V o l . 1 1 , N o . 1 J a n u a r y , 1 9 92 President'a Massage Happy New Year! I hope each of you has had a happy holiday season and that you are now ready to embark on a new year- filled with genealogical activities. The first year of the Jackson County Genealogical Society was filled with lots of activity. You will find printed in this issue of "Journeys" the annual reports of the officers. We would welcome your comments and suggestions on any phase of our operations. At the annual meeting in December the 1991 officers, with one exception, were re-elected to serve for 1992. Vice President Nelma Bryson has moved from the area, and that office will be filled at the January meeting. I want to extend my thanks to Carolyn Johnson, Secretary; David Frizzell, Treasurer; and Kirk Stephens, Publications Chairman, for the wonderful support they have given me and their dedication to making our Society an efficient and effective organization. As we begin a new year, we want to continue planning activities and programs that will be of interest to you and will assist you in whatever way you are working on genealogy. Some tentative plans are being made for a workshop in the spring, and we would welcome your suggestion of programs for our monthly meetings. The Society has accepted the offer from St. John's Episcopal Church to meet in their building. The church is located on Jackson Street in Sylva, just behind the post office and the hospital auxiliary building. We appreciate very much this gesture and will use the undercroft of the building until a more permanent place is obtained. Jackson County, and we are fast approaching the January 15 deadline for submission of articles and book orders. If you haven't sent in your materials, please hurry! The Book Committee has worked very hard and will have a publication that you can be proud of. The only way to be sure of obtaining one of these books is to place your order now, so don't delay and then be disappointed. As we go into another year's activities, I would emphasize that this is your Society. Let us have your comments, your questions, your queries. We need volunteers to conduct interviews to be published each month. If you have friends or relatives over 90 years of age, please interview them. Standard interview forms are available from Kirk Stephens. Thanks for all your efforts in 1991; now let's continue in 1992 to make our Society better. Ruth Shuler * * * * * * * * * * * * Calendar The monthly Society meeting will be held on February 13 at 7:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. The program will be presented by J. D. McRorie, News Editor of The Sylva Herald, who will speak on the establishment of Jackson County. Mark your calendar now for the second Thursday of every month - the Society will meet on those dates all through the year. We will have programs at all monthly meetings and hope to see you there. It required eligible voters (white males) to name an ancestor who had been eligible to vote in 1867. Aside from the obvious racist intent, the voter books are valuable tools for genealogical research. The book is located in the county Register of Deeds Office. ^y Key to entries: Name of registered voter, age, ancestor, precinct, date of registration. Bridgers, J. W. Bright, T. Bright, T. G. Buchanan and Matilda Palestine Willson 13 Mar 1870 KJ 92-10 December 12, 1991 - Annual Reports of Officers Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. President's Report In March of 1991 a group met to discuss a genealogical organization for Jackson County. The fifteen persons present at that time voted to proceed with organization and elected the following officers: Ruth Shuler, President; Nelma Bryson, Vice President; Carolyn Johnson, Secretary; arid David Frizzell, Treasurer. Larry Crawford volunteered to draft a constitution and bylaws, and Kirk Stephens, Dorris Beck, and Carolyn Johnson volunteered to serve on a publications committee. The group decided to meet on the second Thursday night of each month. The months of April and May were taken up with organizational details. We filed for and obtained status as a non-profit corporation in North Carolina. Beginning in June, a program has been presented at each meeting—June, local resources for research; July, Walter Hall, President of Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society; August, Tyler Blethen, The Scotch-Irish Migration; September, taking pictures of old photographs; October, Helen Vance, The North Shore; November, Jane Nardy, How to Handle Horse Thieves, etc. Attendance at these monthly meetings has ranged from 25 to 40 persons. In addition to monthly meetings, members took a field trip to the LDS Church at Cherokee, attended seminars at several locations, and went on the trips- to the North Shore cemeteries. Upon adoption of a constitution and bylaws in April, the name "Jackson County Genealogical Society" was chosen and a dues structure accepted. Since that time 104 memberships nave been received: seven life members, 21 family memberships, and 76 individual memberships. A total of $3,045 has been collected in membership dues. I have represented the Society by speaking at five meetings: Jackson County Historical Association; Golden Age Club; Hall Family Reunion; Haywood County Genealogical Society; and, in conjunction with Dorris Beck, Alpha Delta Kappa. Several memberships were obtained as a result of these appearances. The major project of the Society is the Jackson County Heritage Book on which good progress is being made. Numerous news releases and radio announcements have been made, and the book committee has met each month on the fourth Tuesday night. Tax-exempt status has been requested from both the Internal Revenue Service and the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Each new member has received a letter, and I have responded to all inquiries promptly. The first year of operation has been a busy one, and much has been accomplished. Ruth Shuler, President * * * * * * * * Secretary's Report Minutes of all monthly meetings have been kept and are filed in a permanent record book. Correspondence has been handled as necessary. Information has been sought on filing grant proposals, and this activity can continue once tax-exempt status is received. Carolyn Johnson, Secretary * * * * * * * * Report of the Publications Chairman The Society voted to publish a monthly journal beginning in July and chose the name "Journeys Through Jackson." Volume One seems to have been a success. One of our biggest challenges has been keeping back issues on hand. For the July issue, 50 copies were sufficient, by October we had doubled the monthly production and currently print 150 copies of each issue. Our subscription base is growing: "Journeys" is currently mailed to 11 other states, 14 other counties in NC, and we even have one reader living in Germany. We are currently exploring publication exchange programs with other genealogical societies. We hope to build a library of publications that will benefit Jackson County Researchers. My special thanks to Dorris Beck and Carolyn Johnson for their contributions and help. They join me in thanking all those members who donated materials for publication.
