Vol TV, 9£o. 5-6 May-June, 1994 C President's Message I would like to start this letter by thanking Ruth Shuler for being so patient with me. Most women would wring my neck for putting these letters off for so long. Ruth just keeps rolling along--thank you, Ruth. (No apologies needed, Archie; X get slower by the day. RS) The papers have been full of stories about D-Day and thay make for good reading. I would have to say that I feel lucky not to have been a part of the landing. I was in the Air Corps on the other side of the world whan it happened. Z had finished school and was assigned to a B-24 crew to serve as replacement in the 7th Air Force. I was one of a ten-man crew and flew the top gun turret and operated the radio. We had spent time in California, Hawaii, and a chain of islands in the Carolines. Our island was vary small, but we were able to fly bombing missions to the Philippines, mainly the island of Luzon. We moved on to Okinawa in tha early spring and started our bombing missions on the southern islands of Japan, mainly Kyushu. Our main targets were rail yards and air fields. These missions lasted from five hours to six and a half and ware sort of sleepers because this was lata in the war and fighter opposition was all but eliminated. Then comes the big one. Our mission the next day was tha air depot and rail yards at Wusung, China. We were told that the area was defended second only to Tokyo, so we were real excited. The time was to total ten hours and thirty minutes, which would be coast to coast here in the states and return to starting place. Things have changed a lot. Briefing went off at 4:00 a.m. and take off at 5:30. The Catholic priest always stood on the runway and waved to us. Baptists just don't get out that early in the morning. We saw our first fighters about a third of the way to the target, but they were our own escort. They only flew with us for a while and had to refuel, but they were back juat before we reached the China coast. When they left us that time, we knew they ware gone for good. Everything was quiet until we were over the target and """' opened the bomb doors. This was what ~^J the enemy always looked for. They were low on ammunition by then and wouldn't waste any. We were looking at a solid wall of flak but most of it was a hundred feet below us. Japanese computers have improved in the last fifty years. We lost some of our bombers but our plane had a single hit in the cat walk and exploded with all of tha fragments going from inside the bomb bay through the sides. We counted 56 holes, but nobody was hurt. Thank God for that I The war was soon over and we took on 3100 gallons of fuel and headed for home. My last trip in the B-24 was from Honolulu to Mather Field in California. This flight was overnight and took 16 hours and 15 minutes. We had fuel to fly another 15 minutes and were more scared then than we were over Wusung, China. My memory is not really good enough to write this. I still have my flight —- record after all these years. D-Day _y survivors have a lot to celebrate, and so do some of us who went the other way. I thank God that many of us survived conflict on two sides of the world. Archie CAT.mroaB June 9, 1994 - 7:00 p.m. County Public Library Jackson Mr. J. R. Many died there, and it is possible that family members today are not aware that a cemetery at the hospital contains 1624 graves. The last burial took place in 1955, and it is interesting to note that only whites were interred in this cemetery. Records are sparse, but names and locations of graves are listed. Some additional information may be available for direct family members. While identity of all persons buried is known, only 1050 of the graves are marked, A suitable marker may be obtained for $12.50; however, these markers must be purchased by the hospital in lots of one hundred. At the time this information was obtained, the bank account for these purchases contained only S241; therefore, it will be some time before additional markers are purchased. Anyone who wishes to check the cemetery information or purchase a marker should get in touch with the hospital chaplain, Rev. Mr. King, who is usually in bis office Monday through Friday from 9-5. He is happy to talk with visitors and will help locate graves if he has no prior commitments. This cemetery may be a valuable research source for anyone who might have bad a family member die at Broughton Hospital. The death certificates are on file in Burke County. 52 FROM YOUR EDITOR: CEDAR GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH In the last issue of Journeys Through Jackson, I inquired about Cedar Grove Baptist Church, listed in (. the Tuckaseigee Associational minutes in the 1870's. Many of you will be interested in the reply I received from Mr. Lucius W. Allen, of Gray, GA: "The church was located at the mouth of Monteith Branch where the north end of the overpass now is located. It sat in a little field that is now totally obliterated by the highway. The walkway led to the church from the Monteith Branch road (at that time a private road, I believe). The walkway was lined on both sides with cedar trees. Long before I can remember the building had been converted to a barn, but the cedar trees were left standing. About 1920 my father cleared the field for cultivation and made fence posts of the trees. He was an artist with a pocket knife, so he carved a toy gun for me out of cedar wood. I wish I could say I still have it, but, alas, that was not to be. There was an old house there also. My parents lived there from 1915 to 1927. I, and all my siblings, were born there. My grandmother, Amanda Robinson Allen, had been born in the house in 1845, and it had not improved any with age. The house sat in the exact spot where the garbage dumpsters now sit I would say that is somewhat of a dubious monument to one's birthplace. As to why the church was built, I can only speculate. My grandfather, "Wibb" Allen, built it on his own land and retained title to' it, although he and his family remained members at Scotts Creek. My father joined Scotts Creek and was baptized May 3,1893, at age 13. My grandfather was sent by Scotts Creek to help organize Sylva Baptist Church and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees when land was bought for the church November 14, 1898. My theory about Cedar Grove is this. It was built to serve people west of Monteith Branch toward present day Sylva. As you know, at the time Scotts Creek Church was located at Old Field and the main road went that way to Webster. The mountains on both sides of Scotts Creek at the point between Fisher Creek and Monteith Branch ended at the water's edge and were solid rock. The first road past this point went up Fisher Creek through the gap near the present Phil Stovall home and down Monteith Branch. This route was used as a detour during road and bridge construction in 1922 and again in 1927. Before 1922 there had been a very narrow road at the water's edge, but it was not until 1922 that the road was made wide enough for-two wagons to pass at this point So people west of there were isolated. It would have been a long walk to Scotts Creek Church at Old Field anyway. After Sylva Baptist Church was built perhaps there was no further need for Cedar Grove." QUERIES " I read an article in the Skagit Valley Herald in Mount Vernon, Washington, in regards to people living in Skagit COtwty with ties to Jackson County. I have enclosed a list of relatives' names from both sides of my family. Some of this information is not complete. I would appreciate any information you can give to me. The list was placed into the chart format because of space considerations.) 53 WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JAMES H. FRIZZELL? James H. Frizzell has been a person of interest to the Frizzell family as long as the oldest family member ^^ can recall. James reputedly shot a man in self-defense and had to flee the area to avoid retribution by the man's relatives. All any member of our family could or would remember was that he had gone west and had returned once for a surreptitious visit in the dead of night As is often the case, family tradition supplied a starting point but also many false leads. As is also often true, truth is stranger than fiction. The following is the story of James based on records rather than rumor. James, the second son of Jason and Margaret Gribble Frizzell, was born in Little Savannah, then Macon, now Jackson, County, North Carolina, in 1835 (based on 1850, 1860, 1870 NC censuses). He was named for Margaret's brother, James Harrison Gribble. James was listed as a farmer in 1850. He married Rebecca Buchanan, daughter of George Buchanan'of Webster, on November 21,1855 (Jackson County marriage records). .James and family lived in Webster. The 1860 census lists two children. A son, William Harrison (Billy), was born 1858 and a daughter, Mary L., was born in July, 1860. James enlisted in Company B, 25th North Carolina troops on May 30, 1861, for three years or the duration of the Civil War. He was wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862, and was present or accounted for through February, 1864 (North Carolina Troops. Jordan). We believe he came home before the war ended, as his son, Samuel, was born in 1865 (1870 NC census). Following the war, James went into business. Various Jackson County court records show him charged with Retailing Without a License. Business license records in the North Carolina archives show James as licensed to sell spirituous liquor. (This was to lead to THE SHOOTING.) James and his brothers are also listed for various offenses including disturbing the peace and assault with a deadly weapon. James's troubles peaked in 1876. In recalling the family tradition, Ted Frizzell of Canton says a Mr. Buchanan came to James's place of business, bought a gallon of liquor, and returned later in the day, drunk. An argument ensued and as Buchanan went for his weapon, James shot him between the eyes with a derringer. Contrary to family tradition, James did not immediately flee, nor was it necessarily self-defense. The grand jury returned a "true bill" for murder. James's brother-in-law, Benjamin Buchanan, had been sheriff in 1870. Benjamin's father, William Buchanan, had been Registrar of Deeds (History of Jackson County). Apparently banking on this family influence, James's case was continued until the fall term of 1878 by which time he had fled - the county. A warrant of Alias Capias was issued for his arrest on October 16, 1878. Bill Wheeler, of Southwestern Community College's Law Technology Department, says this warrant meant James was assumed to have fled the area under an assumed name. James's family remained in the area, but his wife sold their property and left the area in 1878. The last court record for James was Spring Term 1879, an entry of Nol Pros with Leave—case dropped with option to reopen it if James returned to the county. At this point our out-of-state detective work began. Larry Crawford, Jackson County Genealogical Society member and cousin, suggested that rather than flee to totally unknown territory, James was more likely to join family members who had moved west earlier. James had uncles and cousins in Missouri, Oregon, and Colorado. Searches of these and other western states found no James Frizzells. However, Larry did find a James H. Gribble listed in the 1880 Colorado census. On this listing James gave Georgia and 1835 for birthdate, wife Rebecca was born 1838 in North Carolina, son Samuel born 1865, North Carolina, and daughter Mary born 186? . in North Carolina. (On the 1870 NC census Mary Frizzell's year of birth was listed as 1863 even though she i s 1^ included on the 1860 census.) Larry and I immediately saw the coincidence and slapped high fives in the middle 54 WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JAMES H. FRIZZELL (continued) C^ of the Federal Archives in Atlanta! At this point we began to contact Gribble family researchers in order to compare notes. Larry Meyer, of Matthews, North Carolina, believes James H. Gribble to be the son of Ezekiel, James Frizzell's uncle. Henrietta Caylor of Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, shared information collected by Russie Hastings of Lewiston, Idaho, which shed considerable light A November 3, 1881, newspaper article in the Huerfano Herald. La Veta, Colorado, states that James V. Gribble "dug potatoes for his cousin James H. Gribble on the Apishipa last week and obtained one that tipped the scales at five pounds. The potatoes were of the Peerless variety." The 1880 census listed John W. Gribble, father Ezekiel, and brother James V. Gribble. Since James H. cannot be the-son of Ezekiel, he must be the child of one of Ezekiel's brothers or sisters. Of the many offspring in that generation, only two, James H. Frizzell and James L. Gribble, fit the correct age and geographic location. James L. Gribble was the son of William Black and Rachael Frizzell Gribble (James Frizzell's double first cousin). Russie Hastings believes James of Colorado to be William and Rachael's son. This belief is based on - an interview with James's granddaughter Sally. This information gives James as the son of William Gribble and Rebecca as the daughter of William Ramsey and Margaret Stiles Buchanan. First-hand family knowledge is hard to refute, but we believe the above is incorrect for the following reasons. James Gribble, son of William, was born in Macon County, North Carolina, in 1833. His parents had moved to Macon by 1830 and-are listed on all Macon County census records through 1860. The marriage register L , for Macon'County lists the marriage of James L. Gribble to Mary C. Dills on January 12, 1860. Mary's family lived in the same community as the Gribbles. Thomas Gribble (son of William) signed James and Mary's marriage bond. Civil War records at the North Carolina archives show that James L. Gribble enlisted in Company D, 62nd North-Carolina Troops, on July 11, 1862. (All members of this company are listed as Macon County residents.) James was captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, on September 9,1863. He and several hundred other area prisoners were shipped to Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, where he died on September 21, 1864. His widow, Mary Gribble Ray, applied for a pension on July I, 1907. •Henrietta Caylor shared a copy of a letter Betty Cope Andrews of Niceville, Florida, had sent her. The letter, dated September 1867, was from Thomas Monteith to John Gribble of Oregon. John was a brother to Ezekiel, William, Margaret, and the other Gribbles of this area. He was married to Andrew Ensley's daughter, Elizabeth. Thomas was John's uncle (he was married to Sarah Gribble.) The letter states that William Gribble lost three sons and a son-in-law during the war to non-battlefield deaths. Additional information from Russie Hastings includes a death certificate for Samuel A. Gribble and a "Who's Who in Colorado" article. Samuel died in Bellingham, Washington, on February 15, 1949, at age 83. His parents are listed as James and Rebecca Buchanan Gribble. His birth is listed as March 23, 1865, Jackson County, North Carolina. The following summarizes the three views on the identity of James H. Gribble. Lj 1. Larry Meyer's view: James was the son of Ezekiel. This can't be. The 1880 Colorado census clearly lists both a James H. Gribble and a James V. Gribble. James V. is clearly listed as Ezekiel's son. 55 WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JAMES H. FRIZZELL (continaed) 2. Russie Hastings' view: I James was the son of William Black Gribble. The only James Gribble found in western North Carolina at that time was William's son, and family information also tends to agree. However, James L. Gribble of Macon County is well documented to have married Mary C. Dills and died in 1864. His marriage, residence in Macon County, and death in Chicago are all established beyond doubt The James Gribble who enlisted in Co. B, 62nd NC Troops, was a native of Macon County. The only question is, was James L. the son of William? As stated above, only William's son fits the known facts. Rebecca is listed as William and Margaret Buchanan's daughter. They are well documented in The Heritage of Jackson County. Volume I, and they had no daughter named Rebecca. The 1880 Colorado census gives North Carolina as the birth place for all of James's children. Samuel's "Who's Who" article specifically gives Jackson County. There are no North Carolina records to support this. 3. Frizzell family view: James Harrison Gribble of Colorado is the same person as James H. Frizzell of Jackson County, North Carolina. There are too many coincidences for them to be two different people. They were born the same year, married wives named Rebecca Buchanan (also born the same year), had children born the same years, in the same county, and named the same. James and Rebecca Frizzell lived in Jackson County. No records have been found linking James Gribble to Jackson County. On the contrary, the records link James Gribble firmly to Macon County. Sarah Hubbard of Gulfport, Florida, a descendant of William Gribble, recalls family members always saying, "Uncle James Gribble died during the Civil War." This is confirmed by several records. James H. Frizzell fled Jackson County after 1876 following a "True Bill" murder indictment and before a warrant of Alias Capias (Fall, 1878). James was Ezekiel. j Gribble's nephew. During the 1830's Ezekiel had owned land adjacent to Jason and Margaret Frizzell. What better identity could James assume than that of a dead double first cousin? What better area was there to flee to than Colorado where his uncle and cousins lived? I feel sure that James H. Frizzell of North Carolina is the same person as James Harrison Gribble of La Veta, Colorado. Rick Frizzell 'KJ 56 RESOURCES FOR CHEROKEE GENEALOGY (George E. Frizzell, Head of Special Collections in Western Carolina University's Hunter Library, has done extensive work on the Eastern t ^ Band of CheroKee Indians. He compiled and gave us permission to use the following list of readings and sources for research as an aid to our members who might be interested in Cherokee research. Some of this material is available in Hunter Library, and George is always willing to answer questions or provide help to those conducting such research.) The following suggested readings and sources for Cherokee Indian genealogical research are only recommendations, and this list makes no claim to being comprehensive. Some duplication exists within this list. For example, the 1835 census of the Cherokee Nation is available on microfilm from the National Archives; portions of that census have also been published by James Tyner as Those Who Cried.
