  • TEACHERS ORGANIZATIONS TUCKASEIGE DEMOCRAT, July 17, 1889 R. L. Madison, Ed. THE TEACHERS' COUNCIL "The object of this meeting, which was held at Webster, July 15, 1889, is that the teachers of Jackson may become more united in their work as teachers of one common purpose. On motion Prof. T. C. Buchanan was called to the chair as President pro tern, G. W. Stillwell, sec. pro tern. After which the following officers were elected, and committees appointed: Prof. Coleman Cowan, President; Prof. J. H. House, 1st Vice Pres.; Miss Ida Rogers, 2nd Vice Pres.; Prof. A. E. Pinckard, 3rd Vice Pres.; J. F. Watson, Sec. Committee on programme, Prof. J. H. House, chm.; comm. on membership, Mr. J. C. Reed, chm. Comm. on Time and Place, Mr. J. M. Watson, Chm. Comm. on Constitution and By-laws, Prof. T. C. Buchanan, Chm. J. F. Watson, Sec. THE TUCKASEIGE DEMOCRAT, Wed., July 24, 1889 R. L. Madison, Editor, Tuckaseige, N. C. The Jackson Teacher's Council met July 20, at 9:00 A. M. at Webster, and was called to order by the President, and led in prayer by R. L. Madison. Minutes of the previous meetings read and adopted. TUCKASEIGE DEMOCRAT, Wed., April 16, 1890 F. A. Luck and Son, Editors and Proprietors A CALL FOR A W. N. C. EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION "Superintendents of Public Instruction, Teachers, and Friends for Education in Western North Carolina; The most crying need of Western North Carolina at this time is Education. Unity of effort and oneness of aim among our educational workers is absolutely essential to the accomplishment of the best, most speedy, and most permanent results. Unless the professional spirit is aroused and the most aggressive and progressive measures are adopted, nothing but desultory and unsatisfactory results will be reached. There is a State Teacher's Assembly but it is of no direct benefit to us. Its meetings are held so remote from us that but few, if any, from this part of the State can attend them. What we need is a W. N. C. Education Association. One that all of our teachers can attend and one that will result in direct and immediate improvements among us. In each one of our counties let delegates be chosen to a convention for the general educational advancement. Let the county Supts. appoint delegates from the public and private school teachers—one for every ten or fraction thereof. Let those delegates be the most alive and progressive teachers and those who will be sure to attend. Futher- more let each county Supt. be a member of the convention, ex-officio. The time and place had been designated to prevent the probable defeat of the project through delay and to facilitate the arrangement of other important preliminaries. We think the place is central and the time convenient. Now if four county Supts. (who are all doubtless earnest and enthusiastic men) will attend to this matter at once and use their influence in its favor the convention will prove a success. So much is at stake we cannot afford to treat the subject with indifference. We appeal to every friend of education to speed the movement. Let us arouse and take this decisive step in educational progress. Your Humble Servant and Co-laborer," Robt. L. Madison Principal of the Cullowhee High School, Painter, N. C. April 9th, 1890 ASHEVILLE CITIZEN TIMES, August 7, 1938 "Experiences of a Pedagogue in the Carolina Highlands by Robert L. Madison" In July 1890, in response to my call, there met in Waynesville a representative group of teachers and organized the W. N. C. Teachers Association. John W. Starnes of Asheville as chosen President. Captain C. B. Way, Buncombe Co. Supt. of Schools, Vice President, and this writer Secretary. The next year the Association met at Bryson City. From TUCKASEIGE DEMOCRAT Sept. 9, 1891 Western N. C. Teachers Association called to meet. "At a meeting of the Ex. Com. of the W. N. C. Teachers Association held in Asheville, Saturday, August 29, 1891, it was decided that a call meeting of the Association should be held at Bryson City in Swain County on the 29th and 30th of October next. It is the determination of this body to push a vigorous campaign for Education throughout our entire section. All teachers are allowed to become members; and certainly no one can afford to remain outside. Any school official or educational worker can become a member by paying the membership fee of $1.00 for males or fifty cents for females." By order of committee John W. Starnes, President
