Nona Pourlos discusses her ancestors, including Levi and Hardy Caldwell, who were among the first settlers in Cataloochee Valley, which later became part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She talks about Levi’s relationship with the Cherokee and helping them hide to avoid the forced removal on the Trail of Tears. She recalls attending family reunions with her grandparents in Cataloochee Valley during the summer, when she would also spend time at their dairy farm in Haywood County.
