We have seen some bitterly cold temperatures but also some beautiful snows. For those who do not like winter, the budding trees and the appearance of tulips and crocuses are encouraging signs that Old .Man Winter is slowly losing his grip on us. 1996 has started slowly but has still been hectic for our Society. We were forced to cancel both our January and February meetings because of snow and ice. The groundhog says that March an'! nril should be much better to us. Barbara Dooley and Rick Frizzell have been working on several good programs for the upcoming year. Mark your calendar now for the second Thursday of each month and plan to attend. Be sure to watch the Svlva Herald and listed to WRGC for information on the location of future meetings. The Board of Directors has met and discussed several issues. We are still pursuing a permanent home but we are not the only organization in Jackson County currently doing so. Space is limited and the number of organizations desiring facilities is growing by the day. 1 hope that we will know something definite by vear's end. Good luck in your research, and be sure to keep the Society informed of any important news and genealogical discoveries. Dear Larry. I have this item for the next issue of Journeys. 1 feel that this is in order since Ruth is retiring this spring. A Tribute to Ruth Shuler There comes a time in the life of any good organization when we should look back and see just how we got started. We tend to think that it was really easy, and it was for some of us, but it's \ery clear that some people worked very hard in order that others of us could coast along and share the glory of a job well done. We could never have done so well without a person to cover up for us and do the bulk of the work. I will be forever grateful for the help I had as President. Ruth Shuler is one of the most unselfish people I have ever known. I don't know of anyone who put more into the genealogical society than Ruth did, and 1 think the best wishes for a happy retirement would get many amens from the membership. ^_^^ (continued on inside back page) / j r ^ < w ^ < w March-April, 1996, Journeys Through Jackson Table of Contents Queries 27 Letter from Thomas S. I99S. The grandchildren are \me* numbered relative to Jason and Margaret Gribble Frizzell.) John Alexander Frizzell, third child of Jason and Margaret, was born September 5, 1827. On May 22, 1848, he married Nancy Monteith, born April 10, 1824, his first cousin once removed through the Gribbles. They were the parents of thirteen children, three of whom survived to adulthood. This family has been associated with the Webster community, and some few descendants still live there. John died September 28, 1876, Nancy July 25, 1910, and they are buried in the old Love Chapel Cemetery. Their children: Margaret E. Frizzell (1849) (1849) Thomas Martin Frizzell (1849) md. Mary Magdalene Dills William Daniel Frizzell (1851) md. Harriet Ellen Long James Robert Frizzell (1854) md. Martha Jane Bailey S. J. Frizzell (1857) A. T. Frizzell (1859) (1860) GRANDCHILD #22 - Margaret E. Frizzell This little child is mentioned in the Haywood County 1850 mortality schedule as dying May, 1849., Although I am quite possibly a year early, I believe her to be a twin to Thomas. O < w GRANDCHILD #23 - Thomas Martin Frizzell Thomas Martin Frizzell was born February 18, 1849, and died July 12, 1917. He married Mary Magdalene Dills. born-January 2, 1851, who died July 5, 1931. They lived in the Beta area of the county and are buried there in the Dills Cemetery on Fisher Creek. Their children: Laura E. Frizzell (1874) md. John Barnes Hattie Alma Frizzell (1876) md. Daniel G. Bryson GRANDCHILD #24 - William Daniel Frizzell Born in 1851, William Daniel Frizzell would live until 1914. On December 21, 1875, he married Harriet Ellen Long, born August 10, 1857, died June 11, 1936. I personally have no knowledge of the relative influence of this man in Jackson County affairs, but I am quite certain that neither Webster nor Jackson County was named for him as some people assert. He and Hattie are buried in the Webster Cemetery. Their children: Florence Belle Frizzell (1878) md. Lawrence L. Buchanan Joseph W. Frizzell (1879) Julia M. Frizzell (1881) md. John A. Stewart John Cathey Frizzell (1884) md. Dean Mason William Andrew Frizzell (1887) md. Lula Holden Nan Louise Frizzell (1889) (1975) Lawrence C. Frizzell (1891) Walter D. Frizzell (1894) md. Bonnie Irene Bryson GRANDCHILD #25 - James Robert Frizzell James Robert Frizzell, born about 1854 to John Alexander and Nancy, married Martha Jane Bailey, born about 1863. This family lived in the Sylva area for a time, then moved to Japan (pronounced Jay-pan) in Graham County, then to the Flint Hill township of Fannin County. Georgia. Of nine children, only four 29 THE FAMILY OF JOHN ALEXANDER FRIZZELL AND NANCY MONTEITH lived to be adults. Their children: *~\ Thomas Frizzell (1886) md. Polly Hatley V_^ Robert H. Frizzell (1890) md. Martha Hedrick Maggie Frizzell (1894) md. John Richards John Alexander Frizzell (1903) md. (1) Vonna Lee Hall; (2) Grace Two of the infants were recorded in the Sylva papers in the 1890's, a set of twins who died soon after birth. GRANDCHILD #26 - S. J. Frizzell This little girl was alive in the I860 census but does not seem to have lived until 1870. Her name might well have been Sarah Jane. Since Thomas S. Monteith wrote in his 1867 letter that Nancy had four children living, this child possibly lived to be ten or twelve years old. GRANDCHILD #27 - A. T. Frizzell This little boy lived about five months, from about December of 1859 until April of 1860. He is listed in the 1860 mortality schedule. Name possibly Alexander? PROBLEMS IN THE JOHN ALEXANDER AND NANCY FRIZZELL FAMILY 1. Do the mortality schedule infants belong here in this family? Rick Frizzell, David Frizzell, and I all \^_^ believe they do. 2. Specific dates in all children's families. 3. Until Betty Cope Andrews pointed out that Nancy reported three of thirteen children living in 1900, I had given only the six above children as belonging to this family. «aa>t««ta«>«a««*»««»»««»*a*tit««t**«aaa>aaaaa»a»»tamaaati«a>tn>taaatt«aaa«*««««a>t**ttaatt« Did You Know? Did you know that in 1752, England adopted the Gregorian calendar? Parliament decreed that September 2, 1752, would be followed by September 14, 1752; thus everyone aged eleven days overnight. Herewith, a few genealogical maladies: Three Brothers Syndrome - Benign condition brought on by naivete, lack of experience. Not serious. Curable. V J Ermine Fever - The coat-of-arms folks. Not serious, and not my expression (Thanks, Doris Ward.). Curable by a few strong doses of common sense, reading a small number of history books. Horse thief hernia - Look in dictionary under inertia, laziness, lack of interest No known cure. Royalty fetish - See the library section on snobbery. Ancestors are invariably titled before they reach America. Same cure as ermine fever. Scandalitis - Researchers love the juicy stories, illegitimacies, skeletons. Cure: write eight thousand times, "Silence is golden." Truthonhobia - The complaint of the self-righteous, who could not possibly be wrong. Only known cure is not recommended by the editor, since it involves physical violence. Native-O-chondria - "My grandmother was an Indian princess." "My (ancestress) was (Cherokee, Shoshone, KwaikiutI, you choose)." Cure: none. Terminal condition. File under Ignorance, closed-mindedness. Skip-to-mv-flu - Feverish condition that leads to totally ignoring generations, dates, logic, and documentation. All persons with the same surname are kin. Cure: one gallon of castor oil. With forgiveness prayed for. » / Larry 32 JACKSON COUNTY DEATH CERTIFICATES 1925 L (Key: Name of deceased: spouse if given; 'date of birth: place or birth: date of death; father's name: father's place of birth: mother's name: ^ r mother's place of birth: informant; informant's address; cemetery; 'denotes that the given information is correct but is placed in the wrong book.) I had COxOn cancer in April, liver cancer in September, but by the grace of God and the prayers and care of many good friends, I am better. After 27 treatments of chemotherapy I am taking three weeks off, but5 my doctor tells me that I am responding well to the treatment. My thanks to all those who were thinking of me in those very bad times. Your calls and careds were appreciated very much. I looked out one morning before Christmas and up the walk came Roy Shuler with a fruit basket. I love fruit, but the best part was that Roy took the time to visit me. He has been back since and I enjoyed that, too--Ruth might have sent time; if that be the case, thank you, Ruth. I am told that Roy and Ruth will be traveling in the spring, an dl among others wish them the most pleasure in the world. They both deserve the best. I look forward to the day when I will be able to get out at night and enjoy some meetings.
