  • Journeys Through Jackson is the official journal of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. The journal issues in this digital collection are presented as annual compilations.
  • c ^ J o u r n e y s ^ U r o u g f i J a c l ( s o n The Official JjJournal of the Jackson County QeneahgicalSociety, Inc. C n/oC n , o{ps. 6-7 June-July, 1992 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Greetings--I hope each of you is having a good summer and that you will have time for some rest and relaxation. Of course, vacations are time for genealogical searching, too; let us know of any of your spectacular finds. Several members have provided information they have located from various sources. We appreciate these items very much, as they are one of a kind and not accessible otherwise. I would encourage all of you to submit information of this kind which is so valuable. We would particularly like to have Bible records, obituaries, old letters of significance, and other interesting genealogical material for publication. Also, I would ask that interviews with persons over 90 be submitted. Work is continuing on Jackson County Heritage, with the initial proofreading of the family section completed and returned to the publisher. Please remember that orders are still being taken for the book: $50 for local pick-up, $53.50 for mailing. Several people have mentioned that they did not realize they could still place an order; if you get this question, please encourage them to go ahead and order now—it's the only way to be sure of getting a book. Contact has been made with county officials about securing some old records located in the basement of the county jail, and we hope to have the first material picked up within the next couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see what turns up. Plans are underway for several new projects by various members. Bill Crawford is working on early Jackson County education, especially the one-room schools. If you have pictures or information that would be helpful to him, please let him know. Also, work is beginning on a master list of cemeteries and the compilation of a complete cemetery census. If you have records of a cemetery, Henry Buchanan will be pleased to hear from you. Lloyd Cowan has mentioned the possibility of a project on the Hogrock mines; get in touch with him if you have pictures or information. In all of these efforts, we especially would like our out-of-town members to share ideas, pictures, and information with us. Calendar Society meeting, July 9, 7i00 p.m., at the Hospitality Room of the Ramsey Activity Center, Cullowhee. The program will be a film on our North Carolina heritage. July 11, trip to National Archives. We have two spaces still open—call immediately if you wish to go. August 13, 6t30 p.m., picnic at WOT picnic area. The Society will provide hamburgers; everyone please bring a covered dish. Spouses and/or guests are welcome. Call Carolyn Johnson (497-6406), David Frizzell (586-9317), or Ruth (293-5227) no later than August 7 to let us know whether you will attend. September 10, Society meeting. The program will be on historic buildings in Jackson County. We are trying to schedule a workshop for October. Watch for details. Thanks for your comments about Journeys, your interest in projects, and your willingness to help in any way possible. We have a great Society! Willie Coats Brown and Arlesia--Coward. - -Her—grandparents .were _Javan. Benjamin and Sard Jane Hooper Coward and. William A. and Lula C. Coats Brown. Eula had a sister, Anna Lou Brown, born 14 September 1905, died 31 December 1931, buried at Lower Coward Cemetery. Eula was married to Ransom Earl Hooper, born 12 November 1889, died 13 July 1976, buried at Hooper Cemetery on Caney Fork Road. Their only child, Norma Carolyn Hooper, born 22 November 1924, died 17 February 1926, also is buried in the Hooper Cemetery. I asked Eula questions about the COWARDS. One interesting thing she told me: she said Javan Benjamin Coward's oldest child, also his only son, was Eular H. Coward. Eular died at age 18, on 17 May, 1894, and his mother wanted him buried close to home. His was the first grave in the Lower Coward Cemetery. Javan's wife, Sara Jane Hooper Coward, lived to be 103 years old. Eula said the Baptist Church asked Javan to give the cemetery to them and they would guarantee that no blacks would be buried there. Javan replied that blacks had to be buried, too, and it would remain a community cemetery. (This interview took place on 24 July 1990, before the beginning of JCGS, and we are grateful to Trudy Adams for sharing with us. Trady said that her husband copied two photographs Eula had, one of her husband's mother, Sylvitha Coward Hooper, and one of Sara Jane Hooper Coward.) 92-53 Items of Genealogical Interest in the Tuckaseigee Democrat January-July, 1891 V ^ Jan. 21: Our townsman J. It required eligible voters (white males) to name an ancestor who had been eligible to vote in 1867. Aside from the obvious racist intent, the voter books are valuable tools for genealogical research. The book is located in the county Register of Deeds Office. ^J Key to entries: Name of registered voter, age, ancestor, precinct, date of registration. To illustrate how the charts compare to each other, we are showing both charts for our member Jean Crawford Brown. When reading an ahnentafel charty remember that #2 is the father of #1, #3 is the mother of #1. For preceding generations, double the number to get the father, double the number and add one to get the mother, i.e., father of #2 is #4, mother of #2 is #5; father of #3 is #6, mother of #3 is #7. While this type of chart is different from our usual pedigree chart, it does lend itself to easy duplication.)
