Horace Kephart to Norman Harsell, March 13, 1922

  • wcu_kephart-1915.jpg
  • In a letter to Norman Harsell on March 13, 1922, Horace Kephart lets him know that he read his sworn statement of what occurred at the preliminary hearing in Bakersville and will not say a word about it for fear of tipping off the guilty parties. Kephart says he heard there were twelve murders in five months in Madison County and that he has 40 acquaintances who have either killed someone or have been killed in the past 12 years, but none of the victims were visitors. Kephart says he will be at the April court session in Bakersville and that he hears the judge is not good. He ends by saying that Babe Burnett was re-tried and came clear for killing prohibition agent Hol Rose.
