  • record image
  • Journeys Through Jackson is the official journal of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. The journal began as a monthly publication in July 1991, was published bimonthly from 1994 to 2003, and continues today as a quarterly publication. The journal issues in this digital collection are presented as annual compilations.
  • Journeys ,. 'IIirougli ' r I %e Official Joumai of 1:& JacR§on Crmntg (jenealogicaf Society, 1nc. o/o[ 1, 9{o. 4 Octo6e'"' 1991 I~ President's Message "The frost is on the pumpkin ... " in our Mountain Home, Jackson County. The cool, clear days of October are here, and those who are fortunate enough to be on our scenic highways can see row upon row of mountains, marching into the distance. The gardens have been harvested, the canning and freezing are done, and we begin to look ahead to the slower pace of winter. Now is the time to bring out those notebooks of genealogical materials, dust off the reference volumes, and get started with additional or new research. It is our hope that "Journeys Through Jackson" has already provided you with at least one piece of useful information, and we encourage you to continue to send in your queries and respond to other queries that fit into the research you are doing. Your society continues to grow, with membership now standing at 96. Wouldn't it be wonderful to bit 100 in our first year? If you know someone who is interested, encourage that person to join. Work continues on the Heritage of Jackson County, with the deadline for submission of family stories upon us: October 15. Get that story in the mail now, so your family history will be sure to be published. And send along your book order, to be sure that you will be able to obtain a copy. Also, we need your assistance in supplying material for "Journeys Through Jackson." We especially need interviews with persons 90 years of age or older, and we have available a form you can use if you wish. Kirk Stephens, our editor, joins me in asking that you help with this feature. Also, if you have done a census of a local cemetery, we would be pleased to have that information for publication. Thanks for any help you can give us. Best wishes to Willa Mae Scroggs as she and Porter leave for the winter in Florida. We'll miss you, Willa Mae, and envy you, too. Some of our members are traveling far from Jackson County these days: Helen Davis is visiting family in Seattle and other Washington cities, and Barbara Dooley is vacationing in Germany. We'll look forward to hearing their stories later. Our special thanks to Rick and David Frizzell for arranging for Larry Tucker to do the photographs at the September meeting. It was a great success and we will have another session if others want to have old pictures copied. Consideration is being given to planning a workshop for the spring. Give your thoughts on topics and speakers to Nelma Bryson, Carolyn Johnson, David Frizzell, Kirk Stephens, or me. Ruth Shuler Jlovember 14 Jlagular Society Meeting, J ackaon County Library, 7100 p.m. Come and hear Jane Hardy tell us what to do about the skeletons in our closets. This will be a fun evening for all. December 12 will be our annual meeting. This is the meeting where we hear reports from all committees and conduct the election of new officers. Place and time will be announced in the next issue of "Journeys," but please mark this date on your calendar now. January 1, 1992, will begin a new membership year. Remember that the society operates on a calendar year basis. We will begin membership renewal in November. .... Table of Contents A King in Every. Almost none of us, it sometimes seems, can resist the temptation to swing occasionally from our family tree or, lacking a ~uitable one, invent one to match our aspirations. Either way, we can do so confident that since all of us are the children•of Adam, we all can·cla~ we are nobly descended. And~n we c~n afford the price of our vanity, we all ban find somebody who will sell us a coat of arms. Lest modesty deny you your- birthright, consider the rqatheme3rt:ics of probability. No matter how low your present social. status, the odds are that somewhere in your background there was a castle and perhaps a King. And lest your pride swells too greatly, the odds equally favor in ,your ances~.ry both rogues and roues'. T To understand the probabiiities, begin' with the ancestors you know. Everybody has two parents. Working back from there, even if you aren't::certain of their names, you can count four grandparents, and eight great grandparents. If you carry your calculat1ons back still farther, the total of ancestors over a span of say 64 generations would be virtually peyond counting. . If you take one generation as the e~ivalent of 2p years, 64 generations would equal 1,280 years. Thus in approximately lJ of the 20 centuries since the Nativity, we all have inherited some of the nobility and some of the villany of 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 people. ' That fantast·ic figure is cited in reference books as the classicj example of the difficulties of ac~urately and honestly trac~ng a family's ge~ealogy. Large as •it is, it has not discouraged either the hundreds of us who every year retain genealogists to trace ours, nor the thousands of us who, skipping the genealogists, claim a common heritage with a name that happens to be the same as, or similar to, our own. Actually, the same ancestor appears several times in the family trees of everybody, which reduces the total number· of ance'stors but still leaves the total fantastically large. Actbally, ·too, none of us can know all our ancestors back more than a few generations. Even in 10 generations, we have had 1,024 ancestors apiece. In that number there would be as many we would not care to boast of as there would of those we would proudly acclaim. ' v so whether you name happens to be Washington or Arnold, or Grant or Lee, remember before you brag that you carry the genes of traitors as ~ell as patriots. Think upon that whiie you reflect upon your heraldry, and consider that the least of those with whom you deal may, by the odds of 9enealogy, be nobler than you. carolina country Reader, ~Chaney, .James (Ed) Moore Publishing co.,. purham~ 1973. 91-37 Death Certificates of Jackson county Persons Born Prior to 1900 (Abstracted from records in Jackson County Register of Deeds' Office) Volume II 1915 Key to entries: Name of deceased (place of birth), date of birth, date of death, father's name (place of birth), mother's name (place of birth), informant (address), place of burial Dillsboro Township Etta Hooper (Cullowhee), 10/02/1894, 10/08/1915, Gabriel Hooper (SC), Laura Adington (NC), c. z. It required eligible voters (white males) to name an ancestor who had been eligible to vote in 1867. Aside from the obvious racist intent, the voter books are valuable tools for genealogical research. The book is located in the county Register of Deeds Office.
