Vol 11, <Ko. 9 Septem6er, 1992 PBSSIDEHT'S MESSAGE Fall is approaching, and we look forward to clear, cool days when we can see forever in this mountain home of ours. Memories of making molasses, apple butter, "bleached fruit," and other such delicacies always come to my mind when September arrives. Too, I remember the reunions which helped to keep families close and passed along the traditions of the years. Many genealogists became interested in family roots as young children listening to tales of the past, and many of us wish we had listened more and remembered better. It is so important now that we try to keep these memories from fading forever; I encourage each of you to write for your descendants your memories of earlier days. What reading that will make 50 years from now! We are waiting eagerly and anxiously for delivery of Jackson County Heritage. It is due any day now. Remember that we will be using Dr. Ralph Morgan's office behind Massie Furniture Company in Sylva for local pick-up. Watch the Sylva Harald or listen to WRGC for details beginning soon. It is with great regret that we inform you of Kirk Stephens' request to be relieved of the editorship of Journeys. Kirk's responsibilities as a faculty member at Southwestern Community College as well as their computer expert have been time-consuming and strenuous, and while we understand his wishes and will accede to his request, we do so with sorrow. Kirk has provided a journal we can be proud of, and we appreciate so very much all he did to initiate our monthly publication and to make it a model of its kind. Thanks, Kirk; you have our very best wishes in all that you undertake in the future. To keep Journeys running for the rest •of this year, Larry Crawford has agreed to assume the editorship, and numerous ones have agreed to help. We ask for your help in submitting material to be used; especially needed are Bible records, obituaries from old church records, other material that may have never been published or from old books and records. Your submissions should be mailed to Editor, Box 2108, Cullowhee NC 28723. We particularly encourage our members who live at a distance to send their articles. Calendar October 8, Society meeting, 7:00 p.m., St. John's in Sylva. We will have a workshop on how to conduct a cemetery census. If you have a complete census of any county cemetery, please bring it along so we can see what progress we are making. Also, we would ask that people in the various communities be aware of all cemeteries in your community; some small family cemeteries may not be well known. Hovember 12, Society meeting, 7*00 p.m. ( program plans not yet complete. December 10, Society Annual Meeting, 7i00 p.m. Did you know... East La Porte, meaning "Eastern Gate," formerly located in the bend of the river just below the College, within one-half mile of Cullowhee and on the way to Sylva, was an old-time trading station founded by the Huguenots on the white man's side of the Meigs and Freeman line. At Maple Springs, two miles east of Sylva, on Federal Road 19, is the site of Foster's Trading Station; at a point one mile south of Sylva on Highway 106 was located Love's Trading Station. They have been married now for seventy-two years. They know so much about our county and its people because they have lived here and opened their home to generations. They are the epitome of friendly and generous neighbors, always with a gift from the garden and a sincere question about the condition of the neighborhood residents. Harley Powell was born September 20, 1900, at Tuckasegee to John Webster and Lizzie White Powell. This was a family of two girls and six boys. Harley went to school at a one-teacher school at Big Ridge and, like other boys of his age, started working early in life. He well remembers $1 a day for wages and, like so many Jackson Countians, started his work in timber. As the years progressed, Harley Powell would work in highway construction, serving as the foreman on road projects in several areas. During World War II, he moved his family to Oak Ridge to work in the defense effort. He later became a merchant in Asheville, then retired as the owner of the store in Tuckasegee that we know as Ken's Grocery. Flora Belle was born in Jackson County May 22, 1899, to Jefferson Davis and Fannie Dills Mathis. She relates that her father's mother, Haseltine Mathis, moved here from Tennessee when her husband John was killed in "The Old War." How memorable to hear that bloody conflict referred to in the way that so many mountain people said it. She also grew up in a family of eight children, and she says that she worked all of her life, using a tone of voice that indicates that she believes everyone should do just that. Flora Belle Mathis Powell married Harley 72 years ago in Greenville, South Carolina. She is the mother of seven children, five of whom are living, and she tells proudly of her 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great- grandchildren . Neither of the Powells will hesitate to tell a visitor that people in the past ware better to each other, more neighborly, and more honest. They appreciate the fact that people have so much more today, but they also would rather see people with the type of character from the "days back yonder." Although Mr. Powell's hearing is not what it once was, and Mrs. Powell's eyesight has failed, one is always welcome to stop in on the front porch, sit down, and talk a while. Is this not how it is supposed to be for everyone? Can all of us learn from the wisdom of years? I believe so. Thank you, Mr. Powell, for the twinkle in your eye as you say something funny, and thank you, Mrs. Powell, for your keen insights toward both history and modern life. I am privileged to be your neighbor. (Interviewed by Larry Crawford, August, 1992.) 92-83 Family Bible of William Riley and Dorcas Dillard Franklin (New York: Printed by D. Fanshaw for the American Bible Society, 1844) j This Bible is in the possession of Louise Bumgarner Norman, a great-granddaughter of W. R. and Dorcas Franklin. Lewie SMITHS On January 2, 1992, I began writing a book about Revolutionary soldier Lewis SMITH and his descendants. Lewis Smith was born in 1763 in Lancaster County PA. By 1781 he was living in Augusta County VA at which time he enlisted in the Army of the Revolution, by 1790 Lewis Smith had come to Rutherford County. He married Mary WIKLE in 1791. He obtained land on Richland Creek in 1792 in Buncombe (now Haywood) County and lived there until his death. In 1842 he went to market at Charleston SC and died on the trip home. In order that I may include in my book as many descendants of lewis Smith as possible, I will appreciate hearing from anyone interested in this family. Write Mrs. H. A. (Jo Ann) Smith, P. 0.
