  • J o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c / ( s o n The Official Journal of the Jackson County genealogical Society, Inc. Vol 111, 9io. 3 March, 1993 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Let's start out with some evidence that Jackson County Genealogical Society is doing the work that it was organized to do, that is, to put people in touch' with other people who may know more about ancestors than - we ever dreamed. David Stiles, from Englewood, TN, paid his dues for 1993 and wrote the following: "I enjoyed reading the December and January issues of Tournevs Through Tackson. 1 appreciate JCGS for including the Dills cemetery information about my Stiles ancestor and for listing my name and address in the January issue. Because of this listing, I was able to hear from a cousin in Oregon named Betty Luedtke. She recently joined JCGS and she sent me some valuable family information." Thank you, David, for your letter and your check. This is what our society is all about. Last month's meeting was a joy to me. We had a good crowd and everybody visiting with one another and exchanging stories. Some were true and some maybe less true than others. I missed Bill Crawford. I don't think he has missed before. Come on, Bill, you nominated the new officers. Seriously, you missed a chance to talk to some people from Raleigh. You best not miss again. Book orders are coming in along with membership dues. Seven book orders came in last week as well as four renewals. Michael Wood, from Wellington, OH, wrote to say that he had sent his copy of Jackson County Heritage to his aunt who is in her late eighties and came from Caney Fork. He must really love her to give up his only copy. He has ordered another copy for himself. He said, 'Please hurry as I am lost without my book.* We will hurry every chance we get. I agree with Lloyd Cowan that more writing could have been about the black churches in the area. I just happened to run into Joe Smith last week and was tokjL that he still feels good enough to talk with us part of the time. I guess we will have to load up with Lloyd and a tape recorder and call on Joe. This would be good for work on Volume II. It has been mentioned a time or two. Plans are being made for a Western North Carolina Genealogical workshop to be held at Lambuth Inn at Lake Junaluska on Saturday, May 22. The workshop will consist of five, one-hour lectures on a number of topics. We will send a list of our members to the Haywood County Society and they will in turn, mail brochures to the members here. We need to make plans to attend when we have the details and registration information. We need to wish Ruth Shuler well on her trip. If she is not hijacked she will be in Germany as we hold our March meeting. I donl know how she will manage without any old family records to look through. I told her on the phone that we might just hold off on our meeting until she gets back. You know Ruth, she Just said, 'No, no, you go right ahead.* So we will, Ruth. You have fun. It .was said of a Baptist preacher one time, "When he is finished, he ought to shut up." I have shut up for now. The second printing of Tackson County Heritage. Volume I. is now on order with the publisher. We expect books to arrive around April I. Price is 554 If picked up locally, $58 if shipped. Thanks, Archie, for your good wishes. But what I didn't tell you was that I am taking the old records along with me! Well be trying to find the locations where the Shuler ancestors lived in Switzerland and Germany before heading to "Amerika" (South Carolina) in 1737. If we are successful, we'll bring pictures and tell you all about il-probably more than you want lo hear. Have a good meeting on March 11. Taylor Hampton, was born March 25, 1917, in Asheville NC| educated in NC, PA, SC, and graduated from Southeastern High School in Detroit, MI, in the early 1930s. He worked in the auto factories, participated in the Michigan National Guard, and left Detroit in 1935 to attend WCTC in Cullowhee NC. Gray was a popular person on campus, active in several sports, a member of the Monogram Club, and editor of the 1939 yearbook. -The blond, blue-eyed man worked in the bookstore and at other jobs to attain a BS in Education in 4939. White there he mat and married Jeanne York of Canton NC. They moved to the Charlotte NC area * where Gray had a teaching/coaching position at the Harrisburg High School. They were divorced in June 1941 prior to his enlistment-in the Army Air Corps. They had no children. •eW Gray was thrilled to become a pilot. He had basic training at Arledge Field, Stamford, Texas, where he was named captain of his cadet class and selected by his officers as typical. He was in the Class 42-D, Company A. His picture was widely circulated in the national press and in Army Air Corps publicity releases at its — "typical flying cadet." He then was stationed at Mills Field, CA, to complete P-38 fighter plane instruction needed prior to being sent overseas. His plane crashed and burned during take-off for his final training flight on 25 May, 1942; and he was killed. The weekend previously, Gray had gone to Gilroy, CA, to visit with brother McLean and family. "Mac" heard of the crash "from a radio news broadcast, and he and Rose went to the site where they maintained a vigil until Gray's body was recovered. McLean was named as honor guard and accompanied his brother's remains to the Detroit area for full military services. Gray is buried at White Chapel Memorial Park, near Birmingham, MI. The entire family was devastated as were many of the relatives and college friends who had known the handsome, funloving man. He was the first graduate of WCTC to be killed in WWII and is honored with several others by a memorial marker on the WCU campus. ****************************************************** '•Queries My great-grandmother was Martha Lucy Clements b. 1845. PRIOR TO 1900 (Abstracted from records in Jackson County Register of Deeds Office) •..__ Volume VTI for Year 1921 . The-1921 death cartlflcataa for Jackson County are Interesting for aeveral different reasons. Among theae certlflcatea are three World War I aoldlera killed in 1918 and relnterred in Jackaon County In 1921. Several of the deceaaed are lineal anceetore of our society members and, In one case, two Mountain Township aged brothers who apparently died on the same day. The certlflcatea are the usual mix of white, red, and black peraona, but with an unuaual number of certificates from the Qualla Township. An asterisk <*) denotes known errors committed by the informant or registrar, (A) denotes a certificate from the wrong year filed in the 1921 book. In numerous cases, no particular cemetery is listed, only the community or .county. Would it profit any of our researchers to note the race of the deceased? Native American names are usually (but not alwaya) distinct; black and white are indistinguishable. Should this fact also be noted; or is it better to leave a sensitive issue alone? D. McRorie, in his column entitled "Knowing Jackson. about the pstition to form Jackaon County. The following material is printed with Mr. McRorie's petirdeaton. A Memorial was filed with the North Carolina General Assembly on December 10, 1830, for a new county to be formed from Haywood and Macon, to be called Jackson. 4 One definition for "memorial," given in the dictionary, is 'a statement of facts addressed to a government often accompanied with a petition or remonstrance.* In the case at hand, over 300 persons then residing in Haywood and Macon counties signed the petition asking the new County of Jackson be formed. Most ofthem, of course, lived within the bounds of the proposed new county. But not alL When William Welch signed, he wrote "Waynesville" in beside his name. The Memorial was the first 'official' step in the formation of Jackson county. The original Memorial is in the NC Department of Archives and History in Raleigh among the records of the General Assembly....The Memorial is as follows: 'To the Honorable General Assembly of the State of North Carolina 'The undersigned Citizens of the Counties of Haywood and Macon and State aforesaid Respectfully Present that the great inconveniences arising from their immense distances to the County Towns as well as the difficulty of attending the same from the Roughness of the Road and the expense in attending there from that a portion of the aforesaid Counties be formed into a new County to be cauld (sic) Jackson Bounded as follows Commencing at Scotts summit where the State Road now crosses thence with the Ridge that divides the waters' of the Pigeon and Tuckaseega (sic) Rivers to the Haywood and Henderson lines thence with said line far enough to include WQliam Bame's thence to the top of the Fodderstack Mountain thence with said top to the top of the White Side Mountain thence with the top of the Cowee Mountain to the State Road thence with said Top to the Tuckaseega River oppositeC the mouth of Forneys Creek thence up the 1st leading Ridge below the mouth of said creek to the Top of the Smoky ™ Mountains on the Tennessee line thence with said top to the top of the Cattaloochy Mountains thence with the leading Ridge to the Soco gap where the Road Crosses thence with said Ridge to the top of the Balsam Mountain thence with said top to the beginning at the State Road.' _ It perhaps should be noted that when the Memorial mentioned 'County Towns,' the reference was to the county seats-Waynesvflle and Franklin. There was, of course, no Webster at that time. An 18-acre tract was purchased for the County Town in Jackson-Webster-in June, 1853. The petitioning names on the Memorial are truly a Who's Who of prominent pioneer families in Jackson County. It is difficult to read many of the more than 300 signatures on the petition (Ed. note: a copy of which was received by Mr. McRorie). Numbers were written in, by which the signers wrote their signatures.. At least two of the numbers in the sequence, which goes to 28^, were omitted, or there are fewer names than 280 with numbers. On the copy received by this column, the number sequence skips numbers and names in several places, obviously where pages overlapped in making the copy. With question marks indicating real doubt, the readable names on the petition, as they appear in the numbered sequence, followed by those not numbered, are: Wm. B. Love John R. Dills Colman Bryson W.
