PHOTOGRAPHIC CONTEST For four of the best photographs, taken by amateur photographers within the Club membership, from November 1, 1932 to November 1, 1933, awards of distinction will be made by the Directors of the Club. As an added incentive to hiking, as a stimulus to the aesthetic appreciation of Nature and to foster a habit of more critical observation, the Directors feel that this new project is a worthwhile addition to our program. Pictures submitted must have been taken by Club members who are not, in any sense, professional photographers. They must have been taken in East Tennessee or Western North Carolina. The subject matter must relate to those subjects of primary interest to the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. Not more than two awards will be made for any single type of subject matter. Not more than two awards will be made for pictures submitted by any one person. A committee of three judges will be appointed in October by the President to select the best photographs. The winning pictures will be published in the 1934 Handbook and due credit given the photographers. All matters of interpretations of rules and amendments to the rules will be made by the Board of Directors. 66

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1933 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
