  • Journeys Through Jackson is the official journal of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. The journal issues in this digital collection are presented as annual compilations.
  • c c j o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c k s o n The Official Journal of the Jackson County genealogical Society, Inc. Vol HI, <Ho. 2 February, 1993 L President's Hessage This begins a new year for our society and brings out new officers, along with a lot of anxiety about what the future holds. We need only to look back to see what lies ahead, because the people who did such an outstanding job in our past are still among us. I could not say enough about them, so I will just thank Ruth Shuler, Henry Buchanan, Carolyn Johnson, David Frizzell, Larry Crawford, and Kirk Stephens. This is not to say that they are finished because the increase in membership will bring about a need that only they could handle. We will rely heavily on them to help make this a good year. Financially, our society is on solid footing. Our year-end report quoted in January "Journeys" indicated that even though our profit on the book was small, our increase in memberships was enough to give us a good balance to begin the new year. We have received in the mail this week three memberships and orders for three books. This should bring our book sales to about fifty-five. We look forward to placing an order now, but the real selling must start now in order to pay for them when they are ready. I have faith in the members who worked so hard selling the first ones. You know who you are. Let's do it again. We plan to have a board of directors meeting in a week or ten days here at our house. We will enjoy some coffee and sweetbread while we do the business and make the plans needed to keep our organization strong and growing. We will enjoy sharing our old house with the officers involved. We have a number of programs proposed for this year. Thanks to Ruth Shuler and others who planned these things ahead. It has been my experience to have all sorts of interesting programs in civic clubs, but I find that those presented by the members are the best. So, this is advance notice to you, the members, that we will call on you. You are better qualified to speak to us on genealogy than any other speaker. Besides that, we understand each other. Here's hoping for a year of fun and accomplishments as we work together. Archie Calendar March 11. regular Society meeting, St. John's Episcopal Church, 7i00 p •&• April 8, regular Society meeting, St. John's Episcopal Church, 7l00 p.m. May 13, regular Society meeting, St. John's Episcopal Church, 7i00 p.m. May 22, workshop at Lake Junaluska sponsored by all western North Carolina genealogical societies. More information will be forthcoming soon, but let's have a good representation from Jackson there. * * * * * * * * Looking aheadi a member has suggested that we do a series of articles on Jackson County service members who lost their lives in support of our country. We will begin this feature in the March issue and invite you to submit material co honor these individuals. Another member has asked: Would the oldest churches of Jackson County allow a Society member to extract data of genealogical interest (deaths, marriages, child of , to prove lineage) from church records to print in JCGS? Please check with your church on this request and let me know. A project like this could turn up valuable information that is not available anywhere else. In this issue we are beginning to use a dating system which prevents confusion in reading dates. The day will be written in numerals followed by the abbreviation of the month and then the year in numerals, for example, lOFeb 1993. Zero will be used in front of single digits, i.e., 09Feb 1993. We hope this information will be useful as you submit material for publication in "Journeys."
