  • c ^ J o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c l ^ s o n c The OfficialJournalof"the Jackgon County genealogical Society, Inc. Vol 111, 9jp. 7-8 July-August, 1993 President's Message I would like to start out by telling you that we had a wonderful time at the picnic. He had a good crowd on hand and the food was plentiful. Roy Shuler, with the help of Harry Vance and David Frizzell, did the cooking on the grill and our members supplied green and baked beans, potato salad, fresh corn, tomatoes, and cakes, pies, and pudding. It was enough to feed a small army. The weather was good with just a sprinkle at the end. Harry Vance led our group in prayer before we ate, and he lit a spark in my heat (preachers have a way of doing that to me). He said that our heritage was a gift from God and that we should give thanks for that and we should handle it with care and pass it on to future generations. Being a Christian myself, I really appreciated this thought expressed in his prayer. Thank you, Harry, for being there. Thanks also to all who brought so much good food. The July meeting was a joy to me also. We saw a number of old photos and were able to identify many of the people in them. X had taken some real old ones and found that Willa Mae Scroggs had the same set and she knew a lot of the people in the pictures. One of them was a group picture at graduation in Sylva and the tallest of the group was A. J. Dills, Willa Mae's father. I was surprised to see a picture of Sylva Baptist Church that dated before the church was built where the Sylva Post Office now stands. The best part of this meeting was that JoAnn Smith from Raleigh was kind enough to share an old picture made in 1904. Xt appears to have been the whole school because of the difference in size of the ones shown. My daddy, Wiley Crawford, was in the second row seated next to Glenn Hughes. Other people in the pictures Annie Louise Madison, Bd Bryson, Charlie Keller, Johnny long, Berder Long, and Lem and Will Norton. X knew all of these people when X was growing up in Cullowhee. Bill Crawford has given to the society two books: "The Robert Lee Holden Family'* by Mary Katherine Sherrill Robinson and "Facts and Fancies, Tales and Traditions of the Sherrill Family," published by Will Sherrill Sr. in the late 1940's. It wasK reprinted by his grandchildren in 199? I find both of these books to be most-^ interesting because of the part these people played in the history of Sylva and Cullowhee. Speedwell would have never made it except for the Holdens, and I'm sure Sylva will always remember the Sherrill family. Both of these books will be made available to the members as soon as we have worked out a system that will keep us aware of their location at all times. They are the property of JCGS and we need to take care of them. Thank you, Bill, for these books. Jackson County Heritage books are still moving. Orders come by mail and are filled along with those people attending reunions and purchasing copies. Copies are still available. Our next meeting will be the second Thursday in September—September 9— and we meet back at the Episcopal church in Sylva at seven o'clock. We have arranged an interesting program for each meeting the rest of the year. If you— have been coming, we will be glad to se j you; and if you have not, we will be happy to welcome you back. Looking forward to having a good number in attendance next meeting. Archie CALENDAR September 9, 7:00 p.m., regular Society meeting, St. John's Episcopal Church, Sylva. Duane Oliver will present the program on Cades Cove. September 18, OBCGS Workshop, information on page 78. See October 14, 7t00 p.m., regular Society meeting, St. John's, Sylva. He thought it would be interesting to our aeabers, and so we print it here for your enjoyment. To stake the story funnier, as the gentleaen left the archives building, the wind caught his handful of papers and blew thea all over a Richaond street. While gathering up the papers, he looked up to see a tow truck hauling away his car which he had unknowingly parked in the wrong place. So, to these rules, add soaething about securing papers and parking properly.) The document containing evidence of the aissing link in your research invariably will be lost due to flood, fire, or war. The keeper of the records you need will have just been insulted by another genealogist. Your great-great-grandfather's obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record. The town clerk you wrote to in desperation and finally convinced to give you the information you need can't write legibly and doesn't have a copying aachine. The will you need is in the safe on board the "Titanic." Tha spelling of your European ancestor's naae bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation. That ancient photograph of four relatives, one of whoa is your progenitor, carries the naaes of the other three. Copies of old newspapers have holes which occur only on last naaes. ^_J No one in your faaily tree ever did anything noteworthy, always rented property, was never sued, and was never naaed in wills. You learned that Great-Aunt Matilda's executor just sold her life's collection of faaily genealogical aaterials to a flea market dealer "soaewhere in New York City." Yours is the only naae not found aaong the three billion in the world-famous Mormon archives in Salt Lake City. Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. The 37-voluae, 16,000-page history of your county of origin isn't indexed. The critical link in your faaily tree is naaed "Smith." Ky 80
