Tom Massie is interviewed by Helen Miller on June 9, 2016, as part of Mountain People, Mountain Lives: A Student Led Oral History Project. Massie, a former Jackson County Commissioner, discusses his childhood memories of Haywood County and his college experiences at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and The University of Georgia. His 32-year involvement in Jackson County politics, starting with the Southwestern Planning Commission, the Center for Improving Mountain Living and continuing with the Soil and Water Board, and time as County Commissioner, are examined. Massie discusses a variety of accomplishments and projects including the renovation of the courthouse and addition of the library, utilizing the Clean Water Management Trust Fund for repairs and new sewer lines, Pinnacle Park, and conservation easements, steep slope regulations, issues with Duke Energy for FERC relicense, and time as a Western Field Representative.
