  • July 4th RUSSELL FIELD FROM CADE'S COVE VIA SUGAR COVE To many of us the mere mention of Cade's Cove brings a warm, tingling pleasure, and a longing for its wide and gracious beauty. The Cove is no less lovely as seen from above on the State line; from there it appears to be far away and so remote from the outside world as to be almost unreal. Russell Field is one of those splendid, open meadows up on the State line. The trail leading up to it is one of the most attractive in the Smokies, and is not at any point very steep or difficult. We shall take the road that leads to Willie Meyer's, and after passing a small store on the left, take to its end the first road to the left, which leads to Sugar Cove. Leave the cars at the fork, beyond which the trail passes a last cabin. The traii leads up finally to a small clearing from which we may look back on Cade's Cove and Rich Mountain. Then we s'-.all turn our backs on them and take an old road on the left that looks as if it would lead down the mountain again. It takes us thru a lovely wood" between splendid rhododendron thickets and comes out after a little more than a mile at Russell Field. There is so much of Russell Field that we must cross it for some distance to a high point which is on the State line. Gregory's Bald and Thunderhead lie on cither side of us, and Cade's Cove far below to the north. Leave Dixie System at 8 A. M. Bring food for one meal. The hiking distance is about 9 miles. The altitude is not more than 4900 feet. Leader.;: HELEN NORTHUP (3-7060) H. B. AJKIN 13-5784) 39
