  • Then, we are to have a dandy hike on the following day. We shall teave the hotel at 8:30 Sunday morning and drive to Fightm' Creek Gap, on the Elk- mont-Catlinburg highway. From there the Park Service has built a wonderful trail up the Manon Lead to Uove Mountain, thence eastward over Mt. Harrison and down Holy Ridge to Gatlinburg, a distance of 8 miles. Most ot this trail follows the Park boundary. Philip Hough, chief ranger for the Tennessee side of the National Park (and one of our members) says that the finest panoramic view of the Smokies is from a point on this trail about a mile west of Mt. Harrison. One can see White Rock, Guyot, Chapman, LeConte, New Found Gap, Mingus, Collins, Clingman's', Siler's, Thunderhead and Blanket Mountains. The view of LeConte is a knockout. Those who do not desire an 8-mile trip may leave the hotel later in the day (even after lunch) and hike up the same trail to Uncle Tom's Cabin, returning by the same route. This presents a view of LeConte that is almost as fine as that from near Mt. Harrison. Either trip gives you a magnificent view of the Smokies—that great elevation of LeConte above its base, a mile and 21 feet! There is no other place east of the Rockies (and very few in the Rockies) with so great a rise ol elevation in a 5-mile radius. Leave Dixie System at 5 P. M., drive to Gatlinburg. Hiking distance 8 miles; easy trail. Elevation 5000 feet. Take canteen and food for one meal. Cost of transportation about $2.10. Special rates for banquet and lodging. Leaders: CHARLOTTE K. FLOYD (2-8520) JNO. M. ALLEN, JR. (3-7621)
