  • wcu_canton-2517.jpg
  • This 1971 article relates the events of the annual Old Timers meeting at Camp Hope. Reuben B. Robertson gives a speech appealing to his fellow old timers to actively participate in creating a better world.
  • 12A-^The Waynesville (N. C) Mountaineer. Friday, July 16, 1971 REUBEN B. ROBERTSON, at left, is greeted by Jack Felmet at Camp Hope yesterday afternoon as 430 old timers met for their annual get together at Oamip Hope. Robertson, in his annual speech, called for old timers to become involved in answering the world's problems. (Mountaineer Photo by Bur- rell) Help Solve World's Problems, Robertson Advises Oldtimers By DORIS BURRELL At 92, Reuben B. Robertson, was perhaps the oldest of the 430 ,01d Timers meeting at Camp Hope yesterday evening for fun, recreation, renewing old acquaintances and a meal prepared by scores of women and young girls. Clear skies and a gentle breeze brought out the expected number of Old Timers who joined in playing Bingo, shuffle board and drinking gallons of coffee and lemon aid. Robertson, in his annual speech to the Old Timers, called for involvement and participation by the group in solving some of the problems facing the world today. "Some of this group have lived through two wars and through an undeclared war in Vietnam. Some have sons and grandsons fighting. We have never experienced such all inclusive anxieties as the world faces today," he said. In whatever direction we turn, we find hatreds, discord and disregard for the rights of others." "We cannot escape the impact of these social forces. As old timers, because we are" old timers, we have been observers of, and participants in, what has been going on longer than have most of our fellow citizens." Robertson continued by saying, "We feel like small frogs in the pond. Yet we can do something, multiplied by our numbers, we can help to create a favorable influence in the aggregate. Robertson then presented two directions in which old timers could take in creating a good influence. He said, "Great economic strength is one of the foundations stones on which our ability to resist aggresioiTmust rest" and "We must avoid waste and safe guard our resources. We must be thrifty. But our thrift must be subject to the rules of reason". He continued by stating that enthusiasm and determination are vital qualifications whenever one must meet a crisis. Robertson concluded his remarks with a poem by Robert Louis Stephenson: "Give us courage and gaiety, and the quiet mind. Spare to us our friends, soften to us our enemies, Bless us, if it may be, in all our endeavors, if it may not, give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temperate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving one another. Winners receiving prizes were: T. A. Hargrove who won a 19 inch Television set. Receiving a 30 cup automatic coffee maker were Joe S. Thompson, by guessing the number of ounces in a box of wood chips. The correct answer was 671 ounces. V. C. Deaver, retired, and J. C. Capps tied by guessing the closest to the question, "How many total years of active service are there of all old timers still living both active and retired. The correct answer is 47,861. Carlton Peyton guessed how many feet of cutter tape was in a box coiled up. The correct answer was 438 feet.
