V o l . 1 1 , N o . 4 A p r i l , 1 9 92 President's Message Greetings to each of you on this beautiful spring day I First, I want to extend a special welcome to our 24 new members, some of whom live close to Jackson County, others in distant places like Idaho, Washington, and California. We are happy to have you as a part of JCGS, and we invite your attendance whenever possible at meetings of the group. We also invite your submissions for Journeys—your pedigree charts, articles of interest, old letters, etc. All such items help to create an interesting newsletter. Second, we extend thanks to the 48 who have renewed their membership. WHERE ARE THE OTHER 49 FROM LAST YEAR? Please take a look at your mailing label on this newsletter. New members will show (N), life members are (L), renewals are (R). If you were a member last year and your name does not have the (R), we have not received your dues for 1992. Send your check today; those not paying dues by June 1 will be removed from the membership roll and will not receive Journeys. Orders for Jackson County Heritage continue to arrive. Cost now is $50, with an additional $3.50 if the book is to be mailed. Orders may be sent to the Society's address. The Publications Committee requests that members assist with obtaining material for Journeys. Included in this issue is an interview form; if you know someone more than 90 years old, please visit that person, talk a while, and then give us an interview to publish. Also, if you have a cemetery census that can be used, please send it. The Committee is doing a wonderful job with the journal, but everyone's help is needed to keep up with the demand for material. With the summer coming up, lots of activities will take place that could involve genealogical information. Be alert, and keep the Society informed of activities that would be of interest to other members. Also, if you have materials that would helpful to others and you are finished with them, the Society will accept all donations and will make them accessible. One item that would be helpful for Society use is a filing cabinet that could be locked. Any ideas? Calendar Society Meeting, May 14, 7:00 p.m., St. John's Episcopal Church, Sylva. There will not be a formal program; instead, several members will report on various research topics they have found useful. Plan now to attend. Remember the Haywood County workshop on May 5, at Harrell Center, Lake Junaluska, 6:00 p.m. William Dollarhide will present two lectures: "Getting Started Right" and "Managing a Genealogical Project." Cost is $5; check may be sent to HCGS, Box 1331, Waynesville 28786. Anyone who wishes to carpool may call me at 293-5227. Also remember the Old Buncombe workshop scheduled for May 16. The guest speaker will be Dr. George K. Schweitzer. Topics covered will include military genealogy, genealogical sources and techniques, and genealogical problem solving. Pre-registration cost is $20 and includes lunch at the Holiday Inn - Tunnel Road.
