  • FROM OUR PRESIDENT To each land every member I send greetings. Those of you who have kept in close touch with the Club know that the past year has been a busy one. Although we have had little or no money in the treasury, due to our funds being tied up by bank failures, our section of the Appalachian Trail clearing program was carried through as scheduled. This was made possible by the bull-dog tenacity and unquenchable enthusiasm of a relatively small number of loyal members. It is true that several outsiders took part in this work (and we thank them most sincerely), but it was the small group of axe-swinging, trail-making members that fired them with the desire to have even a small part in this gigantic project. Another project that we undertook and hoped to finish last year was the erection of a Club lodge or cabin in the Greenbrier section. Very little was accomplished in this work, however, largely because of reasons stated above—finances. Just now it is very evident that the social and recreational trend is toward the simple and inexpensive pursuits, and we anticipate no great difficulty in completing this as our main objective this year. By having a place of this nature, we will have provided a simple and inexpensive recreational retreat for our members. It is noted with a great deal of satisfaction that some who previously dropped out are returning to the fold. To you, we extend a hearty welcome back home, and we trust that you will begin where you left off. If you feel, however, that having been off the trail for some time you are hardly equal to the more strenuous trips you made in the past, but still want to enjoy the companionship of fellow members on the trail, let me call your attention to the schedule in the following pages of this Handbook. There is perhaps a greater number of short hikes on the 7
