  • In Camps Beaufort District S. C. January the 13th 1862 Dear brother, I attempt this lonesome day to try to write you a few lines in answer to yours of the 5 [just] whitch was gladly received & its contents duly red I was glad to hear from you and to here yourself, & family was well, but alas some of the contents increast my aching heart though I had hearde the mornful & harte breaking news thoe after I got my [mide] reconciled, I have strived to be reconciled and resined to the will of he that hath all power & knoweth all things I have had the measles for a weeke but I am now a greate deal beter will be well in a few days & I so hope these lines may reach your hand & finde you, & family & friends all enjoying good health the yankees are still occasionally along the coste they sometimes throw bombs at our pickets & run them off & then slip out and steal a fat cow or hog or something of that sorte & then get back as soon as they can to save ther scalp This is the way the cowardly pups plays round I don’t think they aim to come out & fight us like men though it is harde for me to tell mutch about them They threw a 26 pounder the other evening at a house I suppose to try to set it on fire & it failed to burst & our picket got
