men and is in for the fight. Prof. Peters of the College here has also joined a mounted company – one organized at Marion. I felt a little sorry that he volunteered, to leave all for camp life. I fear that he will hardly be able to stand the hardships of a vigorous campaign, though as he is an officer (Lieutenant) he may fare a little better than an ordinary soldier. There will be enough volunteers I think to answer all purposes for a while yet. At least 80,000 Virginians have tendered their services to the governor. The college has suspended all together, and I suppose there will be no school next session at all, so Prof. Peters has joined the army, of course my proposed proposed plan of suspending of pastoral labor for the purpose of studying Hebrew etc, is all knocked in the head. I do not feel it to be my duty to quit preaching to become a soldier. My convictions of duty will not I suppose change in this respect until some emergency demand it. We need to hold fast to religion and its duties now more than ever. Drooping hearts will need in perilous times, more than ever, the consolations of the gospel. The sick and distressed will need to be visited and comforted.

In a letter addressed to his brother, written on May 14, 1861, James King Stringfield expresses his advocacy for southern independence, a sentiment shared by his brother as well. King mentions the brothers' proud family history of fighting in the Revolutionary War at the battle of King's Mountain and the Creek War at the battle of Emuckfaw. King goes on to mention mutual friends who have already volunteered for mounted rifle regiments, a W. H. Price, and a Professor (Lieutenent) Peters. He also mentions the 80,000 other Virginians already enlisted. King expresses his regret that he will not be volunteering, as he believes it is his responsibility and the responsibility of other preachers to comfort the families of the soldiers. In his closing statements King gives some final words of encouragement, as he know it is more than likely his brother will volunteer, reminding him to look for strength in God.
