  • V - ^ J o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c / ( s o n v _ The Official Journal of the J aclqon County genealogical Society, Inc. Vol 11, 9£o. 12 <Decem6er, 1992 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE As I begin this, my last message to you as your president, I am astonished at how fast time has flown. The past two years have indeed had wings and have passed so rapidly; at the same time, they have been two of the most gratifying years of my life. When I consider the progress we have made in the activities of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, I am truly impressed by the "can-do" attitude of you, our members. You have my utmost admiration and appreciation for the cooperation you have given to me and to our other officers, and I look forward to our continuing association in the years ahead. Membership has continued to grow throughout the year and now stands at a total of 125, an increase of 21, or 17 percent over last year. This issue of JOURNEYS THROUGH JACKSON contains a complete membership list along with the names of families the member is researching or is interested in. I urge you to contact other members who have the same research interests as yours-- you may discover a treasure in your research. Remember that this is the time to renew your membership dues; several have already done so. The December issue is supposed to contain an index of the previous issues of Volume II, but, because of computer problems, the index is not yet complete. It will be mailed to you. The members of our Book Committee have indeed been busy people, as you will see by the committee report contained elsewhere in this issue. To each of them, my special appreciation for making possible a volume like JACKSON COUNTY HERITAGE. The comments about this book have been numerous, and I want to quote from just a couple: ""You kids' have done a wonderful job..." (from Willa Mae Scroggs, who taught some of us at old Sylva High School); "The book has helped me know about my family and about where we came from..." (from Ken Deitz, who lives in California); "I read 'til two o'clock in the morning, laughed a while, cried a while, then read some more..." (from Linda Burchell, who lives in Kentucky); and so many have said, "I couldn't put it down..." Comments like these make all the hours of work worthwhile. See the committee's report for information about a second printing and for order blanks, and then respond with your usual determination and good will. A listing of names and addresses of all submitters to the book has been compiled and is available for $1.50, which covers cost of duplicating and mailing. I want to express to my fellow officers my heartfelt thanks: to Henry, for his work on the cemetery project and anything else requested of him; to Carolyn, for her secretarial skills and her willingness to help wherever needed; to David, for his meticulous accounting for our money; to Kirk, for initiating and setting the standard for JOURNEYS; and to Larry, for picking up where Kirk had to leave off. All of you have made my job easier, and I admire and respect your dedication. Thanks, friends I May I now wish for each of you a happy holiday season and a new year in which you find that ancestor who has eluded you, you locate the family Bible that has been lost for generations, you make contact with a long-lost cousin. And, of course, you continue to support Jackson County Genealogical Society! Best wishes for all your endeavors 1 Ruth Shuler CALENDAR Regular Society meeting, January 14, 7:00 p.m. Regular Society meeting, February 11, 7:00 p.m. y c JACKSON COUNTY GEH1ALOGICAL SOCIETY, INC. 1992 Membership List (including Families of Interest) Mrs. Robert A.
