  • Washington City D.C. July 27th 1868 W H Thomas Esq Dear Col I received your letter some weeks since that had layed in the Indian office for three weeks before I received it. I should have answered before now. Was waiting for the action of congress relative to the interest of the N.C. Cherokees. The bill passed Transferring the power from their treasury the that of the Interior putting the North Carolina Cherokees under the control of the Indian department. The Western delegation of Cherokees [couchrded] a treaty making sale of all the land west of qu. agreed to take the ($500,000) Five hundred thousand dollars given for the Northern land with five percent from May 1836, but that treaty was not [illegible] it was for the want of this, congress adjourns today to meet in September, I will leave for home in a few days, will bring answers from the department of papers filed by the eastern Cherokee and instruction from the department under the new act of congress gives my kind regards to Mrs Thomas & your
