  • UTUMMJ October 1st - 2nd ANNUAL BANQUET AND ELECTION OF OFFICERS AT MONTVALE AND HIKE TO LOOK ROCK "There is romething in October sets the Gypsy blood astir; We must rise and follow her. When from every hill of flame She calls and calls each vagabond by name." We shall meet at 6 o'clock for the annual banquet at historic Montvale Springs, where we shall have the clecUon of officers, make plans for the coming year, and join in a square dance after the dinner. Montvale Springs, famous in our grandmother's day as well as now. is said to have been named by Sam Houston when he lived with the Cherokees. One ol our best-loved Southern poets, Sidney Lanier, spent some time at The Springs, and while there wrote "Tiger Lilies." The next morning at 9 A. M. the hikers will start on a 3-mile climb to Look Rock on the top of the mountain called Chilhowee, meaning "Five-KillDcer," so named by the Cherokee Indians. These mountains were also called "Enemies' Mountains." There is a gradual easy climb as far as Sweet William Spring about half way up. After passing the Spring, the ascent is more rugged, but not steep. When we arrive at the top, a wonderful view of Happy Valley breaks upon our vision, and mountain peak after mountain peak can be seen in every direc- 53
