Vol 11% 5Vp. 10-11 Octo6er?<h(pvem6er, 1993 <^ Prssddanfsl Our November meeting was one of the best. Phil Haire did an excellent program on tha Ctvfl War. Too many of our group nijssed this interesting event. Phil had a nice selection of clothing, supplies, and weapons for us to look over. He has been involved in many re-enactments of Civil War battles all over the country. With the knowledge that many of our ancestors fought in the war, we are tempted to start digging in the books and searching out the cemeteries. If you weren't there, you mined a good program, and I'm sorry. Two hundred more Heritage books have been delivered and are now stored around waiting for the ones who were not able to give one last year. Dont make the mistake of waiting too long. We expect them to sell good from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Spread the word around and help us to keep everybody happy this year. The price remains at $84 local and $88 mailed. I am looking ahead to the December meeting. This is the time we reflect a little on the last year and make plans for the next one. It has been a good year, and I am proud to have been a part of the things that have happened. We should have a report from our nominating committee with our officers for the earning year. We win elect officers at this meeting and install them in January. I'm hist not ready for this Christmas yet. I believe it comes earlier every year. I can never get used to the big rush before Thanksgiving, but with two greatgrandchildren and a persistent wife, I have no choice. My wife and I are happy to have oar home on the tour for "C^uistmas in Webster* this year. This wfll be our second time and we are getting excited about that We were happy to have a visa from Sarah Sutton Madison this past week. Sarah's parents were Ralph and Eddie Marie Sutton. When we talk about them we go back a king way to Cullowhee and our early days there. We talked about the Wflceo on the river and the flood and then when things got back to normal we got to the Madisons, Annie Louise and Professor R. L. I used to walk home from school with Professor Madison and he always had a piece of Beechnut gum for me. We were great friends as long as he lived. I guess 111 always love to go over those days at Cullowhee. Ruth Shuler has triad to locate a different meeting place for our December meeting. Check out your Tourneys for notice on this. Make an extra effort to come and let's close the year with a good group. We may even have a little refreshment. See you then. She was bom November 4, 1887, near Beta in Jackson County, daughter of Ellis Worth Queen and Amy Lee Ensley. In the early 1890s her family moved to Black Mountain, where her father established the first mercantile store. She was married to Lewis Albert Tde" Daugherty, a veteran of the Spanish American War, in 1901. Her husband owned a store and home on Cherry Street and was the liTSt rural rnail earner, delivering the mail on horseback. He died in 1911. In 1917 s h e was married to Charles William Shumate, who bought a large trad of land and built the Home at Black Mountain where they lived for more than 80 years. After his death in 1962 Iva Shumate moved to her present home in Black Mountain, but the old homeplace with original buildings is still used by her family. On Saturday her daughter and son-in-law, Mae Daugherty Goolsby and Henry Clayton Goolsby, hosted a country dinner and birthday party at the old homeplace for members of the family. Guests, included two granddaughters, six gjeat-ojardcruldron, and seven great-great-grandcnfldren. In conjunction with the town of Black Mountain's cettfenrual celebration this year, Mrs. Shumate was invited to attend the charter banquet as an honor guest and was recognized as the town's oldest citizen. She rode in the Sourwood Festival centennial parade and waa featured in the recently published "History of Black Mountain." Mrs. Shumate is the oldest member of the First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, which her parents helped found. On her 100th birthday, everyone m town was invited to a reception in her honor at the Monte Vista HoteL The Jackson County Genealogical Society congratulates Mrs. Shumate on attaining this birthday and ^ / wishes her many more happy and healthy years. Marty of our members are related to Mrs. Shumate through the Queen and Ensley families. 91 SORTING AND SIFTING THROUGH THE CLAYTONS As I mentioned in THE JACKSON COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK, all of the Jackson County Claytons are descended from John and Elizabeth Clayton, nineteenth-century residents of the Mflls River section of Henderson County. Since the publication of our book, I have been lucky enough to gather a few more facts about this family. Luckily, this is one group who does not lack documentation, although I still haven't looked in all the right places to make everything fit together. Nor should I pretend to have done all of the work. There are various Clayton researchers in the South, most of them collateral cousins, and they have shown me ways to proceed or have named sources that gave me valuable help. The Bodche books on Southern families are important resources. Claytons are discussed in the seventh of these volumes and are brought into the western Piedmont section of North Carolina. In Rowan County in 1786, George Clayton left a will naming sons George and Lambert and daughters Henrietta (married Alexander Davidson), Rachel (rnarried John Falls), Margaret (married Robert Neill), Anna (married Thomas Cook), and Hannah (who received money from the estate). Another daughter appears to have been Rebecca, who married Robert Oliphant. The sons shown above were George and Lambert. Lambert Clayton (6/22/1788 - 7/12/1828) married Sarah Davidson and moved to Buncombe County in the area w e now know as Transylvania County. His family was well known, politically prominent, and is well documented in such books as TRANSYLVANIA BEGINNINGS. They are, however, not the same exact Clayton family who would later reside in Jackson County but, rather, their first cousins. Lambert Clayton's brother George stayed in the Piedmont, and his wul is probated in Iredell County in 1814, naming sons John, George, and Lambert and daughters Ruth, Sally, Catherine (Kerr), and Peggy Thompson Clayton. This will reveals a wealthy family, with hundreds of dollars to change hands, along with the usual household funuture, farm animals, and (for the sons) land. An mteresting codicil leaves the "waggon" to son John. The estate sale papers are also extant in this case. The basis for the confusion through the years has been that both Lambert and George Clayton, sons of the first George mentioned above, would name a son John. Larnbert's s on John was born in 1785, would marry Susan Wetzel in 1806, and lived a life of distinguished public service in Henderson and Transyfrania counties. George's son John was bom in 1788. They were first cousins and undoubtedly knew each other socially a s well because George's son John would also move to Buncombe County, to the Mills Rh^er section now in Henderson County. Add to the potential confusion by noting that the tales "Senior" and junior" connoted no father-eon relationship in the nineteenth century, and one finds John Clayton Sr. and John Clayton Jr. in official records of the Buncombe-Henderson ^y In March of 1993 I was able to find in Iredell records a land transaction that cleared the air considerably. John Clayton was acting in the interest of a brother-in-law with this transaction, which also named John's wife, "Elizabeth Clayton, formerly Elizabeth NeuL" Not only did the two Johns become separate in my mind, because Lambert's John had married Susan Wetzel, but also I now had found the maiden name of Mills River John's wife, my fourth great-grandmother. 92 U \ y * In the North Carolina State Archives in the estate records for Henderson County, one finds a treasure trove on John Clayton's estate. His death in 1887 had been carried by the Asheville newspapers, W so I knew that this man was the same one buried at Mills River Presbyterian Church. All of the estate docrumentation reveals a highly literate, well iiuormed man who was not wealthy, but who owned several hundred acres of land along the French Broad River. Now to add to the fun. John Clayton and his wife Elizabeth Neill were first cousins. I would not have been able to ascertain that fact, except that Martha Neill Barnwell of Mountain Home is also a "double-dipped" Clayton. She knew that her gzeat-great-grandparents were also first cousins, one the son ofMargaret Clayton Neill, his wife a daughter of Lambert Clayton.- By comparing the names on the Iredell land transaction. I found that her gnaat-graat grandfather wan « ynrnigar himthmr ntRligaVmrtli Tftaffl rqaytpn By literally placing two and two together, one can conclude that Elizabeth Neill was^the first cousin of her husband John Clayton. John Clayton (2/05/1788 -12/17/1857) m. Elizabeth Neill (b. abt 1790 - d. after 1860) Children (eight mentioned in estate documents as heirs): Robert (9/17/1812 - ?) married 10/28/1838 Sarah Anderson Margaret (abt 1818) married J. P. Lytle George W. (10/18/1816 -11/08/1900), married 1/09/1840 Arta Bryson James F. (ordinal position my estimate) Samuel Harrison (abt 1828) married Matilda Finch, Axhlmda Bradley Alfred (abt 1828) married 8/31/1881 Mary A. Ward W Calvin C. (abt 1829) married 11/29/1888 Sabrina Bradley Harriet Elizabeth (abt 1833) married Benjamin Becknell The family of John and Elizabeth Neill Clayton married and dispersed like all large nineteenth-century families. Robert moved first to Alabama, then to Mississippi; h e and Sarah reared a famfly of eight children. Margaret and J. P. Lytle bought the real interest of John Clayton's estate from] several of her siblings, and it was with this family that Elizabeth lived at the time of the 1860 census. I do not know where this family moved after that, but I would consider McDowell County a possibility, since Lytle is a numerous surname there. '* George married andUvedm Jackson County. He and Artie Elvira Bryson reared a large family at Addie, and they are enumerated in our HERITAGE BOOK. Their third daughter was my great-great-grandrftother, Adelaide Clayton Crawford. James F. might b e the blacksmith shown a s 29 years of a g e m the 1850 Henderson County census. With him are a wife Catherine and children John, Daniel, Harriet, and Susan. Samuel Harrison Clayton did not live in Jackson County (he stayed in Henderson), but his son ^ George Perry Clayton did live here and is buried at OW Field Cemetery. The Claytons in Cullowhee and those in DOlsboro are descended from Samuel Harrison Clayton. 93 I have not done adequate research to know anything much about the other three children. What are some of the unanswered questions about this family? Where is Elizabeth Neill Clayton ^y buried? What happened to her daughters? What is the relationship, if any, to the Claytons found in the 1850 Macon County census, families who list their birthplace a s Person County? What is the connection to Clayton, Georgia? One can s e e that I still have a "a heap" of work to do on this family, but like all amateur genealogists, I always believe that the missing link is to be found in the next deed book, the recovered Bible page, the undiscovered cemetery, or the next genealogy trip. Credit is due many individuals for this work. First, Mrs. Shirley Brittain Cawyer of Stephenville, Texas, shared her list of Clayton researchers with me. This l ed to correspondence with Mrs. VirginiaS. Green of Tampa, Florida, who sent me the Boddie material, along with married names of Clayton daughters in the first two generations. Mrs. Peggy Neill of Pharr, Texas, sent me her Neul generations. I have quoted from Mrs. Elizabeth Peek Crutchfield's work, and I have greatly enjoyed a letter-and-telephone correspondence with Mrs. Huliard Harper in Greenwood, Mississippi, who has supplied all of the Robert Clayton data. Notice the social occasions mentioned, the weather report the economic conditions, the caring for elderly relatives, and the medical news. Before the telephone came to Jackson County, letters provided the best means of comnumication with families who lived m omer comrnunities. I look forward to receiving other examples such as these. Thanks to Sue Nations for sharing with all of us. 108 ^y QUERIES There was a picture taken-Sept. 18, 1913, of the unveiling of the Confederate Veterans Monument at Sylva. THIS *N THAT FROM YOUR EDITOR Apologies for b e i n g s o s l ow with this issue. Archie was ncj wrong when h e s a id something about not having time. It's b e e n a hectic fall in lots of ways and time has run out before everything got done; at least on time. But with a husband who's n ow retired (as of September 30) and after a short vacation trip to northwest Washington to celebrate and, of course, to d o s o m e genealogy, I'll get back on schedule. The next issue will b e a double one, s o s e n d your material now for use in the October-November issue. Thanks for your patience!
