  • FOREWORD The purpose of this booklet is to set out in full the year's program, together with such other information as might be helpful and of interest to hikers. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was organized primarily to promote interest and enjoyment of the out-of-doors for those in the vicinity of Knoxville. But now, with 7 years' growth, and especially with the es» tablishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, consisting of 427,000 acres of primitive and picturesque mountain wilderness in Tennessee and North Carolina, we should enlarge our activities and encourage those farther away to come and enjoy the Smokies with us. The hikes this year have been carefully planned, with a thought not only for the hardy, seasoned hiker, but for the "tenderfoot." Concurrently with most of the long hikes is a short, easier one. The schedule covers the entire length of the State line, or Appalachian Trail, thru the Park area. One of the new and most outstanding treks of the year is the one to Mt. Chapman, named in honor of one of our own charter members. The vacation trip is a new feature, and probably the most unique. We look forward with keen anticipation to the two trips in April with the North Carolina Clubs, the Appalachian Trail Club of Asheville, and the Horace Kep- hart Hiking Club of Bryson City. An interesting and instructive meeting will be the camping demonstration at the Scout Farm. The Banquet and Election of Officers at Montvale has become a tradition with the Club.
