J.W. Killian to Col. J. Cathey, January 19, 1863

In this letter of January 19, 1863, J.W. Killian writes to Joseph Cathey to report that he has arrived home from visiting a North Carolina regiment of the Confederate Army near Fredericksburg. He reports that he found the soldiers in better condition and in better spirits than he expected, and he gives some information on Confederate troop movements. He also informs Cathey that Captain James Cathey and some of his men have sent money home and instructed Cathey to have an agent distribute according to instructions that Killian has in his possession. Killian closes by indicating his desire to see Cathey in person to give a fuller report.

Davidson River Jan 19 1863 ____ Cathey Dear Sir I arrived home last Friday Evening from the army near Fredricksburg I found our mountain Boys general well and in fine Spirits and better clad than I expected to See them Gen Ransom & Gen Cooks Brigagis left there camps on the 4th Jan at 6 o clock a m for part unknown to them at the time while I was at Richmond they marched through the city I went with them out 3 miles the night I was in Petirsburg they were in 2 miles of the city But did not see them I understood they were a waiting for orders where to go I seen Doct Fletcher at Raleigh he told me there were ordered to Goldsboro NC and to the Rail Road was making arrangements to transport them from Petersburg to Goldsboro If any other troops have been ordered from Gen Lees army I did not here it Capt James Cathey and a good many of his Boys sent a good large pack of money to your care and requested you to send an agent after it for them I have directions in my possession how you are to dispose of it which directions I was to deliver to the agents who came after the money my girls says send your Daughter Sarah I could tell you more about the Boys if I could see you more than I can write this morning Very Truly yours J.W.
