The journal issues in this digital collection are presented as annual compilations.
  • J6urneys 7'/irougli Jac/(§on ' {' I .. - L 'Ifie Official Joumaf of tfi.e Jac.R§on Coun:tg (jeneafogic.af Societg, 1nc. Septem6er, 1991 President's Message As our thoughts turn to fall and harvest and reunions, I am often reminded of the words from the Psalmist: "I will lift up my eyes unto the hills." The hills and valleys of our Mountain Home, Jackson county, seem to grow more beautiful as time passes. And nowhere in the world can you find more beautiful people than here in Jackson county-beautiful in spirit, actions, and thoughts. Those who have left Jackson County to live elsewhere have these same wonderful characteristics, and I thoroughly enjoy my contacts with so many of you. Please continue to write and let us know of your genealogical activities. A special thanks to those who have offere~. to share information with others. Membership continues to grow in your association, now standing at 93. Several have provided memberships as gifts to family and friends. Each member receives the back issues of "Journeys Through Jackson," and these are mailed as rapidly as possible. Work continues on the Jackson County Heritage Book. Family stories are received daily. As an indication of our range, stories have come in from California, Washington, New Jersey, Alabama, and other states, as well as many from various places in North Carolina. Remember that the deadline is October 15. Remember, too, that your books must be ordered before publication. That is the only way to assure that you will be able t9 receive a copy. Order forms are available in the brochure advertising the book or may be obtained from the Society. I look forward to rece~ving your order soon. The Society extends sympathy to Beulah Hall Rhinehart on the death of her mother and to Lloyd Cowan on the loss of his son •• Calendar Next Society Meeting A real treat is in store for you on Saturday, October 12, when the Society will meet in the Mountain Heritage Center, Western Carolina University, for a program on the North Shore of Fontana Lake. Helen Vance, president of the North Shore Association, will be the featured speaker, and we will also see the slide-tape show prepared by the Mountain Heritage Center staff. The program will begin at 10:00 a.m., with coffee available at 9:30 a.m. The fall colors should be lovely at that time, and we hope many of our members who live out of town will be able to attend. Looking ahead to November, Jane Nardy will be speaking to the group at our regular meeting on the 14th. Watch for additional details in the October issue of "Journeys." Then, in December, the annual meeting of the Society will be held. Place is yet to be determined, but make plans now to be there for a comprehensive look at the business of the Society and for the election of officers. * * * * On Saturday, September 21, the Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society will be holding its fall workshop. A schedule of helpful and interesting workshops has been planned; anyone interested in attending may call (704) 253-1894 for information. Our society needs volunteers for the JCGS Interview column. If you have friends or relatives over 90, please interview them. Standard interview forms are available from Kirk Stephens. Her grandpar~nts ·w&~e Joshua Kimsey 'and Margaret Malissa Buchanan Hall and James Jasper~and Martpa Ann Dill~ Buchanan. The Hall, ~~chapan, and Dills families were all ploneer families in Jack~on County. 1 ' Delia had three brothersz Coleman (died ae an infant), Norman Edward, and r • • l• r. • Hampton Henry7 and twd sisters, Martha Victoria (Cabe) and Danan Lil (Deitz). , t ' . Delia H' all married Roystan Duffield Cowan II, and they had six children: Frankie Aileen (died as an infant), Bennie Dean (Settlemyre), Bernice (Higdon), Leo Broughton, L~oyd Wilkes, Roystan Du~field "R.D." III, and Ro~er Bryant, sr. Here are some qomments from Delia Hall Cowan: "I was a part of large families, hardw'orking. and closeknit. Families were large, worked hard, yet enjoyed life just being together. We worked_ together, suffered together, played together, and prayed together, ~ut die~ separa~ely,· being buried in the same cemetery, where 'the ·graves were 'mounded up' and with'.no 11\0re than a eimple stone or stick'tor a marker.- ~ I J "I marrie~ Roystan cowan, a neighbor, a~ age e+ghteen. Learning. from my mother (who waa the best) 'I was immediately a good cook and a good ·~~st~ess. cooking three meals a day over an old wood stove, especially in the wintertime, was -no easy task. However, it was always well worth it just to see six hungry children, tired and hungry from work and play, gobble it a~l up. . "Me'als wete always great in ~hat we raised' all our .food, other than flour, lard, sugar, salt, and spices. The country ham, country eggs, fresh butter and milk was always so good and delicious and wholespme. Healthy food grew healthy children. . . . . "The horse and buggy, sl~, and wagon, we~e means of transportation, yet walking was the most common method. L~rge families walked together ~o church. "The rugged farms and wood~ands provided lots of acreage to farm,_ garden, mine, cut timber, range 1liveptocK, and pick fruits and berries. Picking wild strawberries in the spring, blackherriea in the summer, and gathering the tasty abundant varieties of apples in the fall were always exciting. Wheat-threshing, 91-25 molasses-making, and hog-killipg weFe always times when men, women, children, and old folks in the community were all enthusiastically involved. "The old one-room school and church were a meeting place within the community. School was from three to six months,- and most chil~en walked from one to two miles to the old house with no lights and heate4 by a pot-bellied stove. The boys were often let out of school to go up on the Pine Knob to gather wood for the stove. Also, in winter, the creeks seemingly stayed frozen over, making it fun for boys and girls to 'slide on their rears' on the ice. The older children, with grades running from to seven grades and only one ~eacher, always enjoyed the recitations, declamations, debates, and spelling bees held on Friday evenings before school turned out for the weekend. Even today, at age 95, I can still recite most of the old poems, inc:lruding 'Annabelle Lee' and 'Maude Mueller', which I ana' tne other students learned back then. All were good spellers a~d good at memorizing. "The old church welcomed old-timey gospel preaching, singing, praying, and shouting. Revival mee~~ngs and Homecoming (with dinner on the gro~nd) were held every summer. Respecting the dead, every spring before decoration time, the cemetery and all the graves were cleaned off. • "One of the hun~~ds of things I miss most is the old •quiltings' with my own mother and all the womenfolk who gathered in to quilt for pleasure and fellowship. Bven more so was the opportunity to have an added quilt to keep us warm in the wintertime. "Yes, in the olden days, you either did--or you did without!" Interviewed by Lloyd w.
