  • [H Q] Head of Valley River Aug 10th 1864 Col W. H. Thomas This morning the Bushwhackers under [illegible] [illegible] & [illegible] [H. Farmer, taken possession of W. & N.S. Calvert’s house [illegible] the negroe woman to cook breakfast for there. Since then [illegible] further then has been heard of them. I have 26 men on the Hanging Dog Pathway, sitting for them. They said that they are on the lookout for the cavalry under [illegible] and the Mc Afee boys. They are all from [illegible] move of the Hanging Dog are engaged in it. The people of the county are all quiet, except a few citizens that are reporting all the people to [illegible] only [illegible]. To the [illegible] [illegible] out [illegible] Owing to the vote of Clay County I have thought of would be best to let the men of Clay encampt in that county to [illegible] in Capt Sanderson in maintaining the peace of that county. I have sent [illegible] with 18. Men to aid the [illegible] guards in protecting the citizens and their property, against the robbers until otherwise [illegible] by you. We are in much need of ammunition can not do much [illegible] that it we can do without it. We can do without [illegible] better than ammunition. I [illegible] cooperate with Col [illegible] in [illegible] these robbers. I am in need of some money would the to know whether in not Capt Terrell is prepared to pay any to affairs or not. It will be out of my power to go to [illegible] Post next Saturday owing to the excitement about the bushwhackers that are prowling about. We are in need of some stationary, pleases send some as soon as possible.
