Vol 1% O^os. 8 August, 1992 President's Message The summer marches on and schooldays are upon us again. I hope each of you has had an opportunity for some rest and relaxation and that you have been able to pursue genealogical research to your heart's content during these past weeks. Let us know if you made a significant discovery. Jackson County Heritage is on schedule for delivery around October 1! As time draws nearer, I get more and more excited and I believe you will, too, when you have this volume in your hands. For local pick-up, we will be using Dr. Ralph Morgan's office at Spring and Jackson Streets in Sylva. Watch the Svlva Herald or listen to WRGC for details beginning about the first of October. For those who asked for the book to be shipped, this shipment will be made directly by the publisher. Societies in our neighboring counties are involved in many projects. The Old Buncombe Society is moving to a new location in the Innsbruck Mall on Tunnel Road, giving them larger quarters. This move takes place as of September 1. The OBCGS will sponsor a workshop on Sept. 19 entitled "Using Land Records in Genealogical Research." Pre-registration of $20 covers the workshop and lunch and will be open until September 12. For more information contact OBCGS, P. O. Box 2122, Asheville NC 28802 or call (704) 253- 1894, Monday through Friday, 9-5. The Haywood County Society is taking pre-publication orders for Haywood Homes and History through October 30, 1992. Additional information may be received by writing to HCGS, Inc., 201 Hodges Drive, Waynesville NC 28786. u Our membership continues to grow, with the total now standing at 119. I want to call your attention to one of our newest members, Mrs. Eva Ensley of the Cane Creek area between Sylva and Cullowhee, who is just 97 years young. She is a remarkable lady and we hope to have an interview with her in a forthcoming issue. A preliminary meeting has been held with the Jackson County Historical Assn. about a cooperative venture on a cemetery census publication. We will be bringing further details to you within the next few weeks. In the meantime, those who have already begun work on specific cemeteries should continue with those efforts. Information has been received that the 1920 census of North Carolina will soon be available on microfilm at WCU's Hunter Library. Also, Henry Buchanan has made available a photocopy of the Jackson County portion of this census for Society members; look for it on the publications table at the monthly meetings. Thanks, Henry, for your generosity. Calendar Sept. 10, Society Meeting 7:00 p.m., St. John's in Sylva. His parents were John and Libby Dockins Norton; he had two siblings, Ernest and Lela. Frank's grandparents were Elias (b. 1812, 10-28-1854) and Mary "Polly" Holden (1-27-1816, 3-25-1897) Norton. Elias was the third child of Barak (5-10-1777, 9-1-1869) and Mary Nicholson (6-31-1788, 3-26-1883) Norton, the first white settlers in Whiteside Cove near Cashiers in the 1820's. Frank married Nellie Henson, and their three sons were Paul, Alfred, and Benjamin "Ben" Franklin Norton. In appearance,. Frank Norton looked 30 years younger than his actual age. He sat straight in his chair and did not wear glasses or a hearing aid. A pleasant smile crossed his face often as he spoke softly about his life. In reminiscing about his childhood, Frank vividly recalled attending his first school located at Shortoff near the head of Cashiers about three miles on Buck Creek Road. Once he asked his teacher, Charlotte Young, if he could go to the spring for a drink. She gave him permission. This natural fountain of water had formed a big pool around it. Unfortunately, Frank fell in and got soaked. The teacher immediately sent him home with his older brother! He stated that school terms only lasted about three months, then the fall season sent them out to pick beans. Frank also attended the Cullowhee State Normal School while the family rented Will Norton's place at the mouth of Cullowhee Creek. Will; Norton was a member of the board of this institution and served as sheriff of Jackson County. In 1933 Frank left Cullowhee and returned to Highlands. When asked if he knew another centenarian, Ranzy Crawford who lived to celebrate his 102nd birthday, Frank said he went to "singing school" with him on Wayehutta. As a child Frank and his brother, Ernest, took "vacations" from work to fish. He enjoyed eating speckled or mountain trout. They were real fish, he mused, much better than fish today that's been stock fed. During the winter holidays, a bunch would gang up and go rabbit hunting. He remembered receiving a 16-gauge gun for a present one Christmas. As for deer hunting, some men drove Frank to Cedar Creek in Glenville. They set him in a stand and left, saying they would pick him up in the afternoon. It was a Saturday morning and Frank thought he'd freeze to death. He didn't see a track, much less a deer. He was beginning to get a little warm when four 92-73 o'clock rolled around and the rest of the hunting party returned for him. Nevertheless, he told those fellows, "If this is all there is to deer hunting, I don't want anything to do with it." Frank worked as a sawmill man until he was 76 years old. He started the business with a farm tractor at a time when some of the largest virgin timber was being felled. Frank was still driving and living by himself when he was 100 years old. He was proud of the fact he gave up his driver's license two years before the expiration date. He wasn't asked to relinquish his license, it was voluntary. Willard Scott on NBC's "Today Show" sent greetings to Frank on his 103rd birthday. Frank was looking forward to the 121st Barak Norton family reunion held at Whiteside Cove Church on Sunday, July 26, 1992, and was inviting all to attend. When asked for a comparison of the times, Frank said, "I used to know everybody, now I do not know anybody unless they tell me who they are. Today is better, it's much easier." While providing valuable genealogical data, these obituaries also serve as examples of the kind of information that was contained in church records. The Scotts Creek church burned some years ago and all records were lost except those that may be found in individual family papers.) Sister Keziah A., wife of James S. Queen, Jackson Co., NC was born December 5th, 1819, was married to the late James S. Queen of Haywood Co., NC Sept. 23, 1845. She joined the Baptist church at Scotts Creek Feb. 27, 1858. She remained a member of the same until her death which occurred Mar. 27, 1897. Her age was 77 years, 3 months, 22 days. She was a member of the Scotts Creek church 29 years and 1 months. Funeral Services was conducted by Rev. W. E. Conner March 29th. Keziah A. was the daughter of Rev. Wm. and Elizabeth Haynes of Haywood Co., NC. She has one sister and four brothers living. She was the mother of ten children, nine of whom are living and they were brought up under the influence of one of these beautiful and patient characters so seldom found. Her life was altogether lovely, brought that sweet hour of peace when the spirit prepared to the sweet beyond where the crown awaited her. She could calmly say mourn not for me, I would rather go to my Savior than to stay. She has finished her work. Shall we mourn our beloved or weep that her face we no longer behold. Oh, sweet is our hope in the moment of anguish. We'll meet her again in the city of God. Committee: Catherine Fisher, Laura Dills, Lizie Farmer C Bro. James S. Queen was born Feb. 23rd, 1819 and married to Keziah A. Haynes Sept. 23, 1845, departed this life May 28, 1893 at the age of 74 years and 3 months and 5 days. Brother Queen professed faith in Christ and joined the Scotts Creek Church Feb. 27th, 1858 and was baptized by Elder E. J. Brendle. Bro. Queen was ordained to the office of deacon in the church May 29th, 1858 by elder R. H. Moody, J. L. Buchanan & E. J. Brendle which capacity fulfilled with credit to himself and the cause of Christ until the day of his death. Brother Queen was a man of very strong convictions with regard to the doctrine of salvation by grace, he was always ready to help to support the gospel and especially his pastor with the means which God had gave him. Bro. Queen was a great sufferer for 40 yearns which deprived him of enjoying the good things of this life which the Lord gave unto him as a reward for his industry and economy in this life, still he bore his suffering with great patience always saying that he was willing for the Lord's will to be done. The last 6 months of his life he was confined to his bed which he patiently awaiting the bidding of his Master to leave his bed of affliction and go to enjoy that rest that remains for the people of God. In his last moments, he was very much composed, took his hands and closing his eyes then opening them and looking around he made a request concerning his funeral service, then closing them again he quietly and peaceably passed away. This closed a life concentration to his Masters. Bro. Queen was very affectionate (to) his wife and children, and his death the family and the church has sustained a great loss but our loss is his eternal gain. Respectfully submitted, Committee: A. H.
