  • Kephart's diary is not available. However, his ''Index to Diary'' provides some illumination on his trip into western North Carolina in 1904. Among the entries on this page are the ones numbered 1 - 35, which relate to his arrival in the region and the three months spent on Dicks Creek, near Dillsboro, North Carolina. Among the headings are: ''`New Freedom,''' ''Dillsboro. Could have outfitted here,'' ''Hunting a camp-site,'' ''Dick Creek,'' ''Turpins,'' ''Rage for photos,'' ''Black Rock trip,'' ''Trout fishing at the Falls,'' ''Stella Turpin peddling buttermilk,'' ''Indian Association,'' and an entry on no. 35, ''Addio!,'' which corresponds to the photograph of his departure from Dicks Creek. Item no. 5 notes that it ''Rained every day but one in the first two weeks'' of his stay on Dicks Creek. Items from no. 36 to the end relate to Kephart's move to the Hazel Creek area of Swain County, North Carolina. Headings include: ''Off for Medlin,'' ''the mail-rider,'' ''The Everett mine,'' ''The man whose eyes shine,'' ''Josh Calhoun & the burnt shoe,'' and ''Recovered strength.''
