Vol 111, <h(p. 4 Aprit 1993 PHKaiDKNTB MESSAGE The blizzard of '93 is Just a memory now, but for those who live away from here, it was one bad time. Snow was 18 to 24 inches everywhere. Jack Fanner, with the State Forest Service, told me that he was in a drift in Haywood Co. that measured 20 feet. Power and telephone lines were out for days in many locations. These bad times bring out the best in many people and this was no exception. Many people worked around the clock to restore service. I'm glad that it's behind us and we can look ahead to spring. Dorris Beck and her husband Sam are getting over some real problems with Sam's health. They are charter members of JCGS and Dorris is presently filling the office of secretary. Dorris is that person who win do those things that nobody else has time to do. She worked hard on the Heritage Book, but that was to be expected. She told us at church on Sunday that five weeks ago Sam was taken by helicopter to Asheville. He had his bypass and is doing good. Dorris and Sam would like to thank each of you for your thoughts and prayers during this critical time. Dorris was raised in Cullowhee and I well remember her family. Her Dad was Jesse Dills, and he worked at Western Carolina Teacher's College (now WCU). There were then, as now, people who were better off than others. Jesse would keep wood crates from work and use them to kindle fires. He would give me pieces of soft pine and I would make sling shot prongs out of them. Dogwood was fine, but this soft pine was the Cadillac of sling shot prongs. Every boy in Cullowhee carried a sling shot in the early 1930's. So much for Dorris Beck. I never intended to say so much about her. Larry Crawford, at our March meeting, proposed that we have a picture ideritification meeting, at which time anyone could bring old photos to be looked over by the membership and old timers that we would invite. I heartily agree with Larry, because there are so many old pictures around that no one can identify. I would like to see this done as soon as it warms up a little. Let's plan this by asking some old timers to come and meet with us. We could even provide transportation for them. Good idea, Larry. Let's keep it alive while these old timers are stUl around. We expect the Heritage books any day now. Let me use this letter to encourage you to place your order now and tell those friends who missed the first printing to place their orders. There were many people who were disappointed because they waited too long I order. Let's not make the same mistake again. We will sell out again for sure. Place your order now and tell your friends to do likewise. We are happy to welcome Ruth and Roy Shuler back from Germany. We are anxious to hear what she has to tell us. I'm sure that she wul be well prepared. She always is. She was missed by everyone at our last meeting. Let me say again: PLACE TOUR ORDERS NOW FOR JACKSON COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK. They will be here any day now. Don't keep the skeletons in your family history under cover. Somebody else may need that link to complete their search. Archie CALENDAR For the next two regular Society meetings, we have a special treat in store. Barbara Dooley, an accomplished genealogist, will present the May and June programs. On May 13, at 7*00 pjtL, Barbara will discuss 'How to „ find out where in Europe your ancestors started from. , Then, on June B, 7*00 pja, she win describe her search for two famlUflfl in Germany. Among these certificates are three World War I soldiers killed in 1918 and reinterred in Jackson County in 1921. Several of the deceased are lineal ancestors of our society members and, in one case, two Mountain Township aged brothers who apparently died on the same day. The certificates are the usual mix of white, red, and black persons, but with an unusual number of certificates from the Qualla Township. An asterisk (*) denotes known errors committed by the informant or registrar; (") denotes a certificate from the wrong year filed in the 1921 book. In numerous cases, no particular cemetery is listed, only the community or county. Would it profit any of our researchers to note the race of the deceased? Native American names are usually (but not always) distinct; black and white are indistinguishable. Should this fact also be noted, or is it better to leave a sensitive issue alone? Comments appreciated.
