in Jackson County, but kinship cannot be found between Henry and the other Brogdens. All the children of Henry and Eliza were born in North Carolina. Thomas is gone, and Elvira is living alone in Davie County at age 76. Daniel and Samuel Brogden, Henry's brothers, are both settled in Davie County. Henry and Eliza have long been back from South Carolina and are now settled in the Little Cove of East Fork. (Since) all their children were born in North Carolina, Henry must have moved to South Carolina around mid-1879 and returned to Jackson County before 1884. In 1900, Arlecia, Emma, and Cora Tea are all married. Except for a few years in Gaston County, they lived their lives on the very head of East Fork. Children were Henry (my Dad), Uncle Oliven, Uncle Cicero, Aunt Vioa Bell, and Uncle Ray. 2. Daughter Emma married Samuel Brogden. They settled in Davie County. Mama said Emma left Jackson County and never came back. In 1920, Emma is 38 and Samuel is 60. Their children are Zeter E., 18; Marshal, 17; Charles, 14; Celia, 13; Ethel, 12; Berlie, 10; and Mary . j C. This Samuel Brogden is believed to be one of the old Jackson County Brogdens, unrelated to our Henry Brogden line. 3. Daughter Tea married Lewis Buchanan of Jackson County. They moved to Gaston County for work in the textile plants and remained there. Lewis and Aunt Tea lived only a mile or so from my family, Henry and Lucy Cowan. They raised a very large family in Lowell. 4. Daughter Bell married Rufus Monteith, and like Aunt Tea and Lewis, they moved to, and remained in Lowell in gaston County. Aunt Bell lived only three miles or so from my family. 5. Henry's only son, Thomas, married Demerris Long and they had one son, James. Thomas died relatively young. James married Georgia Cagle of Greens Creek. They had three daughters, Johnnie Ruth, Peggie Jo, and Mable. Martin WMtmire, a grandson, lives on the old place. 6. Remember John, William, Thomas, and Daniel, Henry's brothers, became untrackable. They could have died or relocated in another state, or were just elusive at census time. Their whereabouts remain unknown. Daniel could not be located except for census years 1880 and 1900. Descendants of all these Brogdens could be out there somewhere. 7. Eliza Watson Brogden and Henry Brogden are buried in the East Fork Cemetery, Jackson County, North Carolina. 8. The descendants of Henry Brogden's brothers and sisters are most likely to be found in Davie County, North Carolina.
