  • October 30th MADRON'S BALD, FROM COSBY Do you like to explore? If you really do, you should make the trip to Madron's Bald. As a rule, the hike leaders are required to familiarize themselves with the trail before date of the hike, but in this case we were requested not to scout the trail. Insofar as we know, no member of the Hiking Club has made this trip. Thus, it can and will be made a real exploring trip. We shall drive via Newport to Cosby, at which point we leave State Highway No. 75 and drive up Indian Camp Creek to Valentine's Nursery, which adjoins the Great Smoky Mountains National Park boundary. Upon arrival at Valentine's, we will find and endeavor to follow the trail which we understand leads from that section to Madron's Bald, about a mile north of the Tennessee-North Carolina State line. We have heard that this "Bald" affords some fine views. We shall see—that is, if we succeed in reaching our destination. At any rate, we shall expect a good hike, in entirely new territory. The Hikes Committee believes that the very uncertainty of it will stimulate the imagination and will have a stronger appeal than if all.the details were given in advance. Leave Dixie System at 7 A. M. Take candle-lantern, canteen and food for one meal. Elevation 5300 feet. Round trip hiking distance about 8 or 10 miles. Cost of transportation about $3.50. Leaders: HUGH C. WEBB (3-7839) M. C.
