We may have some winter yet, if today is any example, and spring may be a little later than we thought. But that gives us more days for genealogy pursuits, since we can't get outside. Right? To each his own. If you think this message is a little strange, please consider that-I am in a state of great excitement. Wonderful things are happening this weekl First, the book is being completed and the final pages are to be picked up on Monday. You will be pleased with the finished product, all 400+ pages. Your book committee has done a fantastic job in a very short period of time, considering the mass of material they have processed and the standards they have followed in making sure that Jackson County Heritage is an excellent volume. Give them your thanks—a list is shown elsewhere in this newsletter. And thanks, too, to each of you who submitted articles and/or ordered books. Remember that the book price is now $50 and orders are still being taken. Anyone who is interested may order by sending a check to the Society's address. The heroic work by the book committee in meeting the deadline means that delivery will take place around October 1, just in time for Christmas giving. There will be a limited number of extra volumes, so only those who have ordered will be sure of receiving a copy. The other big news is that Jackson County Genealogical Society is now a tax-exempt organization, both with the Internal Revenue Service and the NC Department of Revenue. We may now accept contributions and donations which will then be tax-deductible to the donor. Also, we may apply for grants which are available to such organizations. While this task is one in which most members have not participated, it is an important step for us, and I am greatly relieved that the process is completed. Appreciation is due to David Frizzell and to Kirk Stephens for their assistance with this time-consuming activity. Membership continues to grow, with several new memberships since last month. The publicity given to our society by Joyce Parris in her genealogy column in the Asheville Citizen was very helpful. Thanks", Joyce 1 Renewal memberships are slow in arriving, so, if you haven't renewed for 1992, please let us hear from you today. CALENDAR Society Meeting, April 9, 7:00 p.m., at St. John's Church, Sylva. Our speaker will be David Bryson, who has done a great deal of historical work on land records in the southern part of Jackson County. He will also tell us something of gold mining in Jackson County. Plan now to attend. Looking ahead: We are trying to schedule a census workshop at WCU's Hunter Library later this spring. Watch for additional information. The Haywood County Genealogical Society is sponsoring a workshop by William Dollarhide, nationally known genealogical lecturer, on May 5, 1992, at Harrell Center, Lake Junaluska Assembly, beginning at 6:00 p.m. There will be two lectures, "Getting Started Right" and "Managing a Genealogical Project." Cost is, $5, and pre-registration is advised. Your check may be sent to HCGS, P. O. Box 1331, Waynesville NC 28786. The Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society will have its spring workshop on Saturday, May 16. The workshop will be conducted by Dr. George K. Schweitzer. Information and registration materials are available from OBCGS, P. O. Box 2122, Asheville NC 28802. If anyone is interested in a week-long genealogical study at Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC, please let me know. Time is September. It required eligible voters (white males) to name an ancestor who had been eligible to vote in 1867. Aside from the obvious racist intent, the voter books are valuable tools for genealogical research. The book is located in the county Register of Deeds Office. Key to entries: Name of registered voter, age, ancestor, precinct, date of registration.
