  • GENERAL INFORMATION Membership in the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club is open to any reputable white person. Those desiring membership should communicate with the Secretary, Box 454, Knoxville, Tennessee. The annual dues are three dollars. All members are urged to bring visitors on the hikes, and to encourage others to belong to the club. Hikes are taken without regard to the weather. Two leaders are in charge of each hike, and the hikes of each month are under the supervision of an officer of the club. The leaders' telephone numbers are listed at the end of each hike. It is especially urged that any party starting on a club hike and not wishing to stop at the Dixie System for additional passengers, notify the leaders that they are going and how many there are in their group. CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT The following suggestions are offered to those who are hiking for the first time. The most important item of the personal equipment is good shoes. They should be well broken in, large enough for wearing two pairs of socks, and well oiled. Many like them hobnailed. Wear thick woolen socks and carry an extra pair. Woolen underwear is also important, as it absorbs perspiration and prevents chill. Riding breeches are advised of khaki or close-woven material for both men and women. Always carry an extra sweater or jacket to wear when not hiking. In winter wear warm gloves and a cap. Carry in your pack a canteen, a flashlight or candle-lantern, and your handbook for its map. Other suggested articles to take are: first-aid kit, binoculars, camera, mess-kit, axe, can-opener, compass, knife, heavy cord. 64
