Item
  • John C. Campbell Folk School published a series of newsletters from 1926 to 1950. Written like a letter from the school's director, the newsletter is a source of information about the classes and activities at the Folk School and their impact on the surrounding community. This newsletter states the primary aim of the Folk School: "The first requisite to a higher quality of life is an enlightened, open-minded, forward-looking people." Positive characteristics of an historic mountain people include independence, humor, and hospitality. Agricultural problems and better, practical methods are topics of discussion in classes. Craft instruction is provided at the Folk School, as well as in homes up to ten miles away from Brasstown. Mabel Mullins is named as a public health nurse who organized community health clubs and pre- and post-natal care. The newsletter ends with a solicitation of support in order to continue the good work of the school.
