  • March 5th - 6th SUGAR TREE GAP TO SILER'S BALD This trip is worth the time of anyone. Some members of the club have been over part of the trail but only two or three have been over all of it. After leaving Tremont we follow the railroad up Sam's creek as far as it goes, then on up the creek for perhaps three miles to where another creek comes in from the left. Up to this point we have been travelling thru cut-over territory, but here, after following the stream to the left about 100 yards, we come into big timber. The trail becomes steeper here as it winds along the stream with towering trees swaying overhead. If we watch we shall be able to see some of the little mountain boomers that are quite numerous here. They will run out on the limbs, fuss and scold at us as tho they think we are entering forbidden territory. A few hundred feet more and the trail gets steeper and steeper. We now leave the stream, as it turns abruptly to the left at a ford and continue to the right and up, up, up. It is only a short climb and we come out on the State line at Sugar Tree Gap, about 9:30 A. M. From here we follow the State line the rest of the way. It is one of the smoothest, and prettiest trails in the Smokies. The Park Service has cleared the trail—not a brush or log to step over. When we get to the old Hall's Cabin site, a very beautiful view awaits us. There is a fine spring off to the left about 100 yards on the Tennessee side, having the finest water you ever tasted. Rest awhile, then on to Buckeye Gap. As we are only about 3 miles from Siler's we can take a breather. Then on to Siler's where we spend the night, and to those who have been to Siler's—nuff sed. Next morning after a good breakfast we drop down the trail to Fish Camp Prong and the cars. Leave Dixie System at 4 A. M., drive to Townsend, take bus to Tremont, leaving Townsend at 5:30 A. M., 20
