  • August 7th WHITE ROCK VIA COSBY This year the trip to White Rock is by a different route from that formerly taken which usually started from Hartford, Tenn. Drive to Newport then take Tennessee Highway 75 thru Cosby to the State line where the cars will be parked. The National Park Service trail follows the State line to the peak. There is an unexcelled view from White Rock with Guyot, Greenbrier Pinnacle and LeConte, in the Park area; English Mountain; the Pigeon River Valley and Max Patch and other peaks in the Unaka National Forest easily distinguishable. Before leaving we bid au revoir to those sturdy (who said dirty?) hikers who are taking a vacation by hiking from White Rock along the Appalachian Trail to Indian Gap. They may need some assistance with their heavy packs on the upward journey so some of those on the regular hike may be drafted into service. However, don't let this hold you back for we have only about two miles of easy trail to cover with them while they have about a week of the roughest, toughest trail a hiker ever encounters. Leave Dixie System 7 A. M. Trail—clear with gradual slope. Elevation 5025. Take food for one meal and canteen. Round trip hiking distance 4.14 miles. The view from the top of Gregory in clear weathet is splendid. On one side is Cade's Cove; on the other, range upon range of North Carolina mountains.
