Waynesville N.C. Sept 17th 1874. My Dear Daughters, After a long and tedious trial in the Indian suit the taking of evidence is at last closed and the court moves today and tomorrow to Asheville where the arguments are to be made, I will start this evening to Asheville and reach the place some time tomorrow. I had hoped to get home this week but I will be fortunate if I can do so by the last of next week. I cannot as yet guess at the results of the suit, I am more than ever confirmed in the opinion that if we get justice we will come out all right. In reguard to my own part while great threats and severe charges were made they all fell harmless at my feet. I had the consciousness of having all the time acted honestly and uprightly and did not fear the truth, but was very anxious for it to be made manifest, but I did feel uneasy at the terible combination

In this letter of September 17, 1874, James W. Terrell writes to his daughters, Mollie (Mary Jane “Molly” Terrell Teague, 1859-1934) and Sallie (Sarah Ermina “Sally” Terrell Bird, 1861-1943). He discusses his work on an Indian court case. The trial closed and the case will move to Asheville. He congratulates Mollie and Sallie on their profession of faith and encourages them with scripture. He misses his family, but hopes to return home in a week.
