  • In this letter of February 1861 J.J. Welch writes to D.W. Siler asking him to inquire about about the status of some land surveys he mailed. He also gives updates on local developments and muses on the likelihood of civil war.
  • J.J. [?] Welch to D.W. Siler, February 2 [?], 1861 feb the 2 [?] th 1861 State of N.C. Macon County Mr D.W. Siler Sir I sent two land plots by the mail to the Secatary for Stats grants in witch I inclos a two dollar bill and I wrote to him to send them back by mail to Nantihala P.O it has been six weeks or two months ago and I have never heard from them yet I want you if you pleas to know of the secatary if they have ever come to hand yet one contain one hundred acors the other fifty if they have come to hand I wnt you to send them or fetch them when you com home I want you to write back wether they have got there or not I would be glad to know how you are a giting on [with on ?] your national affairs we dont git no news much from you the matters has been high the mail couldnt pass so wright to me how you are agiting on and what the union will turn two if it can be settle with out a fight and we hav got a new post office establish hear and I am post master the name the office is Hitch cock so when you write direct your letter this post office so I will come to a close by subscribing my name & remaing your truly J.J.
